in the first half we ran the ball about 9 times for 2 yard... passed it like 18 times, with 2 of those coming in the 2 min drill.

In the 2nd half we received the ball down 31-7 with about 9 min left in the 3rd quarter.

Clearly it was time to run the ball more at that point. With our .002 yards per carry down by 24 pts.

We could have come back in quarter 87.

McVay such an idiot.

I get what you're saying, particularly after we were behind 31-7.

But prior to that, McVay's run calls were pretty much all up the middle, no variety in the types of runs. And that contributed to the piss poor yards per carry, because the Cowboys D didn't have to have to respect the outside runs/jet sweeps/off tackle runs that were so effective for us last week and helped open up some of the inside runs.

I'm not going to throw McVay under the bus or call for his head, he's still a very smart coach. But he's had some absolute stinkers this year in terms of gameplans and in-game playcalling. Here's hoping his failures this season are a springboard for learning and getting better going forward.

BTW, our least effective WR is our highest paid WR and our 3rd highest paid player.

Think about that.

It has to change.

I am not convinced he's over the effects of his two concussions this year. He is clearly not the same player he was before them. At best, he's playing very timidly in fear of another one, which limits his effectiveness. And with the number of concussions, I really think for his health the best thing would be to hang up the cleats.

Valid topic, but let's not turn this into a vent thread, please.

We all know the rules.

Yeah but this thread was about run to pass ratio - not types of runs. What types of runs could or would have worked is another matter. But that also depends on scheme, ect.

It's really a simple formula.

When a team is ahead they will run more....
When a team is ahead by a lot they will run almost exclusively....

When a team is behind they tend to passs more....
When a team is waaay behind they will pass almost exclusively.

I said the same thing to myself during the game.

Because they are a finesse team. Its like a basketball team that lives and dies with the 3 pointer. No inside power game. So when they are off or defended on the perimeter they get blown out.

Dallas did a great job in coverage... Seemed like most passes were contested and not a lot of separation. All while dominating the line of scrimmage.

For those who thought the OL was progressing, we saw today that it's still the major problem it has been all year.
Unfortunately, this is the truth.

We are not a playoff team this year.
We won't have losing record, which is a small plus, but we need to get thos o line straightened out this offseason.
We cannot go into next season with question marks on this unit.
We need to add no less than 1, solid, veteran starter to play along these young guys.
If we cant talk Big Wit into staying, then make that 2 vets.

Was visiting family and at the game. Total embarrassment. Couldn't run or stop the run. No blocking so they couldn't run more if they wanted to. Goff was terrible with or without the hand injury. Higbee was open more than they threw to him.
Great stadium and atmosphere but horrible performance.

Did we watch the same game? Some of you asking to run more when the OL was getting blown up all day at the LOS.
We came out throwing on our 1st drive. It looked like the run wasnt even in the game plan.
By the 2nd half, it was too late to start.
Not that it would have mattered today. We were manhandled at the LOS.

Fisher's team? I can remember two games in his tenure that ended in a beatdown like this. We've had several THIS YEAR.
I dunno about that. I can remember two just off the top of my head. Niners opening night a few years ago and the falcons game that got him fired. There was also a Patriots game and a saints game that got ugly.

IMO he is sort of blind as a playcaller.

Sometimes just plain stupid.

I find it amusing that you are calling McVay a "blind" play caller.
It seems to me that you are the one "blindly" looking at run/pass ratios.

They guy watching the running back get negative or zero yards each run is blind?

But the guy just looking at run/pass ratios regardless of context is "is seeing clearly?"

It's nothing personal bro - but c'mon.

It's important to look at the secondary (in the general, not football sense) issues of how that ratio became so lopsided. And I think at minimum, the fact that there was no variety in our run game early on - just up the middle, time and time again - contributed to its abandonment at a point in the game where it was still a one score game. In other words, it's not enough to just look at the pass/run ratio and the score at any given time, you also have to look at how you tried to implement the running game and if there was something else that could have been done that would have made it more successful. And I think the answer in today's game - as opposed to the game last week against the Seahawks - is a resounding 'no'.

The lack of variety in the run game today was a direct contributor to its failure to get going and eventual abandonment when the score got out of hand. A couple of good jet sweeps could have really changed the dynamic and put the defense in the posture of having to guess and risk guessing wrong. Instead, McVay's run calls today made it easy for them, and that's something he needs to learn from and improve.
