Correct me if I'm wrong but we also had the horses on the backend at the time to close fast and hard whereas that changed a bit in the years that followed. People don't realize how many great role players that 2020 D had at slot, at edge, at so many places.
I think that's a real thing the personnel ... little things ... and NFL caught up to Fangio-based schemes.

Maybe, but Spanos is cheap. He doesn’t pay ‘top coach’ type of money to head coaches or their staff. He was paying Staley 4-5 million, which is the bottom end of the coaching salary scale.

Harbaugh was making 8 million at Michigan, and was offered 12.5 million on a new deal. Does Spanos even consider it?

I think Harbaugh ends up with the Raiders or Commodes.
Raiders seem like a team, that would let Harbaugh run amuck all over them.
Perfect fit.

There is a lot going on in this thread as I would expect from a Rah thread I suppose.
I have a question/statement of sorts.

Rah catches S4!7 for playing soft, we have been burned big in press. What are the other viable options? In press you get the chuck (contact) playing off you can read/react. What else is there? It isn't as though the options are limitless

I just don't think he has a shot at a HC job unless we go deep in the playoffs bc there are too many bigger names available. Sort feel he is the Rooney rule cover for teams instead of seriously considering.

That's it. 2021 and 2022 Rams at very top of not allowing explosive plays. Okay---it looks bad and there are other issues, too. teams get short completions and it frustrates people

2023 some more man and some more quick scores but it looks good but it frustrates people by giving up long TDs on regular basis.

Some folks don't recognize that it's not how close you are to the LOS, it's how close you are to the receiver when ball arrives. Off coverage does not mean the idea is to not break on ball and stop the play. Press ... it has downfalls, too. You can be far away from the
receiver when ball arrives.

Both playing in phase (a man technique) and playing out of phase (top down) have merit and all are used by all teams to varying degrees. Dallas guys like to play in phase. Diggs, Bland, same kind of player and pick a lot of balls. Why don't Rams draft guys like them? No idea. Ramsey likes to play top-down, out of phase. He feels like his break on the ball is the best way to win.

Just for reference
Press lines up 1 yard off (up to 3)
Cloud lines up 4 yards off (up to 7)
Off lines up 8 or 9, etc

Hard coverage is considered 3 yards or less
Soft = 4 or more.

Press -- can get killed with man beaters ... crossing, picks, etc
Then there are zone beaters, but there are safety MOF beaters and 2-deep beaters..

Depth of CBs can be a function of what you are doing with your slot (star) CB and your safeties to match the right routes. So if you play press you cannot play defense where you are reading releases . .. guys helping each other

I don’t think he cares if a team has a QB… he’ll want control and a shit-ton of money.
Washington would be smart to reset their franchise with him and they have deep pockets.
The only thing I’ll say about that is he’s he closer to his BROTHER

So what about Steve Wilks ?

Your saying Raheem Morris will be The Rams DC forever ?

IMO Raheem will take a couple Ram coaches with him ?

Tell me about Cobie Durant & what he is going to look like Sunday? Then everybody’s favorite Kendrick?
—Fullers ankle is going to make him slower. Is Yeast the guy ?

The Rams also started of with 6 DB’s against the 8ers.Reeder was getting a lot of Reps as well of late & was calling the defense.Sort of Funny the Trust Raheem has in him.

Staley had him in SD as well, but he was a BIG PART of his his number 1 defense when he was the DC for The Rams.

Solid breakdown, but if you’re looking at a whole from Raheem Morris’s standpoint. I’d say he plays more towards his personnel.Best example & him having his hands tied goes to keeping Jalen Ramsey happy.

He is HC quality & he has enough NFL credit to land a HC job.I know he is ready for it.

You know what PISSES ME OFF!!
Cheers to Houston first & Demarco has done an excellent job.

The 8er got comp picks for Salis & Mcducher in Miami.
That gave them the draft picks to get McCaffrey..Yhey (fans) were crying about the cost. FREAKING JOKE.

Now Steve Wilks ? In the beginning of the season there fans were crying about his defense. —In don’t know if it when he went back in the booth ? There defense played better once he was on the field.

No, they didn't
Reeder was getting a lot of Reps as well of late & was calling the defense.Sort of Funny the Trust Raheem has in him.
Yes. He moved into the MIKE role, moving Jones to JACK in base defenses. Previously in the base Jones was the MIKE and Roze was the JACK. In the 5-1 Jones is the MIKE, the lone linebacker. In 4-2-5 Jones is the MIKE and the other LBer is Roze. But sometime they replace a LBer with a safety and that has mostly been Yeast. Last year, for example, it was usually Rapp.

But yes, vs 49ers Reeder was playing starters' minutes because Jones didn't play

Staley had him in SD as well, but he was a BIG PART of his his number 1 defense when he was the DC for The Rams.
Big part? He was a part of it. Smart guy, more athletic than given credit for. But certainly not above average ... he is what I'd call a role player. He can play the MIKE in base but would never trust him in any other role. But that's me.

