If I had a young running QB I'd show him tape of Elway. And tell him scrambling to buy time to throw down field is how you put a fuckin dagger in a defense. Running for some shitty yards on the ground and them teeing off on your ass and taking you off the field is doing it wrong.

Exactly my thought. Elway, honestly, is possibly the greatest mobile quarterback to have played the game.

I hated Denver, always have. But that MFer would single handedly win playoff games for them doing that BS.

Mahomes in his prime reminded me of Elway. He'd do the same type of shit, just kill teams off sched.

My brother's a Denver fan (and our mutual childhood friend has been a Packers fan since he was a kid), so I have a tiny bit of a soft spot for those two teams. Doesn't make me want the Rams to beat their asses any less, but there's a bit of a tiny little soft spot in that hardened heart of mine.

And yeah, Mahomes is the closest we're going to get to Elway. His arm talent, like Stafford's arm, is rare in the NFL.

Marino never had a dominate defense. Many SB winning QBs who could not carry his jock.
Nor did he have much of a running game. Shula seemed to get caught up in having an offense that threw it 40 times a game. That often happens to teams who have great QBs. Their coaches make them unbalanced and predictable. See Stafford in Detroit. That was my fear when we traded for him. I thought McVay would abandon the run, but to his credit he was smart enough to know that the offense had to remain balanced.

The part I'm trying to figure out is, what would the purpose be for any reclamation project? Would it be to backup Stafford or be the starter when he's done?

If we're talking about a backup, sure, why not.
Backup for possible development as future QB competition to start.

Certainly, he should sometimes scramble to throw, but if I have a kid who's a weapon, I'm not going to keep that horse in the stable.

JFI, unless Stafford retires I don't expect Jimmy Garoppolo coming back to the Rams. The Vikings will come hard after him to replace McCarthy in Minnesota. Already knows the offense and is a huge upgrade over McCarthy. In fact, I would not be shocked if McCarthy is traded.

Also FWIW, I was wrong on McCarthy, really thought he would be a good NFL QB, obviously that is not the case. I don't see the Vikings making a move on any other QB that is available, so Garoppolo makes perfect sense in Minnesota next year.

I wonder if Harbaugh would take McCarthy off their hands for a mid round pick? Wherever he plays next year will have to determine whether or not to exercise the 5th year of the contract

Chargers perfect place for him, setting up Justin Herbert to the Rams down the road. Seriously though, that would be a good spot for him, good call.

Elway and… (if one can put their hate in a box) Steve Young.

Young was a dangerous runner, and more importantly throw with precision short med and deep.
That long TD scramble Young had with nearly the entire defense missing tackles of him...

Dude finished his reg season career with over 4,000 yds rushing and 43 TD’s

I would imagine a lot of folks would be surprised at those figures when discussing best dual threat guys. Not Rams fans of course. He killed us for years.

Elway had to be just about the most gifted QB ever to play the game. Not only could that guy run and scramble, he could throw the ball 90 yards in the air. I seen guys like Howie Long pile drive that guy, and you really could pile drive them in those days. Then get up, grass stains all over his back, helmet on kinda sideways, and throw a TD.
My Raider fan friends used to call him Horsehead because you could beat on him and he would just shake it off and take the life out of their defense. Tough as nails.
He really did put his team on his back and take them to the Super Bowl. If he had better people in the front office and on the sidelines he would have won more big games than he did. Finally got his SB with a stud RB he needed all the time. Almost too late.
