As much as we like to think we hire solely on merit, we tend to hire those who reflect ourselves the best. But yes, it was certainly interesting to see a guy like Dan Quinn get interest from seemingly every team, while Jim Caldwell and Brian Flores had far colder markets.

It's especially odd that Jim Caldwell has never gotten a shot since the Lions fired him after 2017. He brought them to the playoffs twice in four years, is the only Detroit HC to have an above .500 record since the early 1970s, and had winning seasons in three out of four years. What have the Lions done since he left? Lost a lot of games.
Many examples.

I can look at a couple of hires this cycle and feel pretty confident Morris would’ve been a better hire.

We’ll see.

I won't complain about Morris getting another year. Means our D won't have to learn a new scheme, and it makes us eligible to get picks back if he lands a HC job.

maybe they wanted to interview quinn, get a feel for him and then sign someone who is the exact opposite of him?

And there's also plenty of guys who were candidates and never got their shot. Dave Toub is a guy that comes to mind who used to be at the top of every list, never got a HC gig. A guy like Brian Billick won a SB, had a strong record, never got another gig. With Caldwell, I dont know. The team just seemed like it wasnt going anywhere. The decision to go with Patricia was just deplorable, how that dude ever got a HC job I'll never know.

Morris still has a chance at a HC job this season.

Wasn't going anywhere? How many Lions coaches can say they have a winning record? He was great with the Colts, then he was great with the Lions.

I dont think he was a candidate at any of the other open spots, I only saw him attached to the Vikings.
Do we know what New Orleans is doing yet? It's a fairly recent option.

They interviewed Flores (on the same day he filed the suit) - but the strong suspicion is that Dennis Allen will take over. Doug Peterson and Aaron Glenn have also interviewed.

They werent getting better, they were treading water. He was handed a really good defense and they just hovered around .500

He went 11-5 in his first year, they had gone 7-9 the year before (and 4-12 the year before that)

Then he went 7-9 in his second year

Then Calvin Johnson retires

Then 9-7 and 9-7

They haven't sniffed a winning season since he left

I see what you are saying - but if you look at the trajectory of where the team was before he got there, what they did while he was there, and what they have done since he left - I'd say that a team should feel pretty good about him as a candidate based on track record.

Its one of those things that's difficult to look back on objectively because of what happened after him, and frankly before him on paper.
The first year was a paper tiger year, great defense and won a bunch of close games, but from then on the team just treaded water. Not sure if it was the last season he was there or the one before it but they had gotten off to a great start then lost like 5 of last 6. The defense which was great when he started became average and the offense despite having Stafford just didnt seem to reach its potential.
Either way, at the time it seemed like they were under achieving and a change could put them over the top, but the change made was so bad that it distorts the reality of what was happening at the time.
In any event, he did get 2 chances at the HC gig when there are guys who arent even getting a chance at their first shot. That just has to change.

What was Leftwich thinking? He just demanded himself right out of a head coaching job.
