If Wolford starts and wins, great. If he starts and loses, gonna be a long off season.
If Goff starts and wins, great. But he'll have to win the next week or it's a long off season.

All things being equal (long off season), I want to see Goff playing Sunday.

Good post. We're gonna need some offensive production to win. We're gonna need a very good defensive showing to win.
But you'll also have some that will try to factor in even in a win how they feel he looks. We get posts almost daily on what fans would do different as coaches or players, nothing is going to change that.

I don't have you on ignore the only people on my ignore are the ones that are always just negative or always attack posters and not posts. I'm all for discussion with differing ideas. I still don't see anything great from what Wolford did I did see some bad but it was hit 1st start. He shouldn't however be boosted as a good NFL QB or thrown in the trash heap after 1 game. At this point even with his warts I still think Jared is a better QB going forward. Only time will tell.
I agree. As you may recall I was praising the Wolf as QB2. Always referred to him as QB2. If we disagree, it is because I thought he actually played a very good game last week. Stats may not jump off the page, but after watching the game twice, I see more and more that I liked from him. It definitely bodes well for us either way to know we have a legit backup in case we need him. I trust McSlay to make the right call with regards to Goff's readiness. Go RAMS!!!

Everyone is focused on throwing for good reason - but honestly and i even heard McVay mention this. Throwing is not neccessarily the worry. It's taking a snap wrong, or getting hit and fumbling, or the ball slipping.

Goff having a weaker grip on the ball sounds like some scary shit to me.... he may be throwing okay but there is a lot more to it than that.

If you take all the critics descriptions of Goff this year and average them out, he's a good game or two and that's it. Well he's one lucky s.o.b. going 9-6 with only 2 good games. Losing has a way of making people see things from the QB that aren't there (or aren't possible to see) like 'lack of confidence', 'lack of leadership', 'no desire', 'carefree attitude', etc. Also every incompletion is his fault. Then some fans make the argument 2019 was more of an OL problem....3 rookies, 5 injured players etc.....and that becomes "an excuse" for bad QB play. 2020 had some bad games by Goff. In the first 13 he had 3 (SF, Miami, SF), then we lost to the Jets (1 pick) and Seattle and he didn't put the team on his shoulders and win it. Were they "bad games"? Many fans will look at the all-important QB rating and say he had 6 bad games out of 15 (all below 80 in QB rating). But how can you call the New England game a bad game? 24-10; 16 of 25 for 132 (all short quick passes) with a TD and a pick..... which was a great play by the DB. If we're going to look at QB rating AND use the eyeball test, after a so-so game in week 1, 8 of the next 11 were games with a rating of 94.8 or better, including 6 above 100. Then the New England game, the Jets game (86.9 with a pick) and the Seattle game, which might have been much different if we try a pass play on 4 shots from the 1 yard line in the third quarter. Truth is the guy hasn't had a stellar season.....not a 2017 or 2018 type year. But we're still playing when 18 other teams aren't and if he plays, we'll see what he can do. Personally, I think he's tough, he talented and he's had some stinkers. But some want to see him gone. Be careful what you wish for.

After the injury he took 19 snaps and didn't fumble one. He was sacked 3 times and didn't fumble. Scrambled 3 times and didn't drop the ball. Sure that's a concern but so is getting clocked by a 280 lb DE. He was throwing on the sidelines before the Arizona game and somebody posted video of him throwing in practice yesterday. I think he'll be good to go and if he is, the only worry is can we score more than Seattle?

have you broken your thumb or dislocated digits? I have... when it first happens its okay - before it swells and gets stiff.

The next day and beyond is when its bad. It's legit concern im sure the coaching staff is dealing with. Throwing is one thing.. but it's not the only thing.

No I haven't.

Does that restrict me from making the observations and comments I made. Can we not turn this into a thread where you have to have experienced a broken/dislocated thumb in order to comment on it?

So......how far 'beyond' is it stiff and sore? And looking at the video of Goff throwing yesterday, it didn't look like it was bothering him in the least. But what do I know? I haven't ever broken my thumb.

I would quantify his start as good for a first start from a QB with limited abilities from what we've seen passing the ball. Some other sites, including reddit which yes I know it's a cesspool and usually the lowest common denominator for humanity, was just silly with the Wolford hype.

oh for fucks sakes lol - im just making a point that it could be a legit concern.

Did you see him getting getting tackled in that video or having someone swat hard at his hand with the ball?

Its possible that he could throw fine but still not play.

tbh no matter who plays QB - our run game better produce more consistency than what I saw against Arizona. Our outside zone was horrible.

I have watched a lot of clips from talk shows, it's all everyone is talking about : Wolford or Goff. Most of them are clearly not watching enough football to say anything smart. But i really think the misdirection it creates can bring us a massive strategic advantage either way.
Pete has to work on defending a running QB who might not even take the field, must be really fucking annoying.

