I see what you're saying but with all due respect all of the reports are saying that it's either Mack or AD that's going to be the highest paid defensive player in the league. One is just waiting for the other domino to fall. So yes I think we do get the sense of how much they are going to be asking for at their respected positions. Problem is do you make a DT the highest paid defensive player in the NFL? I think it's a bad move, of course that's my opinion but it seems like the Rams front office might have the same train of thought on that. Maybe they don't want to pay him over a 100mil. Who knows, time will tell, all I can say is the Rams are willing to pay money but pay where it's going to benefit your team the most. And RB and WR benefit the team more than a DT does. Even the best DT.

Question dudes: is it really necessary to turn this into yet another AD thread? Can't we just be happy for Todd?

This is why we can't have nice things. :p

I like the timing of the Gurley extension. A day before TC to boost interest in the team. With the success the Rams had last season and all the off season moves getting good players I bet TC is going to have a lot more people this year.

Again, what alternate universe are we living in? Rams this, Rams that, Rams crushing it in nearly everyway possible! What the hell happened to this franchise? Who made a deal with the Devil?

Never bad for the players to come in and see their hard working, humble, team captain get rewarded well above past market value for his contributions to the team. Might put an extra step in a few young guys walk.

Love the signing!!

By doing the extension now Gurley gets guaranteed money that many RB's will never see especially with RB's having a higher risk of injury and a shorter shelf like. What the Rams get is a stability of having a potential HOF RB for his prime years and at moderate discount if you consider the potential / inevitable contract inflation that is coming. The biggest risk to the Rams is obviously catastrophic injury but every long term contract has that risk for any team.

I think this also actually helps the Rams with signing Donald. With both Cooks and Gurley extended Donald is guaranteed to have to play under the franchise tag for 2019 & 2020 if he does not take the Rams best offer. Before the Cooks and Gurley extensions the Rams were potentially facing possible choices on who to franchise for each of the next two years thus giving Donald more leverage if the situation were to drag out. It also proves to Donald the Rams are wiling to pay fair market value now and keep it's core talent together.

Can’t be overstated that this extension begins in 2020, not 2018.

As a FA in 2020, there’s no doubt in my mind that Gurley would have gotten more than 4 y/ 60 M.
It's a good deal for Gurley also. If he gets hurt in next 2 years he might never see that kind of money. Rams are putting a lot on the line.

Have we seen the official structure of the deal?

We have a little speculation going on.

Here’s another way of looking at it:

Gurley’s Rookie deal: 4 years at just under 14 M.

Fifth year option: 2019 season at 9.6 M.

New Extension: 4 years (2020-2023) at 60M.

All told, that’s 14 M + 9.6M + 60 M = 83.6M. Over 9 years.

Average salary: 83.6 M divided by 9 is 9.28M per year.

CONCLUSION: MVP candidate at 9 years for 9.28 M per year is a good deal!
Even better!!!! And we get a “WE not ME” guy. I hope LA rains endorsements all over Gurley Man.

How do we know what the players are asking for and that it is out of line? We have generic reports, but lets be clear AD is the best defensive player in the NFL and isn't getting paid anywhere like it, Gurley is a top RB in the NFL (maybe the best) and just got record money. There is no sign that Peters, AD, or Joyner are asking for more or less relative to their value compared to what Gurley just got (a year early in fact).

To be clear the Gurley contract is NOT cheap, it is not some home town discount, it is a top end contract so I do not see some mindset difference in what players are asking for.
What players are asking for in 2 years will be a lot more. My guess that by then it will be a deal. Assuming he is healthy. Gurley knows what can happen. He has lived it that's probably why he didn't want to wait to try to get more.

this guy isn't like other dts. he's so much better, he rushes like a de from the middle which screws qbs so much more. he will be the highest paid defensive player and the rams will pay him.

.

This is a good deal for both sides. Gurley extends with two years left on his unchanged (cheap) rookie contract. He gets $15m/yr after that, but the biggest win for him is the $45m guarantee. He will is fully guaranteed for the next four seasons. In exchange, team gets an extension that will probably be below TG's market value as a FA in 2020....as long as he stays healthy. He'll be a Ram until he's 30 (i.e., his whole career).
I hate to bring it up, but I’m sure that season ending knee injury at Georgia, just before the draft, is on his mind. I know it’s been in the back of my mind since we drafted him. Here’s hoping for health! cheers!
