If I had a young running QB I'd show him tape of Elway. And tell him scrambling to buy time to throw down field is how you put a fuckin dagger in a defense. Running for some shitty yards on the ground and them teeing off on your ass and taking you off the field is doing it wrong.

Exactly my thought. Elway, honestly, is possibly the greatest mobile quarterback to have played the game.

I hated Denver, always have. But that MFer would single handedly win playoff games for them doing that BS.

Mahomes in his prime reminded me of Elway. He'd do the same type of shit, just kill teams off sched.

My brother's a Denver fan (and our mutual childhood friend has been a Packers fan since he was a kid), so I have a tiny bit of a soft spot for those two teams. Doesn't make me want the Rams to beat their asses any less, but there's a bit of a tiny little soft spot in that hardened heart of mine.

And yeah, Mahomes is the closest we're going to get to Elway. His arm talent, like Stafford's arm, is rare in the NFL.

Marino never had a dominate defense. Many SB winning QBs who could not carry his jock.
Nor did he have much of a running game. Shula seemed to get caught up in having an offense that threw it 40 times a game. That often happens to teams who have great QBs. Their coaches make them unbalanced and predictable. See Stafford in Detroit. That was my fear when we traded for him. I thought McVay would abandon the run, but to his credit he was smart enough to know that the offense had to remain balanced.

The part I'm trying to figure out is, what would the purpose be for any reclamation project? Would it be to backup Stafford or be the starter when he's done?

If we're talking about a backup, sure, why not.
Backup for possible development as future QB competition to start.

Certainly, he should sometimes scramble to throw, but if I have a kid who's a weapon, I'm not going to keep that horse in the stable.
