Hey @OldSchool wasn't it you and me who were discussing the possible signing of Gurley? Not going to mention who was right of course because that would not be classy.
I didn't think they'd resign him? Don't recall that, I've said they likely won't resign Joyner, Saffold, Brockers and Barron to make room :) But If I said they wouldn't resign Gurley then props to you.

So if my calc is correct thats $74m ($4.3m 2018, $9.6m 2019, $60m 2020-2023) for 6 years. Averages out to $12.3m/year with an opt out for the Rams on the last year of his extension.

Here’s another way of looking at it:

Gurley’s Rookie deal: 4 years at just under 14 M.

Fifth year option: 2019 season at 9.6 M.

New Extension: 4 years (2020-2023) at 60M.

All told, that’s 14 M + 9.6M + 60 M = 83.6M. Over 9 years.

Average salary: 83.6 M divided by 9 is 9.28M per year.

CONCLUSION: MVP candidate at 9 years for 9.28 M per year is a good deal!

Let's say you didn't and move on.

I don't know that I completely agree with the sentiment "relies so much on quickness"

His quickness certainly helps him and a lot of it is how much he studies and works with hand eye coordination.

But Donald is also a monster of strength and conditioning.
And leverage, understand leverage.
But it all starts with quickness.

This is going a long way into building up my faith in the Ram's organization as a whole. Now I have no doubt that the Rams are going to be good for years to come. This has been a long time coming. I have never been as confident in the foundation of the Rams and their future as I am now. My Ram brethren, we kept the faith and the future is NOW!

So cool to see this. TG3 locked up for many years. New Rams record holder at the position?

Gotta understand priority. Who is more important to team success? Clearly TG because he touches the ball and AD doesn't. Rams have their priorities in order IMHO. They'll get AD done in time for the season, if not , Oh well, he's still under contract.

I don't think so. The defensive players are asking for too much money and our Offensive players seem to have a different mindset when it comes $$$ and contracts. Lets be honest paying AD like a QB just isn't smart money.

How do we know what the players are asking for and that it is out of line? We have generic reports, but lets be clear AD is the best defensive player in the NFL and isn't getting paid anywhere like it, Gurley is a top RB in the NFL (maybe the best) and just got record money. There is no sign that Peters, AD, or Joyner are asking for more or less relative to their value compared to what Gurley just got (a year early in fact).

To be clear the Gurley contract is NOT cheap, it is not some home town discount, it is a top end contract so I do not see some mindset difference in what players are asking for.

I would also like to point out how horribly wrong I was about Gurley getting paid. I really thought he was headed for a contract showdown in two years.

Yeah, I thought it was likely he would be odd man out, especially with his rhetoric in support of Bell. I'm glad that while he gets a huge contract, it's more reasonable than I expected. I suspect the cap hit is structured so that he could be cut for little damage the last season, if circumstances required.

This feels like a good move for both sides.

Gurley gets a top end contract and the security that goes along with it.

It also gives the Rams a little more clarity for planning other deals. That feels significant.

I was worried Gurley might have been the odd man out... particularly with some of his strong contract talk around guarantees. I figured that could lead to trouble.

I see what you're saying but with all due respect all of the reports are saying that it's either Mack or AD that's going to be the highest paid defensive player in the league. One is just waiting for the other domino to fall. So yes I think we do get the sense of how much they are going to be asking for at their respected positions. Problem is do you make a DT the highest paid defensive player in the NFL? I think it's a bad move, of course that's my opinion but it seems like the Rams front office might have the same train of thought on that. Maybe they don't want to pay him over a 100mil. Who knows, time will tell, all I can say is the Rams are willing to pay money but pay where it's going to benefit your team the most. And RB and WR benefit the team more than a DT does. Even the best DT.
