LA Rams defense: Before and after Von Miller

Will the Rams sorely miss Miller’s presence on the edge?

By Kenneth Arthu

Von Miller is no longer on the Los Angeles Rams, so it is not a priority anymore to talk about Von Miller. But that hasn’t stopped Rams fans from talking about Von Miller since he signed with the Buffalo Bills, a discussion that got more heated on Thursday with reports that Miller was offered a more sizeable contract from L.A. than initially believed.

Miller also reportedly would have liked to sign with the Dallas Cowboys but didn’t get the offer he wanted to make that happen.

Ultimately what matters is that the Rams did not re-sign Von Miller and they have not done much to address the position he occupied for 12 games—including playoffs—with the Rams in 2021/2022. For the time being, Terrell Lewis, Justin Hollins, and Chris Garrett would appear to be the top-three options to replace Miller as an edge rusher opposite of Leonard Floyd.

It is considered one of L.A.’s most glaring needs, but that same issue didn’t stop Les Snead from eventually acquiring Miller for two day two picks prior to 2021’s NFL trade deadline and it may not mean that the Rams won’t be fine at the position when all is said and done.

How not fine were the Rams prior to trading for Miller last season?

Games 1-8

Prior to trading for Von Miller, the Rams were led in sacks by Floyd with 6.5, followed by Aaron Donald with 5, then Sebastian Joseph-Day and Lewis tied with 3 each.

Screenshot_2022_07_07_124904.png

As you can see, almost no pressure came off of the edge other than Floyd, who also had nine QB hits (I believe sacks are included in those totals, however) and five tackles for a loss. Lewis had only three QB hits and he was consistently playing over 30 snaps per game, peaking with 51 snaps against the Giants in Week 6.

Lewis had one sack each against the Cardinals, Seahawks, and Giants, playing in three more games after Miller was acquired and then missing the rest of the season and playoffs.

Hollins had two sacks in Week 1 against the Bears, but then no pressures in Weeks 2 and 3 before missing the next nine games. Hollins returned in Week 14 but only registered one QB hit and zero sacks over his next nine appearances, including playoffs.

The Rams registered 25 sacks as a team from games 1-8, allowing 218/323 pass attempts (67.5%) with 2,113 yards, 9 TD, 11 INT, and an 83.2 passer rating. Teams converted 42% of their third down attempts in that span of time.

It really matters a lot who those opponents were, especially when comparing to the second half of the season. So for some more context, the quarterbacks in those games were: Andy Dalton, Carson Wentz, Tom Brady, Kyler Murray, Russell Wilson/Geno Smith, Daniel Jones, Jared Goff, and Davis Mills.

How much did things change after Von Miller’s arrival?

Games 9-17

Let’s do some refreshment...

Terrell Lewis had seven pressures and three sacks in the first eight games.

Justin Hollins had four pressures and two sacks in the eight regular season games he played in.

Leonard Floyd had 6.5 sacks and 21 pressures in the first eight games of the season.

Miller was inactive during his first official game with the Rams, but then played in roughly 75-percent of the snaps over his first four starts. In those games, Miller had zero sacks and only one QB hit, but recorded one tackle for loss in each appearance. He had five pressures in those first four games, which is more than Hollins had in the entire season and almost more than Lewis in half as much playing time.

In his final four games of the regular season, Von Miller had five sacks and nine pressures, totaling at least two pressures in each start.

So in the final eight games of the year, Miller had five sacks and 14 pressures.

If you take Lewis’s first eight games and Hollins’ eight games on the year and combine them, they had five sacks and 11 pressures. But clearly this is not just swapping oranges for oranges.

In the final eight games, Donald had 6.5 sacks playing alongside Miller, followed by five by Miller himself, three for Greg Gaines, and two each for Floyd, Troy Reeder, and A’Shawn Robinson.

The Rams registered 22 sacks in the last eight games (fewer than the first eight games without Miller) and opposing passers went 179/275 (65%) for 1,871 yards with seven touchdowns, seven interceptions, and a passer rating of 84.9. Teams converted just under 42-percent of their third down attempts.

