Meh , I would've made a push for C J Mosley . Or Earl Thomas
FS is covered so Thomas is out. DT, ILB and EDGE are still in play for FAs. Rams not likely to break the bank on any one of them but we can still pull in some serious talent with our cap situation still being around $30M.

I'm pumped, love this signing, besides being a great player he will bring a ton of wisdom and leadership to the back end of this defense.
Rams had lots of confusion between safeties and corners etc last year especially when Talib was out. Getting a really smart experienced guy at safety seems like exactly what we need to me.

Two big Positives here .... on the fact that Snead signed a Cap Casualty free agent which helps on next February's awarded compensation selection awards & this decision provides Snead with much more flexibility in the upcoming draft. I have seen several mocks that had us using our first selection on a safety.:shocking::sick:

I am also happy that the Lamarcus Joyner discussion has finally come to an end:deadhorse::death:.

As pointed out in several posts above Wade had a ton of mishaps involving our safeties last season & yes confusion & dumb plays played a major part of them. I believe that will not be the case with this veteran signing. I am sure that Talib is :D from ear to ear. AT has some veteran help to join him with this secondary. Oh by the way Eric give us about 3 1/2 inches of extra length added to our safeties now.

Snead will still need to draft several DB's to inject into this secondary with some young talent, length & size for the future. Snead can concentrate on snatching a top talent for the next five seasons with our first pick, either a NT or Edge Rusher is where I would be doing my homework.

So this lady goes in for a face lift. The Dr. tells her about new technology that works like this. They put a little knob on the back of you neck and when things start to sag you just turn it and everything tightens up again. So she goes for it. About 5 years later she comes back and says, "Dr. it's not working anymore, look at these bags under my eyes." The Dr. looks at her and said, "I'm sorry to tell you this, those are not bags, those are your boobs." The lady says, "Well, I guess that explains the goatee than."
A head goes in to a bar to celebrate his 18th birthday with his father who buys him his first beer. Several seconds later he grows a torso.

Bewildered by this amazing revelation his father encourages him to drink another beer, he downs it and he grows an arm!

A small group gathers round him by now and are egging him on to keep drinking, they are in awe at this miracle that beholds them.

And so he does, on his third pint he grows another arm. The head is overjoyed, "I must keep drinking" he thinks.

After drinking pints four and five he grows two legs. Feeling very drunk he runs around the place and everyone cheers with delight.

He runs outside, feeling the warmth between his toes and is hit by a bus and killed.

He should have quit while he was a head.

I think it’s cool that Eric Weddle was signed by the Rams. His cousin Jocelyn Weddle was one of my employees a few years ago. She didn’t work directly for me but was in my department. Saw her every day. Nice young lady.

Oh those silly Rams... Seriously this one really surprised me and I had to drive back from Vegas tonight listening to the whiners radio station that somehow came through on am damn it. Only way this makes sense to me is if they're planning on drafting another safety and figure he fills depth plus can do a lot of mentoring.

But I have always respected Weddle and it's kind of cool to have him in horns even if he's runnin on fumes and isn't exactly the deep middle playmaker I was hoping to see added. It's all good, and I can get behind this so welcome aboard Weddle let's go get another championship. (y)

Sorry ST Louis, but this is why the team moved back to LA

This has become the go to destination for veterans looking to win and play for great coaches.

If these veterans are already millionaires why don’t they just retire in LA??? You don’t need to play this sport at that point...

:blah:

The team didn’t move to LA to attract free agents and it’s not attractive because it’s in LA. It’s attractive because we are good and we are good because of McVay.

Will there be guys who grew up near the area who gravitate there, sure - that may happen a bit - and maybe even played into it here.

Would we be a free agent landing spot if we were 8-8 under Fisher but still in LA? No.

Let’s not act like the move solved our problems, McV solved them. Now if we could just have a home field advantage for home games, we could really be on to something.

Apologies, in advance, for the thread detour.

This is a really good signing and another LA-STL pissing match shouldn’t get in the way of that.

