With him being a GM of an actual team, Mayocks long lists of sources will dry up instantly. Then we’ll see how much he really blinked. I can’t stand the guy.

I think it's funny. Let's be honest, Gruden is the guy in charge there. Mayock is just a figurehead. Still, it's hilarious to see a media guy get hired, especially Mayock. He's nothing special.

To each his own. All the media types get a little old after awhile. Mayock has college connections all around. He should be a big asset come draft day. I imagine he knows area scouts which is where the Rams Snead was valuable in putting together a solid scouting department. I don't see his sources drying up. I see him drafting like the Rams have with Snead and McVay. Committed football guys with smarts. I'll miss his insight.

Mayock has never impressed me. He's not even the most insightful guy on NFLN imo. I feel confident saying that I could draft better than him. But Mayock won't actually be doing the drafting in Oakland, so I guess that doesn't matter anyways.

Disagree FLV. I think he's a young HC, and most of those guys aren't McVay. Even Belichick didn't get er done his first time around.

What Gase will give a team is a HC who locks up the offensive expert and QB dev side of things. Which is extremely valued right now and will be valued this year as teams with young QBs look for guys like him. And IMO the failure in Miami under a weak front office and Tannehill at QB isn't going to hurt him too much. He'll get another shot soon and hopefully he'll have learned from the areas he struggled.

I wonder with Josh McDaniels declining the Colts at the last minute, will teams looking for new head coaches think he'll turn them down at the last minute, too? Hmmmmmm........?
Amazing how short memories are.
When he spurned the Colts, everyone said he’d never get another shot.
Now it’s a year later and he’ll likely get to pick his spot. Classic

One thing you guys might be missing with the zac Taylor interview is that HC interviews aren’t blockable unlike OC/DC interviews. Could very well be a way around that much like LaFleur wth the Titans last year
Doesn’t make a difference.
If offered a lateral job, the Rams could put the kabosh on it

true, but the rams could also have a policy to block interviews during playoffs or something. my point was that it could simply be a way to get an early and guaranteed look at Taylor, and not necessarily be strictly for HC. I cant imagine a team wasting time on a guy they dont have some belief in being a good HC, but considering his lack of experience it would be an odd hire.

point being, I dont expect Taylor to get a HC job this offseason, but i find an OC job to be quite likely

I totally agree with you.
McVay has said he won’t block someone from taking a different opportunity. So it doesn’t matter under what circumstances the interview takes place. Coaches are only allowed to interview during bye week of playoffs.
So the Rams are going to be faced with this year in and out and at some point they (McVay) may have to change their tune.
McVay even said last year after letting Lafleur go that he may have been “too nice” so maybe it will even start this year.
https://theramswire.usatoday.com/20...ns-sean-mcvay-matt-lafleur-titans-regret/amp/
End of the day I think you are right that something should be done, (I don’t know what) to try and minimize these sham interviews for HC when they are clearly just skirting the lateral move issue.
I think it’s easier for a team to decline allowing an interview versus declining a legit opportunity

Plenty of former NFL coaches aren’t drawing interest, yet

As the eight NFL teams — 25 percent of the league — begin searching aggressively for a new coach, there are plenty of former NFL coaches who are available to be interviewed and/or considered. Not many are drawing much interest, yet.

Former Lions and Colts coach Jim Caldwell will get multiple interviews, as will former Colts coach Chuck Pagano. Former Bills head coach (and Browns interim coach) Gregg Williams, former Broncos coach Vance Joseph, former Dolphins coach Adam Gase, and former Packers coach Mike McCarthy will have interviews, too.

Former Raiders and Browns coach Hue Jackson could end up getting hired as the new head coach in Cincinnati. Former Raiders, Broncos, and Washington coach Mike Shanahan could return to Denver, and former Cardinals coach Bruce Arians could become a candidate for the Buccaneers’ job.

For now, though, a long list of former NFL coaches are waiting for the phone to ring. If they’d answer. And plenty would. Here’s a list of guys who are out there. In no particular order.

Jeff Fisher (60): The former Oilers/Titans and Rams coach has a career record of 178-171-1, including a Super Bowl appearance and six postseason berths.

Wade Phillips (71): The former Broncos, Bills, and Cowboys coach went 83-69 with five playoff appearances. He coordinated the Broncos’ championship defense in 2015, and he has spent the last two years running the Rams’ defense.

Steve Spagnuolo (59): The former Rams coach lasted 52 games, winning 11. He’s currently out of football.

Lovie Smith (60): The former Bears and Buccaneers coach went 89-87 in the NFL, taking the Bears to Super Bowl XLI. He has had three disastrous seasons at Illinois, winning nine and losing 27.

Jim Mora (57): The former Falcons and Seahawks coach has a 32-34 record in the NFL, and a 46-30 record at UCLA. He took the Falcons to the NFC title game in 2004.

Mike Mularkey (57): The former Bills, Jaguars, and Titans coach has a career record of 37-54. He took the Titans to the final eight last year.

