There was an article about how much prep the refs have to do just to be as terrible as they are. In it they (one of the refs) mentioned that during the week leading up to a game they take time to learn what players tend to commit which fouls so they know where to look first the game. Which sounds a lot like confirmation bias in progress. They think player A commits a lot of holding, so they look for player A to commit holding, they see something they maybe was holding but they aren't sure, then they call player A for holding because they know he does it a lot.

What happens in a game is secondary to what the ref thinks is going to happen. Given the speed of the game and the fact that they are in possibly the worst position imaginable to determine penalties or assess anything correctly, it's not surprising that they have biases that bleed through. That and they're human. Except Vinovitch. He's clearly a soul sucking demon.

That explains a lot. I remember Greg Robinson used to get nailed for holding on any play that was remotely close.

On the Saffold Unsportsmanlike penalty, he shoved a Saint and the flag flew then he was blindsided by another Saint who had a running start and was knocked down. No flag for retaliation from a third party. Those penalties should offset.

The Saints were driving toward the goal with .33 left at they half. They were running out of time to tack on another 7. That penalty was half the distance to the goal and a first down. Lame.

At 8:01 in the third period Mike Thomas extends a drive after a very obvious push off of Peters. No flag. It was much worse that Peters Pass Interference, where he basically laid his hands on the receiver without grabbing or redirecting while trying to make a play on the ball.
You are correct, but Vinovich was not the one calling or not calling the lame penalties. Let's hope that guy got left off the crew. Including Vinovich there are 3 from his crew in this game.

Then how to explain Aaron Donald being held on most plays with rarely any penalties being called on opposing O-linemen? Surely these refs must be aware of that.

What bothers me the most about this is that penalties aren't being called fairly. The latest example is Marcus Peters being penalized(which he should have been) but Amari Cooper not being called even though he took a swing at Peters right in front of the refs. That should have been offsetting penalties.
Peters was the instigator but Cooper could have walked away.

Instant replay should be used on 15-yard penalties and especially on DPI where a team can gain tons of yardage because of a penalty. And yes, I'm willing for the game to be even longer than it is now as long as the refs get it right. The networks would be happy about that because they can show even more commercials. :sneaky:

The rule used to be that the retaliatory gets flagged. Not so much anymore

Since referees have such a tough job because of the speed of the game, shouldn't they be more in their prime? Shouldn't they have athlete like senses, and synapse? Does it really take being a ref for twenty years in other levels to be good enough to know the rule book?

With the money they make a person could live off of just being a referee in the NFL. Why aren't there more young people beating on the door?

Now that it's affecting the betting, I think the NFL might start taking notice.

I mean, I can't gamble, but if I were giving advice based on the data, I'd instruct someone to take the Saints ATS and bet the Over. Parlay it if possible.

That said, I hope McVay wrecks Vegas by just leading our Rams to march through New Orleans like Sherman marched through Georgia.

Except throwing a punch is an automatic ejection, at any time.

The CBS article mentioned that the same crew chief who reffed the Saints v Eagles regular season game, also reffed the same teams playoff game...all adding up to more than a coincidence??? Now, we have the same crew chief in both regular season and playoff.

A poster on another board I post on. We were all discussing it and thought it would be a good idea.

Someone pointed out that Al Riveron makes the final call on challenges, so it wasn't Vinovich who screwed the Hekker placement upon review.

Correct, but Al Riveron didn't initially spot the ball poorly forcing conclusive evidence overriding the head referee team's authority. Not only does Al have to overturn it, he has to diminish Vino's call.