So statistically speaking, the Los Angeles Rams defense was roughly as effective in the regular season with Von Miller as they were without Von Miller. Let me make something clear because I know how unclear it will seem after reading that sentence: Von Miller is a fantastic football player—was, is, and in some regard always will be—and he is superior to the options that the Rams will have this season.

This is in no way meant to discredit Miller’s presence on the Rams defense simply because the Rams will have to move forward without Von Miller anyway. If reports are true, then the Rams did prioritize re-signing Von Miller and when that didn’t happen, decided to allocate those funds to a different future Hall of Fame linebacker who doesn’t rush the passer.

It’s somewhat interesting that the defense, on average, didn’t suffer immensely before and after Von Miller. That doesn’t mean that by some other measurement that there wasn’t a major difference before and after.

The list of quarterbacks that the Rams faced after starting Miller: Jimmy Garoppolo, Aaron Rodgers, Trevor Lawrence, Murray, Wilson, Kirk Cousins, Tyler Huntley, and Garoppolo.

Playoffs

The LA Rams also had the opportunity to play four playoff games, giving us an extended look at Von Miller alongside Floyd and Donald.

The Rams registered 12 sacks in those games: 4 by Miller, 3.5 by Donald, 2 by Floyd, one each by Ernest Jones and Robinson, and Gaines shared in a sack with Donald.

Miller also registered 11 pressures in the playoffs, which far outpaces the seven pressures that Lewis had over 367 snaps last year.

Opposing quarterbacks went 88/152 (58%) for 888 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions in those four games, registering a QB rating of 76.8. They were Murray, Brady, Garoppolo, and Joe Burrow.

What is clear is that the Rams defense played an integral part in the franchise’s first Super Bowl championship since 1999. What is yet to be determined is how vital Miller is to a repeat of that success and whether or not Lewis, Garrett, Hollins, or someone else will be able to viably fill that role. Or how much it matters.

The only thing that really matters today is that Von Miller is not on the Rams. No matter, Von Miller was not on the Rams this time last year either.

So in games 1-8 6.5 sacks by Floyd and 6.5 by edge other than Floyd. How many sacks in games 9-17 by Miller and by edge other than Miller?

We know that starters won't play in pre-season, so Lewis, Garrett and Hardy will get a lot of snaps.

If you think Lewis is going to get snaps in the preseason? I’d say your starting to loss your mind a little. Then again maybe a couple snaps at most.
I don’t see T. Lewis playing in the preseason at all .You’ll see it in a couple weeks on what The Rams thinking is though.I’ve seen enough to think Lewis is considered at starter.

Comparing Von Miller's performance in the regular season versus the playoffs is like comparing apples to oranges. He was a a jag in the regular season and hall of fame Von in the playoffs. I think he just got excited playing next to Aaron Donald and the thrill of the playoffs. But at 34 years old, I really don't see Miller recapturing his youth with the Bils. He should have stayed in LA because he loved playing with the Rams. He just let his ego make his decision instead of his heart. He might be a little richer in the long run, but he won't be happier. He also could have played the next 2 years with Aaron Donald where he wasn't getting double teamed every play.

Why on earth do you think that McVay is going to reward Terrell Lewis a MR53 position based on (all the hard work & sucesss Lewis has accomplished last two seasons) since he arrived ...meanwhile McVay mandates all the other non-starters on this pre-training camp roster to toil & endure pains & sprains every day in the heat to demonstrate they belong in Ramville for preparations for the preseason games in order to achieve a Rams roster position?

If that were the case, & that does take place where Lewis does not see any action in preseason games & is managed with soft special baby kitty mittens by McVay (again) .....I would have zero respect for him as an HC!.

Well the only response I have to that is will see.

Then again yesterday I looked at T. Lewis’s first few games in 2021 which were sort of impressive. You can join the crowd of doubters. I get that he has been hurt the first 2 seasons & has not preformed at a high level.
I know he has limits as a pure pass rusher. He is slow off the ball, but I see a few things he totally excels at.

