If Allen weasels into starting center i will withdrawal my 10 win prediction.
Me too.
does this mean the rams have a plethora of starting calibre centres or they have none?

.
They could just be getting Allen Reps with Stafford in case he’s needed. Or as others say, maybe Evans does not look good.

I might mean they don't like Evans at guard. I don't really have any strong positive opinions about Allen. Just saying it's possible they feel the line is better with Allen at C and Corbett at guard that with Corbett at C and Evans at guard.
Some seem excited about this possibility. Not me. I’d prefer Evans greatly improved. I don’t know how Allen improves with a full season with a slow healing knee. Maybe he’s pass blocking well, or better than Evans. That was Evans weakness. They had chances to draft centers and passed. I hope it does not come back to bite them.
If he manages to find a way into the starting center position then that means he beat out Corbett which would be a pretty good thing?
Could be yes or could be no. If it’s because Evans does not look good then the line is status quo from last year with a weak spot at guard or center.
Contrast that with Blythe btw who was really bad at isolating ILBs. Makes for an interesting dynamic.

Whatever they feel their best 5 is though. I don't think Carberry is gonna play favorites.
I saw Allen move well but he was easily avoided. He rarely landed his block, at least when the run was outside.

I share @TexasRam concerns. How does Allen improve technique by not playing for a year and a half?? It would be great if he turned into a good player but this could just mean that they gambled on Evans and lost. Allen was not considered an upgrade over Blythe. Remember how much better Center got once Blythe took it over? So it could be that they now have less than Blythe. Ouch. They’ve had three drafts to find a center. Allen was designated as a backup a few weeks ago. I don’t see how this is something to be excited about.

Ramily. Take a look at the 2020 NFL draft results. There are very few players chosen after Lewis that have already made an impact in the NFL. People are acting like there were dozens of more guaranteed impactful players available with the R3 pick used for Lewis. Lewis may be chronically injured but it’s way too early to call him a bust. Chillax.
I didn't call him a bust. I was just referring to how he had all the measurables and talent but had a pesky knee.

I like that the Rams are getting Allen reps with the #1s. I'm not down on him as many others are.

If Corbett is the starting OC who is his backup?

What if Evans isn't holding his own at OG?

I think Allen is going to surprise posters in a good way when called upon to play.

Allen being even a capable starter really strengthens the depth of the oline and probably allows Corbett to slide to guard if anything happens to either Edwards or Evans, allowing Notebroom and Anchrum to focus on the backup tackle spots respectively.

I share his concerns too. But it's really early in camp and we're gonna see a lot of him in the preseason games.

So for now it's nice to see a positive review on the guy.

CAMP REPORT AUG 9

This will be a brief report as I just read through this thread and I see Jordon doing her best again. Everything she is reporting is what Bubba and I saw today.
Seeing Allen at C and Corbet at RG was a shock. But even more shocking was all the different looks the O line had. It was almost like they had a pass blocking line when it was a pass play and then changed out everybody on the O line for a run play. Lots of players getting lots of different looks.
K. Orr is something else! What a great pick up by the Rams staff. Pass break ups, pass defended, almost intercepted one on Higbee.
Van Jefferson is light years ahead of last year! He runs great routes, gets good separation and when he is covered tight, high points the ball and comes down with the contested catches. Some of his moves are impressive. He's breaking a lot of DB's ankles out there.
Jake Funk is just fun to watch! He ran one in from about 8 yards out, good cuts, balance and fast. No one really touched him. I guess we could give credit to the O line for it's blocking scheme.
D Henderson broke off a long run due to some excellent blocking that created a huge hole up the middle.

I think today the D won. Had a few sacks, a couple of tipped balls and plenty of pass break ups. The O had it's moments as previously stated, but I felt today was the first day that my Rams may actually be human and not all have super powers! We're going to win a lot of games but we will also lose some in the process. My prediction? 13-4 at the best and 11-6 at our worst.

Now to edit the pictures I took and post those in another thread later tonight.

You all take care,

VRF

It's more of a swing and a miss, than a bust.

The truth is, nobody knows if Lewis is going to be a bust or not.
He can't stay on the field long enough

Yes. Whether or not this implicates who plays center it highlights the ripple effect from losing Akers.

Allen may have played himself into a more real competition with Corbett, especially if, having gotten long looks at Henderson, Jones and Funk, they don't think they'll be using as much of the gap and trap scheme this year like they were with Akers.

