Which is what the Rooney itself promotes. Actually, it is a requirement that a minority will be interviewed without having a legit chance at getting the job.
What bothers me most about this whole thing is the double standard. Lets say Belichick text was about Flores, and Flores then got hired.
Would he be drawing up a law suit on behalf of Leslie Frazier not getting a fair shot?
Clearly in that case the Giants would have circumvented the Rooney rule if he was their guy
Nobody thinks the Rooney Rule is great. The reason it exists is because of how discriminatory NFL hiring has traditionally been. It's basically a PR move by the NFL.

Is there a link confirming this as this is a game changer if true and I don't hear anyone discussing this in media? If they hit their "quota" already then fair game and bringing him in for a look see is no harm as anything can happen ie. Josh McDaniel in Indy.
They had interviewed 2 but the one out of organization in person interview happened after the Flores interview.

There's a difference between interviewing for a job I have doubts I'll get and interviewing for a job the employer knows they won't offer me. They're not paying for me to be there. So they're wasting my time asking me to do that. And I have no doubt that's how Flores felt.

I don't interview for a job for fun. Interviews are very, very rarely fun. They're stressful and can be quite time consuming. My time is valuable to me. Don't waste it. And especially don't expect gratitude or appreciation if you do. An employer is seriously entitled if they think they're doing me a favor interviewing me for a job they're going to definitely give to another person.
Part of my job is putting a sales force together. There are instances when I’ve pretty much made up my mind on who I’m going to hire but I still continue to interview the rest of the applicants.

Why you ask? Because I know down the line I’m going to need to continue hiring people and if someone else knocks my socks off during the interview process guess who’s getting a call from me the next time I have an opening?

Anytime you have the opportunity to make a great impression on someone and you don’t take advantage of it is short sighted in my book.

It actually promotes what it allegedly intends to stop.
Like you said, its completely disrespectful to interview someone who you have no intention of hiring. The rule of 2 makes that a certainty. And if in the event the Giants wanted to promote their DC Graham, it would have been disrespect to 2 guys.

If I could stand on my soap box for a minute, this whole thing sickens me. All this bullshit is just taking away from what the real issue is. Eric Bieniemy wasnt even a thought this year. Leftwhich, provided he doesnt get the Jax job, will go backwards as Tampa falls apart. That's the real issue. Who is helping these guys with the interview process? Who is sitting down with them and constructively working with them on their shortcomings? That's where the problem lies IMO, instead of playing the race card, why not dig a little deeper and see if these guys can be helped. You bet your ass that Kellen Moore knows what he needs to bring up in his game
Ok, rant over

At this point though all they may need is basically practice interviewing or a great resume. Flores has a good resume and was still under consideration by the Saints. It still smells of sour grapes a little. Like you said, does this lawsuit happen if he gets the Giants job? Sounds like it doesn’t.

Does the Rooney rule need changed? Yes. Is it necessary for Flores to risk his career to change it by suing? I don’t know. Don’t coaches have meetings or just owners? Couldn’t head coaches have brought a proposal to the owners?

I'll be "shortsighted." If I'm interviewing for a job, it's because I want it today. There's no guarantee it's going to be in my plans a year or two down the road. If it's not truly available, don't interview me. I don't consider it an "opportunity." I consider it a slap in the face. I would never ask people to interview with me if I'm not going to consider them for the job opening. I consider it a waste of their time and mine.

Well, no they aren’t. That’s the point. Unless you are saying that deciding who the coach is and then interviewing 2 black guys to check the box is compliant. And if that is compliance, then the process is the issue.
If they knew who they wanted before the interviews, the compliance is just that. They are jumping through hoops needlessly other than having to be compliant. That’s a great waste of everybody’s time. It is however a great toolto sharpen interview skills for the minority applicants. It is this system’s only use. These owners/GMs are going to hire who they think is best for their organization no matter the applicant’s melanin count.

That unfortunately happens everyday. You never really know if you are even going to be considered for a position before the interview. About 75% of higher level jobs are predetermined before the interview process. It’s more formality and confirmation than anything else. Such is life.

What’s the point of developing interview skills, then?

And if I was to find out that was the case, I'd have some choice words for them.

It usually is the case. Just how it works at the top. It’s not always the way it should play out but the buddy buddy system will always be in play.

Because one day it might give them the edge. Otherwise, you lose a close one.
Just in case a team someday goes into the hiring process with an open mind?

The buddy buddy system doesn’t need to be in play. It’s a shitty system - and I think that’s the goal of this suit - to break the wheel.

It won’t do a thing to that wheel. Too many spokes in that puppy. And I think quite a many teams go into the process with an open mind. But their mind is mostly made up before the interview happens. That’s not going to change much.

Unfortunately, you are probably right. But the arc of the moral universe bends toward Justice because we bend it that way. And while this may end up being a feeble tug, in my eyes it is a tug in that direction.

I've read several criticisms of Moore, as to why he was bypassed. He can work on those. Owners want to win, period, and they hire who they think is the best bet to get them there. The guys who can show their plan, map out their success and speak to it during interview are more apt to get the jobs. I think the race angle is the effect, not the cause

There's a lot of data that indicates the opposite. It is easier to look past mistakes and flaws in those who are like you than those who are not.

I just chuckle every time someone says “just hire the best guy for the job..” as if these guys know what they’re doing.
Most of them are hiring a guy because they fucked up last time, lol.

Kaepernick was a back up QB at that point and his flaws were well known.

To all of these: Interviewing can be a source of networking. Even if Flores wasn’t the Giants choice, and it was already decided that Daboll was the guy, the interview was a chance to impress. Impress an owner, President or GM and then they talk to others in the field and tell them Flores was very impressive and made our decision tougher, you should check him out. That’s a positive outlook on opportunity. Brian seems to have a negative outlook on it.

First Colin Kap - F’d himself. He had a contract he walked out & thought he was OWED more.

The last thing any team needs is a cancer. He plays QB. J. Russell

As much as we like to think we hire solely on merit, we tend to hire those who reflect ourselves the best. But yes, it was certainly interesting to see a guy like Dan Quinn get interest from seemingly every team, while Jim Caldwell and Brian Flores had far colder markets.

It's especially odd that Jim Caldwell has never gotten a shot since the Lions fired him after 2017. He brought them to the playoffs twice in four years, is the only Detroit HC to have an above .500 record since the early 1970s, and had winning seasons in three out of four years. What have the Lions done since he left? Lost a lot of games.
