Whatever direction that McVay goes, I suspect he'll stay with a defense that disguises coverage. Maybe Fangio, maybe MacDonald's scheme, maybe something else. Just a hard time thinking he'll go with someone ala Quinn who has a static back 7 when the top guys like Mahomes will just eat it up.

I see zero chance of that as well.

Read today that the Rams have scheduled Defensive Coordinator interviews with Brandon Staley and Ravens' DB-coach Dennard Wilson, who coached with the Rams under Jeff Fisher; and later with the Jets and Eagles.

One thing Jourdan noted after the Superbowl win was how un-deliberate the Rams were in making decisions. There were some mitigating factors like in FA with the Miller dabacle and pivot and the urgency to fill coaching positions with a truncated timeline but she implied that McVay was like, never again.

I suspect this will be a lengthy process before we get our D coordinator for next year.

Too bad it's not Hewitt. He was their pass game coordinator for the D. Though he'll probably replace MacDonald if/when he gets a gig.

Yeah but it’s not 3rd and 3 in those scenarios

There were only 2 in that game --- check alignment

and for good measure the 3rd and 5 and 3rd and 6 --- there were no 3rd and 4

You can check the presnap alignment yourself. And it would be similar in all Fangio games...

You say what the implication is ... I read it as relating to Rams defense for last 3 years and perhaps the Rams were bad
at 3rd and medium?

If so, 3rd and 3 is really short yardage but I've grouped it
3rd and 3 to 4 = 8th best in NFL
3rd and 3 to 5 = 5th in NFL
3rd and 3 to 6 = 7th in the NFL

I usually group 3rd and 1-3 (short); 4-6 (medium) , 7+ (long) but there is not any preventing at looking at smaller groupings

I think sure, Rams could have been better in 3rd and medium but they were not all that bad, either

Frankly I like Dennard Wilson. In the video it was off of one season and he wasn't the DC. This guy is on the rise and IMO offers a real contrast to Morris. He's coming from schemes played aggressively which is IMO what is lacking in Morris' defensive style. I would rather the DC force the mistakes rather than sit back and wait for them.

If Wilson can bring elements of the Raven's defense to the Rams I'm all for it. I've been a fan of the Raven defensive scheme since Harbaugh got there. It's why I expect Jim to play his defense likewise with the Chargers.

This is a good choice for an interview of a coach on the rise.

BTW IMO I think this DC change was coming with or without Morris being hired. I think Kroenke is behind this because he's spending millions and getting a mediocre defense in return.

He's never been one. The video was done by an Eagles fan who offered his opinion ... Wilson was being considered as a candidate for DC in Philly -- at least this guy thought so, no different than here. Wilson didn't get it so he goes to the Ravens. He's not the DC there, either.

I look at all the evidence, the good and the bad and don't get locked into an opinion based on a lack of information.

The truth is no one knows a lot about him - other than he's been called a good DBs coach. The closest he's been to a coordinator is being a "passing game coordinator" on defense. Whatever that is under Gannon and Gregg Williams.

I do know for sure one of the staffs that he worked on didn't appreciate him-- but I take that as it was something personal. I don't know why or anything about it.

And if the Rams hired him, I'd have no problem with it. But I simply don't know anything about him other than where he's worked.

I don't know what his preference of defense is, he's been Fisher/Fangio/Macdonald, etc. if they hire him THEN we and see what he says and what Jourdan reports.

One thing for sure is that I trust McVay to make a good hire whoever it is.