Can DJax get behind the D anytime he wants? He may only need to play 5 or 6 plays a game to score 2 TDs/ game. I would open the first few games with a deep shot to DJax until teams expect it then hit them with a run. But IMO any time DJax is on the field he needs to go deep. Keep his hammies warm on the sideline and just run go routes when on the field. If teams roll the deep safety to DJax somebody will be open or the box will be light.

Good practice today. Full pads. They got in a lot of snaps 7 on 7 and 11 on 11. Looks like Jordan and VFR have posted the best highlights.

Joseph-Day and T Lewis not practicing.

Got here early and the first guys out shagging punts from the punt machine the same add Atwell. He looks good. I still think Calais looks the best. I have to mention here that this seasons TC they have practiced ST drills a lot more than in past TC's. Especially punt returns.

Funk, Skowronik, Hodges all out early stretching and warming up. 3:00 they are all on the field together doing stretching and warm ups.

As posted eariler 11 on 11 had a new look on OL. Brian Allen was at C and Austin Corbett RG, but not always. Evans got snaps in at RG and Corbett got snaps in at C. Didn't see anybody else play LG, LT and RT other than Edwards, Whitworth and Havenstien.

2nd team OL had some changes also. Anchrum was the only one to play RT, Shelton and Evans played RG, Kolone got a lot of snaps at C along with Allen. Brewer and Noteboom always at LG and LT. Didn't see Aleric Jackson out there at all today.

I'm guessing thery're still trying to get a feel for thier backup OL. Evans seems to being demoted. Shelton didn't help his cause with bad snaps at C. Kolone didn;t mess any up helping his cause.

There've been lots of discussion here at ROD about Allen. My take: Allen has bulked up and gotten stronger. He looks 10-15lbs heavier and much thicker than 2 yeas ago when I last attended a TC. He gets off his snap very well and has held his own against SJD, Gaines and A'Shawn. He's opening holes in the run. Corbett is a better G than Evans and it looks like at this point Allen is as least as good as Corbett at C. This is NOT the Allen we saw 2 years ago.

Don't be surprised folks if Allen ends up being the starting C game one of the regular season.

On D with Lewis and SJD out today Gaines filled in nicely at NT, and Bobby Brown III is back and got work in with the twos as did Banks, Copeland, Williams and Brown IV. Rams have some hard decisions to make at DL depth.

Some notable plays:

Kendal Blanton with a good grab on the sideline
Stafford to Kupp over the middle
Stafford hands off to Funk with good moves to gain 8 or 10
Henderson with a huge run to the right
stafford to Jefferson for 35 or 40 for a TD
Djax a quickie over the middle
TuTu from Hodges for 15, TuTu has impressed me with good route running and good hands.
Higbee gets a bullet from Staffor over the middle. (I like all the plays going over the middle)
Kolone with a ad snap but Perkins picks it up and makes a good pass to Koski
Perkisn with a td pas to Mundt in the back of the endzone. Mundt ha been having a very good camp
Henderson with a good run up the middle (Corbett and Allen opening a big hole)

Really fun practice. You can see it coming together. this is the deepest Ram team I've seen at TC. Deep at WR, OL, DL and S.

My players of the day: Jefferson, Allen, D Jax, Orr, Ramsey

Now comes pre-season games where depth will shake out.

Not much more to add that hasn't been already. Jordan Rodrique stealing my thunder. What a difference she makes, I love her reporting. We'll be there tomorrow for the last day for fans.

Love, love, love the insights.
One of the things I thought was a positive about Atwell is his style of play. Unlike a lot of other smaller WR/gadget players.. he seems to be a real WR. He tracks the ball over his head on deep throws (or did in college, anyway) and catches with his hands. Runs routes.. a real WR, not just a small athlete put at the position. I'm hopeful about him.

I hope we're not talking ourselves into Allen. I'll trust your eyes on the added bulk.. getting overpowered was his single biggest problem, if I remember correctly.

I am a big Jourdan fan.. She's absolutely incredible and we should enjoy her while she's on the Rams beat. She's simply too good to be only on a team beat for too long.. and she cares too much and loves football too much. Kid is heading for really big things

A T Lewis comment.. I really had hoped for something from him this season.. even earlier today, before McVay's comment today about him.. that I hoped they could manage him.
I'm not really thinking that's going to happen. A week in, when they were already trying to minimize his reps, etc... he's "got something going on"?

I'm going to just focus my hopes on Hollins & Obo.. and hope Lawler can be a solid backup and that Garrett can learn enough to make a play or two in the last 3rd of the season. He's got a lot to learn, coming from where he did.
