Could easily say he sleptwalked through this game:

But I don't think most QBs have bad games because they didn't care or didn't put in the work. Goff got his ass handed to him in some of his bad games last year. I never doubted the guy's desire to be out there. If he didn't want to be there, he could have taken himself out of the game at any time with an "injury."

I was at that fucking game....it was the only game I ever saw him play live.
Only game I saw live was his last start in horns. 5 fumbles and a pick. Team was awful for 3 quarters, then the old KW appeared in the 4th. Unfortunately, they didnt close the deal, lost and Kurt rode pine the rest of the year

I never hated Jared. I respected the toughness it took at Cal for him to gut it out, getting smashed that first year in College. He steadily improved there. After Fisher's last year, he did well with McVay in 2017 and 2018. BUT, when the misdirection started failing, he looked like a lost duck, often. My gut would clench when he was running and didn't see the defender closing like a heat seeking missile, but it seemed that he was going to fumble when hit that way. The lack of a decent center in 2019 and 2020 didn't help him at all and I think he WANTED to do better, but didn't know how, for whatever reason. As thin and spindly as he looked, he was very durable for us. But, he lacked confidence of earlier years, imo, and he wasn't that good throwing off his back foot. I like Stafford because he can make those throws where he doesn't have time for perfect form in doing it. Stafford will throw INTS, but he can be incredibly precise in more situations than Jared, imo.

We are a better team in my opinion with Stafford than with Jared, but I would have been ok to have stuck with him of the trade didn't happen. He's a decent QB, who is someone rare in Rams history...

Eerily similar to Mike Martz trashing Kurt Warner on his way out. Maybe the defense simply got one over on a young QB.

I really don't get the eagerness to kick Goff, or Warner, or any great Rams' players or coaches on the way out the door. Being a sports fan should be about positivity and having fun, not opportunities to gleefully trash your team's former stars.

Without directing this at any poster, I also believe much board speculation about what happened to the Rams last year is little more than circular group think based upon unproven, dubious or wrong assumptions.

In addition to Warner, Vermeil imo is another example of a Rams great treated badly. Vermeil was basically pushed out the door after winning the Super Bowl, in part by St Louis sports writers, so that we could keep the then anointed genius Martz as coach. Martz was said to be the real architect of the championship and the wave of the future in offensive football. Vermeil was said to be too old.

In fact Martz, though a very innovative play designer, went on to ultimately help wreck the franchise, including by getting rid of Warner.

Vermeil on the other hand was an all time great coach who took UCLA to a stunning win over no. 1 Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, built the downtrodden Eagles into a Super Bowl team, and then built the GSOT Rams into Super Bowl champions. He is the only guy ever named coach of the year on every level from HS to the NFL. Had he continued with the Rams imo we would have won at least another Super Bowl.

That is an absurd statement.

Goff did need McVays help. From how it looked, even this season Goff still struggled to read defenses after they shifted.

McVay had to trim down the offense to help Goff be successful.

Stafford is an 11 year veteran. Nobody is going to give McVay credit for Stafford’s ability. Maybe he will get some credit for molding his game plan to Stafford’s strengths, but Stafford could go anywhere and still be a very good QB. I’m not so sure Goff can reach his peak performances under McVay ever again.

that was then, this is now.

and your post just proved my point. thanks.

Goff = Warner:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::p:p:p

Seriously this is not very much alike at all.

Did my point assume that Goff is as good as Warner was? Nope, it didn't. So let's drop the bad faith. It's quite alike. Martz and his attack dogs in the media (Boinie, especially) smeared Kurt when Martz was trying to push him out and after he succeeded in getting rid of him. We saw the same thing happen with Jared. Suddenly, a guy who played his heart out for this franchise was lazy, unmotivated, and apathetic.

Funny how common it is for NFL franchises to leak that sort of stuff. I remember the Jaguars attacking Jalen Ramsey's character in the same sort of way after they traded him. When you push a guy out, I guess you have to burn that bridge to ensure the fans dislike the player and not the team. Gotta hand it to them, they succeeded in getting a solid number of people to take the bait.

Just saw this and thought it was a good read on what prompted the Rams to trade Goff. It seems to confirm what most of us already know, but adds a little bit more on just how frustrated McVay got with Goff and their relationship dynamic.

Last year Gurley, this year Goff.

I don’t get it either and that’s why I’ve said very little.

Unfortunately, a good post @FarNorth

PHENOMENAL article. Shows great insight and answers question's we figured we knew the answers too.

Sounds like Goff doesn't handle criticism well, and can't read a defense like we assumed was part of the reason he's gone.

It does make me eat crow that maybe he wasn't putting in the time, because it seems like Goff was. And I, I was wrong about that.
