Somebody claims Woods isn't "the type" of receiver who meshes with Stafford as much as ARobinson will. Whatever. Kupp caught 75.9% of the balls Stafford threw him and we'd all agree, Kupp has great hands. So does OBJ and he caught 56.5% of the passes Stafford threw him. Woods caught 65.2% and VJ 56.2%. Robinson has played in Jacksonville and Chicago, with a variety of QBs, none as good as Stafford and the best he's done is 67.5% in 2020 (with Trubisky). He had a 57.5% with Fields (understandable) but from 2015 to 2019....missing all but one game of 2017....he had 52.9%, 48.3%, 58.5% and 63.6%. But he's supposed to be great at contested balls. Besides all that, Woods is an 8.6mil cap hit if traded prior to June 1st with a savings of 7.1mil.....a minus 1.5 mil net. Now does trading him sound like a wise move? It may be, now that they have Stafford (and his deal will get restructured and extended prior to Sept) McVay and Snead don't want to be caught short handed at WR, like in 2018, 2019 and 2021 (if not for the great fortune of OBJ coming available....don't want to bank on that type of event in the future). Any way you slice it, it's hard to make trading Robert Woods a good move. But those guys are a lot smarter than I am.
You're using those target stats for the %s. Target minus catch numbers don't just mean the player either dropped or caught the balls thrown at them.

I'm posting this list for others to see since so many think the player dropped the ball that many times. Which is false. Kupp did not drop 46 passes! He probably dropped around 6 total.

Targets = times thrown to, which includes:

1. a catch
2. a drop
3. defender tips ball away
4. ball goes into the grass to avoid a loss
5. ball thrown out of bounds to avoid a pick
6. ball overthrown
7. ball thrown behind the receiver

A player in the general vicinity of the ball thrown is awarded a target. It's for Fantasy players so they know how much a QB throws at a guy so they can get more potential points drafting him.

**added note... I'm also annoyed that Woods was traded for a 6th rounder. I understand why, and maybe he got to pick the team, but he got dumped off like a bum just the same.

It's the bonus money he was given last yr that gets spread out over the length of his contract in regards to the cap number. Once traded, you accelerate the remaining unaccounted for bonus money into this yrs cap.
Thanks for that explanation.

A good starting point just looking at this trade to help me understand this aspect of the game more.

I hope this means they can land a Stephon Gilmore.

Jourdan claims they are still after a good edge rusher. I don’t think there will be any difference makers left.

She also said they still hope they can get Wagner on the cheap.

Hate it, hate it, hate it.
Seems like a bad move to be frank.
I understand it I suppose.
Beckham is probably physically better than Woods but I would take Woods for all of his contributions besides catches.
But, it is what it is.

I was also upset when they traded Goff, and even more so at the multiple posters who kicked him on the way out the door. But I'm over it. Football's a business to which we happen to attach our emotions.

Beating the whiners in the NFCCG and then winning the Super bowl made me completely forget Goff. I do wish him well in Detroit though.

I don't believe Wagner is the sack monster we are looking for.

We need some true pressure that Von had in him.

I think Les had no choice. Doubt, he would trade Woods to a competitor in NFC. Also, as others said, Woods is one of the keys of the locker room. Trading him to a shitty team would have been a bad look for the rams… so, that leaves contenders in AFC only. Not many teams so had to settle for 6th imo.

I may be the only one here who gets lost in all this.......

How does a guy who was going to cost us 15.7 mil in cap space this year, gets traded away, and still costs us 8.6 mil in cap space.

Makes this deal feel not as good by a long shot for me.
It's not simple to explain. Short answers are often not completely accurate. Devil is in the Detail.

Short answer is that the Rams have to take previously paid bonus-$ onto their 2022 cap.

The best way to figure it out is to review contracts (once finalized ... Spotrac could be off here). Over time, it begins to make sense. I find cap management interesting and very relevant, so I try to follow it closely; and believe me, I make mistakes. So, please take what I write as my understanding and best-guess.

In this case, the $15.7M cap hit to the Rams represented Woods' $10M salary, $3.5M roster bonus (due tomorrow, I believe) PLUS pro-rated-bonus money (and maybe some other comp already paid). And that totaled $15.7M to the Rams' 2022 cap.

Tennessee is going to pay the $13.5M above. Spotrac already has it on the Titans 2022 cap.

The Rams have to take-on-to their 2022 cap ... as Dead-$ ... the pro-rated-bonus-$ (Already Paid) plus any additional bonus-$ (AGAIN, Already Paid) that would have been applied to subsequent years in Woods' contract had he remained with the Rams.

Even this is kind of a over-simplification.

There's definitely a few still out there. Not better than Von obviously but an big upgrade over Hollins/Lewis.
Von came with recovering from an injury.

My hope is with AD and of those that are still out there, can there be anyone Vonesqe?

... but there were posts exactly like this one to explain why moving on from Bruce after adding a "younger, bigger target" outside to replace him.
I dont think that was the general opinion, since the Rams skull effed Bruce who had restructured his deal to give up guaranteed money and then they cut him. That's why he signed with the 9ers.

We still don't know what we saved on Staffords contract and how ADs contract will look if he indeed comes back.

That said as a collective unit you could be better if you get some dudes that want to win. ZaDarius Wagner and Gilmore ZaDarius and 1 of the other two probably make you a stronger defense all around.

To me hunter would have been key because Hollins would be excellent out there with hunter AD up front and Floyd on the other side then you could consider the other two or maybe one. As of now though Minny saying they keeping hunter could be true could be posturing after 12am we will know.
Also maybe there is a reason ZaDarius suddenly backed out of his contract with Baltimore maybe a call from the Rams??? I find it odd that a very talented edge would back out and then have no market??? His back seemed fine when he came back and he has to pass a physical anyhow.

I'm going to miss Woods. One of my all time favorite Rams players not only because of his skill at WR, but his attitude, love of the game and just an all around cool dude.

Good luck Robert, you deserve a lot!

Oh it certainly was massively unpopular at the time.

But that never stops some from backing the company line every time...

Obviously I know that's not what anyone here is doing and the situations aren't all that similar beyond the surface level.

Thanks again for playing with this. It really helps.

I get the prorated stuff. Otherwise the Cap really wouldn't mean anything if you didn't count the bonus somehow.

I am a numbers guy and I would have thought I would be up more on this. The headfake sounds like how they work the bonuses. And those numbers may not be readily available at the time of the trade or cut. All what we hear is 15.7 mil. Which sounds astounding! But we already fronted the player 8 mil of that for this year.

I am going to use this emotional trade as motivation and keep track how all this plays out for my own education.

Or just start drinking and forget about it.

We had enough savings to get an edge and maybe a CB without dumping Woods like garbage.
Like garbage?? I don't know about "like garbage" I get the anger though, I'm pretty bummed out as well. He will be missed for sure, but what people are saying is true.... I'm sure we had better offers from crappy ass teams, but the Rams sent him to a SuperBowl contender for less. I really think they appreciated everything he's done for the team and just being the man he is, So they hooked him up. Really Tennessee? A fucking 6th rounder!!?? Good luck RW, you will be missed. P.S. I bet Kupp is PISSED!!!
