The business side of professional football strikes again…..I remember on that podcast i posted a while back, he told the interviewers he was excited to seal his legacy in his hometown and the HOF.
It's a little sad that it has worked out this way for him, but nobody is at fault, really, with how well the offense is doing. Maybe this is why McVay was so interested in Tutu's urgency...
Exactly what I thought!I guess he's used to being on IR at this point in the season?
Beaten out? DJax was never going to be the third receiver. He knew that. But he expected to get some passes his way and, based on his play, deserved to. A better question would be why McVay didn't use him more.Keep in mind that Kupp has a tendency to get hurt. And it's a 17 game season this year. And when you remove him having a depth option like DJax would be immensely valuable.
It's just a fucking shame his ego can't take that he was beaten out. The guy must have thought McVay would play him because they were buddies or something. Jefferson IMO needed a push too, or at the least the competition from DJax was good for him. But DJax was never going to be a primary threat in this offense unless Jefferson tanked in year two.
Now if we lose Kupp our depth looks way worse. This is why I'm pissed about DJax being DJax.
My guess is when Djax is in the game we telegraph pass more? I wonder what the analytics show, but I doubt we run the ball much with DJax on the field. Van is a great blocker and with him Kupp and Woods defenses can't key into what we're going to do on any given play. Still though, McVay had to know that having coached DJax in Washington. I definitely think he told DJax he would have a much bigger role. Maybe he didn't expect Van to make a big 2nd year jump? But after the DJax signing we drafted Tutu with our first pick. So that had to make him scratch his head a little bit. Taking a late round flier on a speed type WR makes sense given DJax's injury history... but to use your 2nd rounder on a speed guy? IDK just weird overall strategy by McVay if he really made DJax believe he would have a significant role. But who knows how those conversations went before he signed with us. Regardless.. IMO all this does is hurt our depth. If we stay healthy at WR it shouldn't be a big deal. Plus we get Tutu and Harris more snaps and let them develop. Plus we'll likely make a signing in the next few days at CB or OL/DL which we'll have to factor in as well when evaluating this move.Beaten out? DJax was never going to be the third receiver.
