You know what's great about today's Rams? That here we are with no cap space and a dude like Watt comes available and we get mentioned. That's some cool shit right there.

Can't rule the Rams out of anything. I love it.

Factoring in health and durability, would you rate JJ Watt ahead of Michael Brockers at this point in their careers?

I’m not sure that I would. Thought Brockers was terrific this season.
Hard to tell without knowing what Watt will demand for salary but at this point I don't see much of a need to go for Watt. He has been great he was good on a really bad defense but the last few years he's had a lot of injuries. Great guy and has been great on the field just not sure I'd roll the dice he's healthy for a full 16 at this point. Would rather spend our resources elsewhere but I also wouldn't be upset if we went for him. Kind of sitting on the fence but there are so many unknowns most of all where he wants to go.

Watt is an All Madden pipe dream, and is unnecessary for us at this moment. I wouldn’t take it.

I agree, plus Brockers is great as a team leader and an AD favorite.

Yeah. The thing that strikes me about JJ... he seems an old 31.

Some players just don’t age well. He feels like one of those types to me.

BTW I worry this about Kupp too.

JJ Watt to the Rams

Pros:
Adds position flex if Morris wants to transition to a 4-3 as he can play both the 5T and 4-3 DE or even if he just wants to run that look against certain offenses.
He's never not been the focus... and rest assured AD would REMAIN the focus...meaning a LOT more 1-on-1s
He's a veteran leader.

Cons:
As CGI said, he's an old 31
Rams play on an artificial turf and even the best turf is harder on joints than grass
He's likely to be expensive and would impede any chances at a stud like Corey Linsley or a pipe dream like Allen Robinson.

Donald, Joseph-Day
and Brockers, with Watt (in Fox’s role), Robinson (big cap #) and Gaines in reserve.

That’s a lot of talent, and cap space for one position group.

Just don’t think it works for a team that needs to create about $25-30M of cap space just to do business.

In fact, I think Brockers would have to be moved; and I thought he was terrific last year.

For me this would be more about an opportunity to give AD pass rush help.

For a basketball analogy, AD is like LeBron - the other pass rushers just have to hit open shots, which they did last year. IMO our defense became elite because of SJDs massive jump and Floyd - for run defense.

When AD was out against the Packers, everyone looked like a JAG. So we could run it back and bank on AD being healthy - which may not have won us the game anyways - OR we can upgrade something that's a relative weakness, which is our pass rush.

The right thing to do IMO to make this team better is to let every UFA walk, restructure contracts, sign Watt and a center, cut A'Shawn, Young and a few others to make the space if needed. Brockers would be a last resort but I'd do it if necessary.

I don't think we really disagree here.

Should the Rams lose Floyd, I also think finding another pass-rusher is a top priority ... along with interior O-Line, CB-depth and a deep-receiving option. However, I don't think D-Line is the best spot to find a pass-rusher. I would focus more on the Edge.

Also think we are reading contract #'s differently. I don't see much cap relief from releasing A'Shawn Robinson. However, Sptrac and Over-the-Cap are not consistent in reporting his contract details.

Yeah, true. If Donald isn’t getting an exorbitant share because of doub/trip teams, someone else MUST get them. That’s the expected offset.

Some player like Watt, gets Donald better matchups. He can make a run at sacks.

One thing that may factor in here is the lack of DL depth in this draft. I have not watched all the DL in this year's class, by way of disclaimer, but comparing this class to the last couple years of classes that had insane depth at the position I suspect maybe the FA DL get a little extra focus by teams.

Oh and btw speaking of the last two DL drafts... Sure seems like that many quality DL going into the league turned that offensive trend clock back a couple ticks eh?

I think we will need one OLB minimumly, but I would look for an undervalued FA not in the draft. Draft maybe to augment but not to replace Floyd.

What i liked about Floyd was his ability against the Run something Fowler wasn't as good at. Watt brings that.

Watt to me is on the downside of his career. A lot of injuries in the last 5 years.