I’m going to add HENDO in T. Lewis category as well. He is going to add a lot to The Rams, but not necessarily a starter.

My Ram fan bud, I would also suggest that you do an inquiry into Terrell Lewis's full college career on just how many games he was available to contribute to his Bama team. By the way, I am a glad leader of "the band of crowd of doubters".

The reason I suggest this is for you to get a full complete overview of his college & pro career {and to use the word you did) SEE the comprehensive portrayal of TL, what's been continuous, not since his arrival here in LA but as too to the unremitting duplicate initial same injury-filled saga in Tuscaloosa AL.

You will get no argument on what a less than 70% healthy TL can do playing in that Ram defensive front for the Rams pass-rush.....if he was ever healthy he is a potential all-pro prospect. TL was only available for 31 % of the defensive snaps & never healthy enough to play after the 12 week of the 19 wk season.

Last season the Rams limped weekly into each regular season's game in the OLB'er unit. Floyd was hurt early in pre-season & he was never 100% the entire season. Floyd was only available for 80% of the defensive snaps. Floyd has been in rehab & recovery since the conclusion of the 2021 season dealing with that Ankle. The last report was Floyd was NOT still fully recovered yet.

The other OLB starter Hollins was injured for most of the entire season & played in 19% of snaps. primary OLB'er reserve Og Okoronkwo was also injured & managed only 22% of the defensive snaps. Another OLB'er Garrett was unhealthy too in his rookie season with linger covid & saw only .03 % of the snaps.

If you were counting, that was all five OLB'ers suffering injuries & health issues in 2021. :scream:That is the amount of OLB'er the Rams went into the regular season with the last season thus the reason why the Rams paid such an extremely high future price for an aging OLB'er for only a half-season worth of work in the trade for Von Miller.

The OLB'er coach in 2021 is no longer coaching the OLB'er unit either. I believe Rams Org is still feeling the wounds of what happened in 2021 in that OLB'er unit being so unhealthy. I am sure there is still a sizeable amount of concern going into this season with four of the five same OLB'ers under contract again this season.

Watch: Leonard Floyd shows off ridiculously fast hand speed in pass-rush drill

Cameron DaSilva/ July 16, 2022 4:00 am PT

Leonard Floyd hasn’t yet established himself as a premier pass rusher despite posting 20 sacks in his last two seasons combined, but playing alongside Aaron Donald has certainly helped his numbers. Floyd has worked hard to continue improving since joining the Rams in 2020, putting together the two best years of his career – by far.

Floyd looks ready for training camp and the season to start, continuing to work on his pass-rush moves this summer before practices begin. He shared a video on Instagram recently, which the Rams posted to Twitter, showing how quick his hands are in this pass-rush drill.

It’s not exactly like Donald’s knife workouts, but Floyd’s hands are insanely fast in this video.

View: https://twitter.com/i/status/1548018612337721348

Floyd revealed that he had offseason surgery on his ankle, an injury that lingered throughout the year. So even with as productive as he was in 2021, he could be even better this season now that he’s fully healthy.

Jonah Williams is not just back, he’s breaking out for the LA Rams D

The saga of undrafted players who find their niche on the LA Rams may be an oft-told tale. But the truth of the matter is that it is simply not as common in the NFL as the Rams organization makes it look. And perhaps the most successful unit of the team is the LA Rams defensive line.

During the 2021 NFL season, the team fielded three players out of a total of eight who never heard their names called out during an NFL Draft: Marquise Copeland (2019), Michael Hoecht (2020), and Jonah Williams (2020).

In perhaps one of the more unusual career tracks, Williams was signed to the LA Rams roster in 2020 after the 2020 NFL Draft and was parked on the practice squad for the 2020 NFL season. He returned to the team in 2021 and made the active 53-man roster. In fact, he saw playing time if the first eight games of the season.

Unfortunately, the team needed to open a roster spot, necessitating a need to waive Williams. Almost immediately thereafter, Williams was signed by the Minnesota Vikings. But Williams did not pass his physical, was subsequently released by the Vikings, and cleared NFL waivers.