I was thinking about something else earlier : I wonder if this injury might not help Goff mentally. Goff got injured, and the team won anyways. To me that takes a bit of pressure off his shoulders : the rest of the team is good, he just has to come in and do his part, but he doesn't need to take all the pressure. If we get a mentally regenerated Goff under center and he has a solid game against the Seahawks, I have the feeling it might instantly make us a contender again, as our defense is clearly championship level. With Whit and Kupp back, we most certainly have a competitive roster, a lot can happen. After all we're 4-2 against playoff teams we played and would be 5-1 if not for that bullshit call against the Bills. Everyone has us dead in the water in playoff predictions, I think a lot of that might change after this game.

Couple things...
First I hope whoever starts plays well.

It is more than Goff being able to make throws.
  • Can he take snaps under center?
  • Can he hold onto the ball if he gets hit?
  • What is the long term danger of him getting hit in the thumb, or God forbid, he hits another helmet the same way.

It is great to now have a backup with some actual, high pressure, meaningful game time. Not just mop up duty in a blowout.

I think if Goff is healthy he starts.

My concern is practice is way different than real game play. One turnover can be the deciding factor in this or any game. Now forgetting Goff has had turnover issues basically his entire career. Graphic was shown this week or last week my concern is what the poster mentioned above.

If Goff throws a pick well that's what it is we live and die by the sword of it's a dumb play etc or hopefully he lights them up.

However I'd be pissed as I'm sure many of you would be if he fumbles because of the thumb stripped or has trouble with the exchange with a center or running back. Those as we know all to well can be game changers.

I'm not a medical expert but I am very experienced in fracturing bones... my bones. I've fractured my ankle, my arm, my wrist, my elbow, and MY THUMB.

I cannot believe Goff can be ready to play LESS THAN ONE WEEK after fracturing his thumb and having surgery. Even if he can grip a ball and throw it, he can't possibly have any touch on the ball.

I'd start Wolford based on that.

Come on, what's a couple of screws in a small joint? It's just his thumb... no big deal!!

Seriously, like you I know more about damage to joints than I ever wanted to. (Ouch.)

Pretty sure Goff's thumb is stable and and they can give him a minor pain killer for the game. And he can probably heal enough from small incisions in 10 days that he will not start bleeding on the football or the center. But if he doesn't have enough feel to grip and throw properly it won't work.

This is not a question about who's a better qb. It's a medical or maybe even a mechanical issue. Can Goff really throw the ball right?? Guess we'll find out.

Just saw an interesting article - no idea if this has anything to do with Goff's abilities, but McVay definitely opened up the play book with Wolford. It could just be that he finally decided to go for the win, instead of playing safe, or maybe it's the adjustment I've been hoping for after teams started sitting on our short routes - no idea, but interesting to see the analysis:

Not sure you will see this, as you may have ME on ignore after our back and forth this past week, but I agree and I think it's time we all got on the same page. I personally never meant to get into any arguments about one player over another, I was just happy to see VJ and The Wolf (sounds like an 80s TV action series, lolz) play some good ball.

Sorry if I mistook some of your posts as attacks. I think we are all a lil punchy after this year and season, but we damn sure all want the same thing.....for the RAMS to hoist the Lombardi in February 2021!!!!

View attachment 42633

Truth is your fine.Your dealing with a Poster who loves to attack but can’t take it.I guess that what the ignore is for.I’ll admit I’m wrong at times & can be a little negative.
I find myself a being a lot more right than wrong & usually staying positive when going back as far as The Rams organization goes over the years.
I think a negative last week I had was The Rams making the Playoffs. The Rams won & I think if Murray was healthy the odds are they lose. The Bears lost so The Rams would have been in losing 3 in a row and to a 0-13 Jets team at home.
Goff being hurt(not 100%) & the Hags on the road is not an easy task. The Rams usually play well in Seahag territory.I will stay positive this week & won’t have a prediction.Just kick back & enjoy The Rams getting an extra game in.
I like a lot of things about this team & this season on how it has played out.I have concerns about Jared Goff & my believe moving forward is The Rams go as far as Jared Goff can take them.I feel there has been a drop of & not a FAN of Kevin O’Connell. He seems to be getting a free pass this season.I do like some of the play designs especially with Wolford last week.I don’t LIKE a LOT of the Communication from Goff & Mcvay plus the details of the Offense & consistency.
—Go Rams - looking forward to Saturday.

yeah this is the big thing... i said this earlier.

Mcvay has stated there really isn't any long term danger with the thumb - but the big big issues is holding onto the ball - or getting hit in the thumb.

I think he can probably throw close to normal... but there is much more to it than that.
