Just saw this and thought it was a good read on what prompted the Rams to trade Goff. It seems to confirm what most of us already know, but adds a little bit more on just how frustrated McVay got with Goff and their relationship dynamic.

Sounds like Goff doesn't handle criticism well, and can't read a defense like we assumed was part of the reason he's gone.

It does make me eat crow that maybe he wasn't putting in the time, because it seems like Goff was. And I, I was wrong about that.

I didn't get that at all.

The article says he did struggle occasionally when Goff first had to read 0 coverage, but that's about it.
Goff and McVay had differences on play calling and game plan.
We've seen this before.
Take Rogers for example. He's much happier and even improved this past year, due to the fact that he has input in what plays he likes to run.

As far as putting in the time? The article said he did.

As far as Goff not having thick skin. It did seem that Goff didn't react well to the yelling and constant criticism.
The article talked about how Lafleur and Taylor were a good buffer between Goff and McVay.
Having 5 qb coaches in 5 years didn't exactly help.

Sorry I thought this article was interesting but reeked of BS - like at the beginning when she says Mcvay was "heated" as he angrily called out the qb in post game for "making better decisions" Yeah I saw those press conferences and yeah coach was not happy but the characterization of those comments was.... lol. Mcvay screaming and cussing at Goff on the sidelines? I mean does McVay cuss... yeah.

But we see their sideline interactions often.. and mcvay often looks baffled, but the characterization of the interactions this person is writing does not match up with anything I saw.

Then it would say in one moment how the team thought Goff got a pass too often for things going wrong -but then in another paragraph said that mcvay was too hard on Goff

Sorry thought it was an entertaining read - but was about 75% BS.

Sounds like Detroit is buying in to a longer tenure than we originally thought. Sure the expected cap increases will offset that, but still 5 mill per year of dead money would be a tough pill to swallow.
Only surprise is that they didnt make this space earlier and try to keep Holladay.

Agreed.
And I dont agree with the timeline either. Yes, we all saw McVay call Goff out after San Fran loss (2). What the article leaves out is how Goff played following that. He was great against Tampa and Seattle prior to that 49er game, so when he played awesome against Arizona and then in the 1st half against New England, it sure seemed like the train was on the right track.
The Jets game was just a team let down. Frankly, Goff played good enough for the team to win, but gets blamed for the loss. And after Seattle loss? Folks can listen to the post game themselves, McVay didnt blame Jared, he actually commended his play.
I dont want any other coach than McVay, he's the best ram coach of my lifetime. But I cant be convinced otherwise that McVay didnt turn on a dime with his exuberance of Wolford's play. And we've seen this before with CJ Anderson.
No way we'll ever know, but IMO if Goff plays the season ender vs Arizona, he's still the QB today

Did my point assume that Goff is as good as Warner was? Nope, it didn't. So let's drop the bad faith. It's quite alike. Martz and his attack dogs in the media (Boinie, especially) smeared Kurt when Martz was trying to push him out and after he succeeded in getting rid of him. We saw the same thing happen with Jared. Suddenly, a guy who played his heart out for this franchise was lazy, unmotivated, and apathetic.

Funny how common it is for NFL franchises to leak that sort of stuff. I remember the Jaguars attacking Jalen Ramsey's character in the same sort of way after they traded him. When you push a guy out, I guess you have to burn that bridge to ensure the fans dislike the player and not the team. Gotta hand it to them, they succeeded in getting a solid number of people to take the bait.

If Stafford had not come available, the only thing that the ‘leak’ ends up being is a challenge for Goff, by letting him know that he’s competing with Wolford instead of it being a given that he starts. When McVay started noting some disappointment in Jarred it was before news of Stafford coming available. Plus there was no guarantee they’d land anyone better than Goff or Wolford.

I'm talking about the leaks after the trade where Rams sources implied that Goff didn't work hard and was unmotivated after he got paid.

The article makes clear from sources that the locker room wasn't in complete agreement over Goff and it was blatantly obvious watching the sideline when Wolford played against Cardinals that the team was injected with some life because of it. Seeing the sideline while Wolford made plays compared to the previous half season was the first time I thought Goff could very well be done here. That's not surprising when you have a #1 defense with some very passionate players and an offense under performing. I wish things could have been different but I'm excited for Stafford.

The sideline stuff is only seeing what one wants to see. I can tell you that on any/every other team, when the unknown backup qb gets to play, the team will always be in support. The idea that it was a sign of favoritism is just embellishment.

It doesn’t say that stuff tho...it basically describes a single heated exchange mixed in with the author’s interpretations

if anything it seems full of bias to me

For example, when describing how good Goff was during that 2 year span why do they call him “the lanky QB” kinda weird and not very objective IMO

You think the sideline would have been same if Rams were losing that game? He led them to 9 points and the D did the rest. Sorry, but if you cant tell the difference between a sideline happy for the kid and sideline supporting a player I dont know what to say.
Bottom line, McVay wanted Stafford, and he got him. That's all we need to know. Why that isnt enough for folks is just beyond me.

McVay is a great coach, but he clearly made a mistake when he let LaFleur and Olson walk after 2017 without truly replacing them. Sounds like things wouldn't have been as problematic as they became if we had maintained the buffer between Goff and McVay.

And again, there's where McVay is too much like his mentor, Gruden. It's not so much a "limitation" when it comes to reading defenses as it is inexperience. The more you see, the less you are surprised. Pocket passers don't have the ability to scramble their way out of being fooled. That's why it takes longer for them to develop. People remember pocket passers for the players they became when they hit their primes. They don't remember the volatile early years. McVay is getting his veteran QB, but at a high cost.