Luke Warm on this signing....34 year old Safety, but very smart and always seems to be in the right place at the right time, however, what does he have left? Two year deal and not over the top in cap, so hopefully Weddle is happy to be home and will strengthen the back end.

Age is like a cliff - at some point he will fall off and it likely will be a free fall. But based on last year’s play, he hasn’t fallen off yet. Could be tomorrow, could be in 2022 - but right now, he is a pro bowl safety.

Weddle did have a overall grade of 80.7 for a good rating from PPF. At his age you have to wonder what he has left in the tank. Consider the points of the deal like football IQ, experience, age and the cost this signing could be another solid move by the Rams. Add in the Rams ability to keep players healthy with a easier work load for veterans, the signing makes even more sense.

The Baltimore Ravens release S Eric Weddle, adding to a talent-filled pool of free agent safeties

NFL Insider Ian Rapoport has reported that the Baltimore Ravens have released Pro-Bowl safety, Eric Weddle. The move, which is likely a financial one, saves the Ravens $7.5 million against the cap and incurs just $1.75 million in dead money. Weddle may be 34 years old, but as he’s proved in recent seasons, he can still offer an upgrade to any safety-needy team in the market. He will now join other big names such as Earl Thomas, Landon Collins, Adrian Amos Jr., and Tyrann Mathieu in free agency.

Weddle entered the league as a second-round pick back in 2007, and he quickly developed into one of the most consistent safeties in the game. Now 12 years into his career, he’s graded above 70.0 in 11 of his 12 professional seasons, above 80.0 in eight of those seasons, and above 90.0 in two of those seasons, with his 2012 mark of 92.2 being the third-best single-season mark ever recorded by a safety. No safety in the PFF era has tallied more single-season grades above 70.0 or 80.0 than Weddle.

Weddle-Career-Grades-1024x576.png

Throughout his career, Weddle has not only been the model of consistency; he’s also been the model of durability. He’s played at least 500 snaps in each of his 12 seasons in the league, and he has played at least 800 snaps in 10 of those seasons. His 1078 defensive snaps in 2018 were the 14th-most at the position, while his 3193 snaps over the past three years are the seventh-most among safeties in that span. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, his overall career grade of 94.7 ranks first among 253 safeties with at least 1000 snaps in the PFF era, while his run-defense grade of 95.1 and his coverage grade of 94.1 rank second and third, respectively. Looks like a typo on the numbers,

While he’s not yet managed to replicate his career-best single-season performance of 2012, his 2016 season – his first with the Ravens – came pretty close. That year, Weddle was a force in all facets of the game and ended the year with run-defense (89.7 – third among safeties), coverage (88.7 – fourth) and tackling (90.8 – second) grades all above 88.0. In total, he accumulated four interceptions and four pass breakups from his 22 targets in coverage, he ranked fourth among safeties with 24 defensive stops against the run, and he missed just three tackles on his 96 tackle attempts. Not bad for a then-32-year-old.

In his most recent season, Weddle was once again an impact player against both run and the pass. He allowed a total of 111 yards into his coverage, at an average of just 0.18 yards per coverage snap that tied for the eighth-best mark at the position. Showing zero signs of slowing down, Weddle was at his best in coverage against wide receivers, yielding a passer rating of just 57.0 when quarterbacks targeted wideouts – usually the biggest and fastest players on the field – in his coverage. Again, showing his all-around ability, Weddle also missed only five tackles on 78 attempts and finished the year with 17 total defensive stops against the run – 17th-most at the position.

Good pickup for the Rams, he will start day 1 at a lower cost cap wise. Gives the Rams more leeway on drafting a FS, can still pick one early if a player they like is there, but can wait until day 3 and develop one.

It's about winning and the coaching/culture, not the city.
If it was just the city more guys would head to warm weather low tax places like Tampa.
The Rams were able to bring in vet FA guys in St Louis in the short Martz winning window too.

I love the signing. 34 isn't too old. Safety is a thinking man's position. He reads, reacts and then takes angles to the runner. He doesn't, necessarily, need the athletic quick change that is required of a CB. Sometimes good CBs move to Safety as their physical abilities diminish.

He'll do great for us. Welcome aboard young man.
