Not height as much as a very slight frame. And he is nearly 26. He is not changing that frame. He is what he is at this point.

Hey, I hope I am wrong, but I just can't see how he lasts 17 games. So yes he could be a solid back up. I just see a guy like O'Connell having upside to start.
Now I know Goff is heavier but he also has a very slim frame. Many people doubted he could take a hit in the NF, but other than his thumb he hasn't been hurt. Sometimes looks are deceiving. The NFL is full of players that their body type says they shouldn't be successful. Here is hoping Bennet is one of them.

Of course, if he was the cardinals pick. I would be all over it.

I forgot to add that my wife is 5'3", so yeah I have that complex.
Ugh, as a teen, I wished I was 5’3” or shorter. My family was all shorter than me, and they asked me to reach up and get everything.

Did you like the Atwell pick? If not why?

I don't think they drafted Bennett to be Stafford's heir apparent. They wanted to upgrade the backup position. After last year it was clear that position needed an upgrade. You hope they don't need him but you want someone capable if they do. I think he is.

And BTW, if O'Connell played for Georgia, he would have been a top 15 pick at the very least. He made Purdue relevant for the first time in generations. They got to the Big Ten Title game last yr and he threw for 366 yards against Michigan... while playing for Purdue!

After looking that up, the pick bothers me even more.

O'Connell looked fantastic in his first preseason game. And while he is much taller/bigger than Bennett, I don't think he moves nearly as well as Bennett, which is an asset McVay puts a premium on.

McVay went to 2 SBs with two immobile QBs

Very true, although I wouldn't describe Goff and Stafford as statues, either. But the offense he runs is similar to the Shanahan scheme, which operates at a higher level with mobile QB. But then, I suppose most offenses would. Likely the reason the talent-challenged John Woeful and Bryce Perkins were able to stick around for as long as they did.

unlike most of you, i dont have much knowlage of collage players other than what comes out of the media and what i read here. His size worried me, but i was hopeful. Similar to bennet.

That was my point. I am sure there are a few of you who hated the Atwell pick due to his size, as did I, but ignore size in regards to Bennett.

And with Atwell you can use him judiciously to help keep him healthy, but the QB has to touch the ball on every play and he plays the most important position. You lose QB1, you generally lose. You can survive losing your #3 WR/ deep threat specialist.

Now I will not hate on Bennett. I hope he is the next Drew Beees, which means he still has to still gain about 20 lbs..LOL!

Good thing he’s QB2.

My projected regular season stats for Stetson Bennett as a rookie.

Pass attempts: 0
Completions: 0
Yards: 0
TDs: 0
Interceptions: 0

Rushing yards: -10 (from kneel downs he takes on Stafford's behalf in blowout wins).

Tell me you don't hope I'm right!

Point is I would have preferred a guy that has a shot to be a QB1 since our starter could be a yr or two away or one more serious injury away from hanging it up.

I guess some of us are more forward thinking.

He was a 4th rounder. Teams don't generally draft projected starting QB's in round 4, haha. Let's see how he grades out against other QB's in his class after a few years. At worst, he look like an upgraded backup for the most important position on the team.

I always believe that a player is going to be a success until he proves he's NOT a success or not capable.

Stetson Bennett has not only proved he's capable but he's constantly overcoming negative opinions and odds to do it.

That sounds like the mark of a winner to me

You realize many Heisman Trophy winners flopped in the NFL or were just mediocre. Guys like Flutie who suceeeded at every previous level. So you can't always hang your hat on that.

The kid obviously has heart and toughness and always had big games with a great, great football team behind him. I mean it's not like he carried BYU to 2 Titles.

It's just tough to beat physics. That's all I am saying, but I will root for him to develop into a fine QB, but I just fear that at his best he will be a tease as to whether he can be the guy and mostly due to size and arm limitations.

Now I am done on the subject. We beat this to death... so lets go Stetson and prove me wrong.