Solid breakdown, but if you’re looking at a whole from Raheem Morris’s standpoint. I’d say he plays more towards his personnel.Best example & him having his hands tied goes to keeping Jalen Ramsey happy.
Only thing I know for sure is Morris is not stupid or scared. I am not even a huge fan. I just got disgusted with the false narratives about the guy. Mostly on another board and Twitter.

He is HC quality & he has enough NFL credit to land a HC job.I know he is ready for it.
Agree. In some ways, it would be better for the Rams' fan base for him to be gone. So many fans have a visceral dislike for him as a DC. No amount of facts will change their mind and for 2 years they poisoned Twitter and boards, Youtube video guys I am familiar with ugly personal stuff, mostly born of ignorance that someone new wouldn't be a bad thing and him getting a HC job would be good for him.

That kind of hate will never heal with the small group that went full jihad against the guy.

yes, Yeast would play if Fuller can't go. Durant has been starting but has also been splitting some time with Kendrick.

But, here is a twist ... Duke Shelley is back. So, Lake could play safety and Shelly could play nickel (star).

Maybe could be this:
Base
OLB-Hoecht
DE-Williams
NT-Brown
DT-Donald
OLB-Young
ILB-Jones
ILB-Reeder
CB-Spoon
CB Durant
LS-Lake
RS-Johnson

Penny
OLB-Hoecht
DE-Williams
NT-Brown
DT-Donald
OLB-Young
ILB-Jones
Star-Lake
CB-Spoon
CB Durant
LS-Yeast
RS-Johnson

Nickel
DE-Hoecht
NT-Turner
DT-Donald
DE-Young
ILB-Jones
Star-Lake
CB-Spoon
CB Durant
LS-Yeast
RS-Johnson

Or this
Base
OLB-Hoecht
DE-Williams
NT-Brown
DT-Donald
OLB-Young
ILB-Jones
ILB-Reeder
CB-Spoon
CB Durant
LS-Yeast
RS-Johnson

Penny
OLB-Hoecht
DE-Williams
NT-Brown
DT-Donald
OLB-Young
ILB-Jones
Star-Durant
CB-Spoon
CB-Kendrick or Shelly?? Is he ready?
LS-Lake

RS-Johnson

Nickel
DE-Hoecht
NT-Turner
DT-Donald
DE-Young
ILB-Jones
Star-Durant
CB-Spoon
CB-Kendrick or Shelly???
LS-Lake

RS-Johnson

Also, possibility Johnson goes LS and Yeast or Lake RS -- Fuller been LS all year, 3 guys have played right side, Yeast, then Lake for a game then Johnson.

So, Johnson has played LS in past and both Yeast and Lake have been on right this year ... maybe they'd want Johnson where he's played before ...

With a passing attack like Lions, a lot of 3 wides, St. Brown in slot ... maybe Shelly would be better as the outside and Lake safety and Durant inside??

Then there is Kendrick ... he could play outside with Durant inside. How much confidence do they have with him vs Shelly?

Shelly has experience against Detroit...was a Viking and Bear. With Vikings an outside CB with Bears he was a slot. Have no idea if he's healthy enough.

But the answer is I don't know. All this may be moot if Fuller can play

I'd like to see the Rams play Kendrick when they're in the redzone. Durant when there's more field to defend. But either way I think Durant is going to factor in big time in how we play.

Also I was on Yeast's nuts quite a bit but now here I am hoping he is about to play the game of his life for us. Whether Fuller can go or no he has not looked very good out there of late. I suspect Yeast is about to get a start in a very big game.

If Morris leaves I expect he will be denied permission to take Pleasant. I still see Morris being "promoted" to consultant with Aubrey promoted to DC and Lake to DB coach. They could use Morris' potential as a HC as an excuse. But I think it's the only way they could have lured Pleasant back. The DB play has been far better since his return.

Jimmy Lake was designated as assistant HC which is a title given to a coach that precludes outside poaching of a coach for which the team has plans.

Can’t deny Pleasant if it’s for a DC position.

They probably won’t move Morris out of a position he’s excellent at.

Just a hunch.

I would be okay with Raheem's frequent use of soft coverages (I have a personal view of soft coverages as 7 yards or more) if he would blitz more often on 3rd and long. I swear we are last in the league in defending 3rd and long (I might be biased about that since I am a Ram fan). Maybe we do blitz more often that I remember, but I just recall time and again giving up a 1st down or just a yard short on 3rd and long.

I wouldn't be averse to seeing da Raiduhs have a resurgence. They've been shit for long enough to where I'd welcome seeing the Chiefs have a real threat in their division. Not to mention if Asshole Face sticks around all of a sudden Spanos looks like he's got a lot more time in the cellar in the days ahead. Win win. :laugh4:

That's what I heard from a podcast. The upper levels at Arrowhead are freakin' cold and windy anyway and it's supposed to by 8 degrees for a high, let alone wind chill. People would rather watch from home than endure that.
