If we want a power OG, maybe it’s time to accelerate the learning curve of our International rookie, Mr Pircher???
I seriously doubt Pircher ever sees the field. IMO, the Rams will at minimum active Kolone (not a fan) and release Jake Gervase so Kolone will serve as the backup Center for Shelton. Really hoping the Rams sign someone else off another teams practice squad, but highly doubtful.

I have the bit the feeling we might have a season like the Chiefs last year. I think the first 8 weeks will be messy, I hope we then rally and go on a run.
With the schedule we have the season might be a long one, having a bad OLine in front of a 34 yo QB could turn it into a nightmare.

What ? Actually you could be right Brian Allen’s health wasn’t 100% right during training camp.I wonder about his bad snap. He was trying to hurry up to block & he had time. There was no pressure.

Don’t understand your take on Boom, unless it is his injury? When they say mcl I thought was always worse than a acl?Guess now it might be backwards. Big Whit I believe had a mcl ?
I think there is a big difference in being hurt, which probably happens every game to some degree versus being injured. I also think the money in the game has blurred the lines and players don’t always want to take a chance on losing $$$.

Of course guaranteed money covers some of that but, most of these guys think they have tens of millions coming on that next contract.

Jason Poe from the Whiners could be a target.
Physical mauler type G.
There was another more veteran guy on another PS, can't remember his name, who has 6 or starts under his belt in the interior as well.
I also don't thing the Rams sign anyone but if they did Poe could be an interesting signing.

Well The opening game was pretty bad. I blame Mcvay on his preparation. I’m not a big fan of sitting the WHOLE starting teams.IMO there are some players that need the work & confidence. It also goes to that competition thing.

I didn’t like how The Rams went about Brian Allen last season, but he proved to be the right choice. Shelton was starting ahead of him at Center for most of OTA’s & beginning of training camp.
Even giving Tutu reps wouldn’t have been bad. Crazy how everyone notices even a WR Allen Robinson got taken out of the game without to many plays called for him.

Yeah, you are probably right. I did suggest Pircher slightly tongue in cheek. He is a bigger OL man than what we have presently and that was what I was alluding to. Agree on Kolone but not sure what other options we have tbh.

IM telling you right now Anchrum is going to be good. I watch every Clemson game and he was real good and was his best against the top teams.

Hes going to do a solid job for us.
Dabo Sweeny was asked before the draft last year which Clemson players were getting overlooked by scouts yet who he expected to have good NFL careers. He talked for a while about Anchrum and said this guy was going to be a good pro. Hopefully he's a gamer and steps up for us because we need it badly.

Rams shuffle offensive line: Tremayne Anchrum, A.J. Jackson talk changes

5 takeaways from Monday’s press conferences

By Christopher Daniel Sep 13, 2022,

With center Brian Allen expected to miss at least two weeks, and possibly as many as four weeks, the Los Angeles Rams must reshuffle their offensive line for their Week 2 battle against the Atlanta Falcons. Those changes include Coleman Shelton sliding from right guard to center, and Tremayne Anchrum, Jr. stepping in at right guard. Alaric Jackson is also on deck to play left tackle if Joe Noteboom (listed as day-to-day with an MCL sprain) is unable to play on Sunday.

Shelton had to step in at center for Allen in Week 13 and 14 last year. He played well and expects to continue the production going forward.

Shelton doesn't expect Anchrum to need any additional pointers this week

“Not necessarily. You know I trust, we all trust Tre to know what he’s going to do and he’s proven that in practices and in the preseason. At center, you can’t try to do somebody else’s job. You got to do what you got to do and trust all the men around you and that’s what I love about our team.”
If only all of us could be so confident. The restructured interior will be somewhat of a work in progress until Allen is able to return to the starting lineup, but both Shelton and Anchrum appear to be ready.

Jackson ready if needed

“Just being here the past two years. Being around Sean, dude’s great. Encourages you, gives you confidence, so it comes from him for the most part. It comes down from (offensive line coach) Kevin Carberry, (offensive assistant) Nick Jones, Rob Havenstein, David Edwards... I’ll just prepare for those guys, for the most part.”
All eyes will be glued on how Noteboom progresses throughout the week, especially Jackson. The reserve lineman is prepared to draw from his previous experience, starting at left tackle against the Minnesota Vikings last season. He played well in that game, allowing only two pressures and no sacks

Anchrum’s versatility and mindset has him ready for this starting role

“It all it all starts with the mindset. On the line especially, we have to know what is going on across the board. It’s really imperative that we not only understand our jobs, but how our jobs affect the men’s next to us their jobs, and in their jobs outside of that and having a holistic, comprehensive understanding of the offense helps you do your job even better.”
The Rams are known for cross-training their offensive linemen and Anchrum is set to be the next player in this process, as he will slide inside after spending most of his time at tackle. He noted things happen much quicker inside, but most fundamentals will translate from tackle to guard.

The first thought after giving up a sack?

“’Damn.’ You take it for what it’s worth. First, you go over there and help him, make sure he’s okay. That’s your 100 million dollar quarterback. Then you kind of just learn from that play, lean on your teammates, check the jumbotron, see where you messed up. Flush it; next play.”
As with most positions in football, and for sports in general, the ability to move on to the next play after an underwhelming rep is imperative. Hopefully, he can keep those “damns” to a minimum.

