The Fins have to pay Bortles $6.5M minus anything the Rams offered. Any idea how much the Rams offered Bortles for 2019?

Nothing against Bortles, but I’d rather draft a young QB with more potential upside or stick with Mannion. But that’s just how I see it. I guess time will tell.

Why would you think the Rams won't draft a QB?

It's a one year contract.

With what pick, considering we need depth on the Oline, Dline, and linebacker? In all honesty that probably wouldn’t happen until the 4th round at best. Do you really want to depend on a 4th rounder as your main backup to Goff, especially if he gets injured? No, this was the best way for the Rams to go.

It's time to move on from Mannion. Bortles gives us a young veteran who has starter experience and has been healthy for most of his career. This is a good deal for the Rams and, in the end, hopefully Blake Bortles himself.

My bad - I get them damn Florida teams mixed up. The Jags owe Bortles $6.5M - Rams offer.

Fans will be much happier if Bortles comes in at player minimum cost and the Jags have to pick up most of the tab. jmo.

Yeah who would want a young QB who has won two playoff games and played well enough to win the AFC Championship?

Really don't get this take by Rams fans on here. IMO Bortles was the best case scenario for backup QB. Home run by Snead and McVay.

Couple of random thought here.

And in no particular order, btw.

Incoming FA’s, after talking to McVay, tend to not leave without signing a contract. Lol.

I’m curious as to the contract terms. But this looks like a win-win for Bortles and the Rams, although only for one year.

I, for one, now don’t feel that the season is lost if Goff misses a few games.

Assuming that we don’t lose Malcolm Brown, I think we’re down to just three “must haves” from this draft. One DL, one OL, and one edge player. All else is gonna be depth, hopefully. VERY doable for Snead, needless to say. And that largely frees him up to take bpa’s beyond those 3 needs. Exactly the type of situation that top teams like to be in at his time if year.

Oh, and this signing us a pretty good clue as to how McVay regarded Mannion’s upside.

So you're implying we can't draft a QB now that we signed Bortles to a 1 year contract?

.

i think bortle's game plan is to play a lot in preseason, which is a given with the rams seeing they rested the starters all of preseason last year. then to play well and with mcvay as coach he will be ready. then other teams will covet this new and improved bortles if their starter goes down. he gets traded and signs a new contract with the new team.

could be the rams game plan as well.

I like the move...although he was more bad than good.... Blake Bortles has played really well in stretches in the NFL... I think the momentum he had from a couple years ago was thwarted partly because of injuries to the Jags offensive weapons... When he had a healthy trio of Robinson, Hurns and Lee ..he played well...put up huge numbers..anyone who had him in fantasy football in 2015 knows what I mean....

they didn't keep all their weapons, they drafted pretty well..but then people got hurt...

Bortles with the right coaching could be decent....and I think he's an upgrade over Mannion..

in fact I'm curious now if Mannion will get a chance to be a #2 guy elsewhere..

I still think we should get another QB ..late in the draft or undrafted,.... to compete with Allen for the 3rd string spot

The one year contract means he will be a FA next year. It also means the Rams are likely to bring in a youngster to take on the backup QB role next year. If Bortles shines in preseason and backup duty he could garner some decent FA interest next year. This could net the Rams a 6th or 7th round comp pick.

Considering the OL, with pro bowl caliber bowl Saffold leaving, an ageing LT, two 2nd year interior guys with zero starts, pretty good bet Bortles with some scampering skills wlll need to be ready to play.

Good insurance move.

This.... I imagine we will draft a youngster next month around rd 2/3
Considering we don’t have a draft pick in the 2nd round and that we did just sign Bortles, while still needing help on the Oline, Dline, and linebackers, I just don’t think that sounds reasonable.
