Rams cap off season with 48-32 win over 49ers: Instant analysis
By: Cameron DaSilva
With Todd Gurley injured and a first-round bye up for grabs, the Los Angeles Rams knew how important it was to beat the 49ers on Sunday and clinch the No. 2 seed. They did exactly that in dominant fashion, dominating San Francisco 48-32.
After a slow start from the offense, Jared Goff got it going in the second quarter and into the second half. He finished with 199 yards and four touchdowns on 15-for-26 passing, closing out the season with a 121.6 passer rating against the 49ers.
The defense was dominant right out of the gate, causing three first-half turnovers and taking it away four total times. Aaron Donald came up short of Michael Strahan’s all-time record, but he was still outstanding from start to finish.
The game was close to out of hand less than 18 minutes in with the Rams leading by 18 shortly into the second quarter. They padded their lead all the way to 31 points, but the 49ers scored two touchdowns to narrow the margin.
Game balls
- C.J. Anderson: 23 carries, 132 yards, 1 TD
- Brandin Cooks: 5 catches, 62 yards, 2 TDs
- Mark Barron: 6 tackles, 1 sack, 1 TFL, 1 FF
- Cory Littleton: 4 tackles, 2 INT, 1 TD
Stat of the game
- Rams were 10-for-16 on third down, while the 49ers were just 3-for-11
Game notes
- Donald didn’t break the single-season record, but he had 11 pressures and was double-teamed 15 times in the game. He did have one sack and three quarterback hits, also making one tackle for loss. It was a remarkable season by the likely Defensive Player of the Year.
- Goff’s stat line looks good, but he had some ugly misses. He has to play better in the playoffs if the Rams want to make a deep run toward the Super Bowl. He missed open receivers and was inaccurate throwing to others, but fortunately, he ended the game and season on a high note with a touchdown pass to Josh Reynolds.
- C.J. Anderson was a phenomenal pickup by the Rams, once again topping 100 yards rushing. He had 132 yards on 23 carries, giving him 299 in his last two games. He also scored another touchdown and had 22 yards on three catches.
- Cory Littleton had one of his best games ever, picking off two passes and returning one for a touchdown. Mark Barron also played well, stuffing the stat sheet with six tackles, a sack and a tackle for loss.
- Sean McVay’s timeout usage might’ve cost the Rams points at the end of the first half, leaving none with about a minute left. He burned their last one with the play clock running down.

3 key takeaways from the Rams' dominant win vs. 49ers
By: Andrew Ortenberg
The Los Angeles Rams beat the 49ers by a final score of 48-32 Sunday, clinching the No. 2 seed in the NFC and a first-round bye in the playoffs. They’ll be entering the postseason off back-to-back lopsided victories, and were able to rest Todd Gurley for both games.
Here are three key takeaways from the win:
1. Jared Goff has his confidence back
Goff was the subject of a ton of criticism from both fans and media after he had a brutal three-game stretch coming out of the bye. His play was largely responsible for the Rams losing consecutive regular season games for the first time under Sean McVay, and it wouldn’t have been surprising if he had gotten rattled.
But Goff didn’t let any of the outside noise impact him or his preparation and bounced back with two straight extremely efficient performances in two must-win games. Goff averaged 8.3 yards per attempt and threw five touchdowns with no interceptions in the wins over the 49ers and Cardinals, and only took two sacks in the two games.
Goff showed excellent poise and composure the past couple of weeks while dealing with the most adversity he has since the 2016 season, and his head is clearly now in a good space. It was absolutely essential that Goff got his confidence back before the playoffs started, and he did exactly that. He’ll be facing much tougher defenses in the postseason so there’s still a lot of work to do, but it was a great step in the right direction.
2. The defense has some momentum
The defense has been the team’s Achilles’ heel all season and now can confidently say it has some momentum heading into the playoffs. The Rams limited the Cardinals to just nine points and less than 300 yards of total offense last week, and were forcing turnovers left and right against the 49ers.
They intercepted Nick Mullens three times, and also recovered a fumble. The pass rush was alive for the second straight week, sacking Mullens three times and landing numerous other hits on him. Cory Littleton, who has struggled recently, came down with two interceptions, and even Matt Longacre had a sack.
Guys like Ndamukong Suh and Dante Fowler Jr. finally made some plays over the past couple of weeks, and the unit is trending in the right direction at exactly the right time. For a long stretch of the season, it seemed as if Aaron Donald was the only player on the defensive front playing at a high level, but it looks like he finally has some help.
3. C.J. Anderson is the real deal
After Anderson’s breakout Rams debut against the Cardinals, it wasn’t clear whether he was really that good or if Arizona’s run defense was that bad. Anderson answered all questions and then some with another dominant performance Sunday, rushing for 132 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.
He also reeled in three catches for 22 yards and was solid in pass protection. We
broke down recently what a smart move it was for the team to bring him in, and Anderson is making general manager Les Snead look like a genius.
The 49ers had the ninth-best rushing defense in the league by yards per carry allowed entering Sunday’s game, and Anderson is far more than just insurance at this point. McVay recently said he couldn’t 100 percent guarantee Gurley would be ready for the playoffs, and even if he is he might not be able to handle his full load. Anderson could very well have a significant role in the Rams’ playoff run, and at this point that doesn’t look like a bad thing.