Jonah Williams just wants to play

The Rams resigned Williams to their practice squad, and he remains with the team to this day. But what does his 2022 NFL season look like? Well, let’s review his 2021 NFL season.

  • Player Snaps Tackles Sacks QB Hits
    Aaron Donald 1,041 84 12.5 25
    Greg Gaines 780 55 4.5 13
    A’Shawn Robinson 516 67 2.0 2
    Sebastian Joseph Day 341 38 3.0 5
    Marquise Copeland 108 10 0.0 0
    Michael Hoecht 110 7 0.0 0
    Bobby Brown III 22 1 0.0 0
    Jonah Williams 96 5 0.0 0
    Totals 3,014 267 22.0 45
Williams showed flashes of potential in 2021, a carryover from a solid preseason in which he recorded 11 tackles and 1.5 quarterback sacks in three games. Of course, in preseason games, players are platooned rapidly to give everyone a solid sampling for coaches to view and evaluate to determine who warrants remaining on the roster, who needs to develop on the practice squad, and who will need to find a new opportunity to play down the road.

So what about Jonah Williams leads me to believe that Williams is ready to break out this season? The 6-foot-5 275-pound defensive lineman is back for his third season for the Rams, a year when many defensive linemen begin to make their serious push for more playing time. His size and style of play will remind you of another undrafted former defensive end from the LA Rams, Morgan Fox, who has signed on with the LA Chargers.

An unnamed source who is close to the Rams and who is in a position to have relevant insight has indicated that Williams is showing significant progress this year and that the Rams defense is expecting big things from him. That fits with his current development and falls in line with many players who have made the leap from an undrafted player into the Rams’ defensive line rotation.

Will Williams make the leap this year? I think he will do more than show up. He showed signs in 2021 of making the jump. This year I believe he will remove all doubt, and step up in a big way.

I agree that Lewis needs to get preseason snaps. If the guy can't go then it's better to find out early so we can get a DE castoff who is healthy.

What's that expression, availability matters.

One would hope that Ram Players entering their 3rd season must achieve & attain an MR53 position through challenging & long demanding work..... NOT be granted or awarded an appointment to the MR53 based on the chance they might be a talented future player.

Good article.

I really think our coaching staff recognizes the issue with the health availability of our OLB positions and will keep both Garrett and Hardy on the roster and not risking a team picking one off the practice squad.
( especially if they are high on both the raw players as reported) Starting to feel a lot more at ease at least having some depth there.

Guess the ultimate test will be by week 5-8 to analyze where the group is or if a trade is required to shore up that Position group.

I decided to look up defensive stats - sacks by year:

2018 - 41 (Donald 20.5)
2019 - 50
2020 - 53
2021 - 50 (w/Miller half year)

Each of those years our run defense was sorely lacking. My point is the minus not having Miller at Edge will be minimal compared the plus of having Wagner/Jones at ILB.

The Rams were number 3 in rushing defense in 2020 and #6 in 2021

It wasn't, by any measure, "sorely lacking."

We have several guys (Hardy, hollins, Lewis, garret, etc) all competing for playing time and that rusher spot opposite Floyd. Super bowl team littered with stars and the most dominant player on the DL taking all the attention. This open spot is one of the most prime open positions in all of the NFL outside of QBs imo. It’ll propel the guy who gets it into a name since all the attention will be in stopping others. The ability to make tons of money is right in these guys hands to take. These guys are incredibly lucky to have this opportunity. If there isn’t at least one guy ready to take this golden opportunity and run with it - then they never will and we need someone else. I gotta believe at least one will take the Ram by the horns and run with it.

let's hope we do not fall into the same massive hole as we did in 2021 when the Ram had to deal with this year's 2022 second and third-round draft picks to fix that hole (Von Miller).

Snead has already traded away his 2023 draft selections:
1st to Lions. (Goff)
4th to Patriots.(Michel)
5th to Browns.,(Hill)
6th to Titans.(Woods)
7th to Lions. (Brockers)