Rams will put Kyren Williams on IR but don't plan to do the same with Brian Allen

Cameron DaSilva \September 13, 2022

1663108580617.png

The Rams got off to a rough start on the injury front in Week 1, losing both Kyren Williams and Brian Allen. Williams suffered an ankle injury that will cause him to miss 6-8 weeks, an unfortunate situation for the rookie running back.

Allen will miss 2-4 weeks after undergoing a knee procedure, leaving the Rams without their starting center for a little while.

Sean McVay shared an update on both players during the “Coach McVay Show” on Monday, saying the team will place Williams on injured reserve but doesn’t plan to do the same with Allen. Any player who is placed on IR is forced to miss at least four games, so it’s a good sign the Rams expect Allen to be back within four weeks.

“You know you’re gonna put Kyren Williams on IR, so that’ll free up a spot,” McVay said. “With Brian, don’t expect that to be something that’ll be quite that long-term where you want to eliminate his ability to be available for four weeks. Right now, we’re in the early processes and parts of kind of getting the game plan together from a personnel standpoint, both offensively and defensively with how we want to match up with the Falcons.”

Coleman Shelton will be the team’s starting center this week against the Falcons, which will cause Tremayne Anchrum Jr. to slide into the right guard spot. Jake Funk will also help replace Williams as the No. 3 back.

McVay said the team will always look in-house for replacements first before exploring outside options, but he wasn’t completely against adding depth if needed.

Coleman Shelton ready to step up at center

Sep 12, 2022 at 02:15 PM/Stu Jackson

https://www.therams.com/news/coleman-shelton-ready-to-step-up-at-center-falcons-week-2-2022

Coleman Shelton's experience at center last year came on short notice.
Starter Brian Allen went down with a knee injury on the first play of the game against the Jaguars in Week 13, abruptly pulling backup Shelton into action. Shelton performed well, and did so the following week against the Cardinals, too.

Collectively, it gave him a solid foundation to draw upon as he returns to that position this week against the Falcons, in wake of Allen being out 2-4 weeks after undergoing a knee procedure.
"It's just going out, and last year, it was kind of just taking advantage of the opportunity," Shelton said during a video conference Monday morning. "Now I got that experience, and I'm able to go out and just have confidence in my play, and go out there and give it my all."

The position isn't brand new to Shelton.

While he was repping at right guard, he played center in college, starting all 27 games there across his junior and senior seasons at the University of Washington.

According to Pro Football Focus, Shelton was stout as both a run-blocker and pass-blocker. He didn't allow a single pressure on three-step dropbacks during the 2017 season, according to Pro Football Focus, tied for the fewest among draft-eligible centers. Furthermore, he graded out No. 7 among that same group in run block success percentage at 91.1.

"It's like having a coach on the field," said offensive lineman Tremayne Anchrum Jr., who is slated to take over next to Shelton at right guard with Shelton moving to center. "The guy's incredibly smart. He's super athletic. He's very technical. The guy thinks three, four steps ahead. I think having him on my team playing next to him has been such an advantage for me. Just being able to soak up information from him like a sponge, being able to watch his techniques because Coleman is not the heaviest guy. But when Coleman is out there and he's playing, he's sharp on his technique. He's very diligent with body positions, he's always in the right positions, and you can really take a lot from that when you take how he looks at the game."

Shelton's performance against the Jaguars last season earned praise from Rams head coach Sean McVay, who lauded Shelton's toughness and steadiness in the run game and the pass game, as well as his communication and command.

He'll be asked to do it again while Allen gets healthy, and his teammates are confident he'll get it done.

"It's sad what happened to Brian, but we're going to be just fine with Coleman at center," Anchrum Jr. said.

He's also very smart. Knows football. He's got another 2 years on his contract and won't be a free agent until 24. It would be nice to not have a spot to fill next year after Edwards leaves.

I think that, at times, trying to parse out who the "weak link(s)" are in an OL can be difficult.

An OL is not just a collection of individual players, its a unit. Its a Spartan phalanx that works because of the coordination of many.

So... who caused the phalanx to fail? Was it a single weak link? Or was it the lack of coordination of the unit as a whole?

Guess we'll see soon enough.

I gotta disagree. Pircher has more potential than, say, Bobby Evans, and I think that he could potentially see the field if there are - fate forbid - more injuries. Pircher has seen time at four positions, and he's had reps at center in practice, so I don't think it's farfetched to see him brought up.

I think for game one we could say the off season process failed. With 2 of 5 new players in the mix they needed more live action reps. I believe the results would have been much better had that unit played a few quarters over those 3 preseason games.

The line should take a step forward vs Atlanta. Their front is nowhere near what Buffalo brought. Boom won't have a HoF rush to cope with. Shelton is at least equal to Allen, and maybe better. So this really is about Anchrum coming in and kicking some ass and these guys playing together. Hope he takes advantage. :thumbsup1:

Actually the Thebans crushed the Spartan phalanx at the Battle of Leuctra in 371 B.C. by overloading the left wing and breaking through. Unfortunately for the Spartans the phalanx was not designed to overcome a breech in their shield wall and the Thebans simply outflanked them and the rout was on.