Jim Schwartz (52): The former Lions head coach generated a 29-52 record in Detroit, taking over after the 0-16 disaster of 2008. He led the Lions to a playoff berth, and he has coordinated the Philadelphia defense for the last three seasons.

Rex Ryan (56): The former Jets and Bills coach has a 65-68 career record; he’s 4-2 in the postseason with a pair of AFC title game appearances.

Mike Pettine (52): The Packers defensive coordinator was 10-22 in two seasons as Browns coach.

Rob Chudzinski (50): The one-and-done Browns coach won four of 16 games in his only season.

Joe Philbin (57): The Packers interim head coach was 26-30 in three-plus seasons with the Dolphins.

Gus Bradley (52): The former Jaguars coach, now the Chargers defensive coordinator, went 14-48 in nearly four seasons in Jacksonville.

Ken Whisenhunt (56): The former Cardinals and Titans coach has a career record of 52-73, including two playoff berths and a Super Bowl appearance. He’s now the Chargers offensive coordinator.

Ben McAdoo (41): The former Giants coach took the team to the playoffs in his first year, but he was fired late in his second season. He went 13-16.

Jack Del Rio (55): The former Jaguars and Raiders coach went 94-97 with three playoff appearances.

Brad Childress (62): The former Vikings coach, 40-37 during his time in Minnesota, was fired during the 2010 season and never seriously considered for another head-coaching job in the NFL. He had two playoff appearances and a berth in the 2009 NFC title game. He’s currently the coach of the AAF’s Atlanta Legends.

Leslie Frazier (59): The former Vikings coach went 21-33-1, with one playoff berth. He currently serves as the Bills defensive coordinator.

Dirk Koetter (59): The former Bucs coach was fired after completing his third season, winning 19 of 48 games.

Todd Haley (51): The former Chiefs coach went 19-27 in nearly three seasons, with one playoff berth. He served as the Steelers offensive coordinator for six seasons before joining the Browns in that same capacity, getting fired early in his first season.

Rod Marinelli (69): The former Lions coach had a record of 10-38, including 0-16 in 2008. He currently serves as the Cowboys defensive coordinator, and he never has been linked to another head-coaching job.

Marc Trestman (62): He went 13-19 in two years with the Bears; he was fired by the Toronto Argonauts a year after winning the Grey Cup.

Greg Schiano (52): The former Buccaneers coach went 11-21 in two seasons. He currently serves as the defensive coordinator at Ohio State.

Eric Mangini (47): The former Jets and Browns coach went 33-48 in the NFL. He has been out of coaching since 2015, after a three-year stint with the 49ers as an assistant.

Jim Tomsula (50): The former 49ers coach had one full year on the job, going 5-11. He’s the defensive line coach in Washington.

Chip Kelly (55): The former Eagles and 49ers coach won 28 and lost 35, with one playoff appearance.

John Fox (63): Fox, now an ESPN analyst, racked up a record of 141-130 with the Panthers, Broncos, and Bears, making it to seven postseasons, with two Super Bowls.

Mike McCoy (46): The former Chargers coach went 28-38 with a playoff berth.

Norv Turner (66): The former Washington, Raiders, and Chargers coach went 118-126-1, with four playoff berths.

Tom Cable (54): The former Raiders coach went 17-27. After seven years as the offensive line coach in Seattle, he was fired. In 2018, Cable returned to Oakland in that same role.

Mike Smith (59): The former Falcons coach went 67-50 with four playoff appearances and an NFC title game loss. He was fired during the 2018 season as defensive coordinator in Tampa.

Dennis Allen (46): The former Raiders coach went 8-28. He has served as the Saints defensive coordinator since 2015.

Herm Edwards (64): The former Jets and Chiefs coach went 56-78 with four playoff appearances. He left broadcasting to become the head coach at Arizona State in 2018.

Anyone who hires Jeff Fisher is an idiot
--------------
When looking down that list the biggest thing that jumps out is how not-awful Jeff Fisher looks compared to the others.

Regardless, don’t do it.
------------
The way the Rams defense plays, Wade Phillips isn’t getting another job. Not surprising with those 2 mouthy starting corners.
-------------
Wade Phillips is the only one I’d hire and should be hired. In fact, Elway should have hired Phillips instead of Vance.
-------------
Hue Jackson as next Bengals coach stuff is outright trolling of Bengals fans. Cruel and unusual.
-------------
Jeff Fisher should not even be on that list.

He will never be hired as a head coach again.
--------------
Jeff Fisher ..lol.
-------------
“In no particular order”. Jeff Fisher

That’s pretty funny
------------
There are 8 guys on that list who would make good coordinators. Only one I would trust as a head coach is Wade.
-------------
I remember watching Toy Story 2 or 3 with my son. There were a bunch of misfit older toys nobody wanted. That’s this list minus maybe Dennis Allen. And if Jeff Fisher ever gets another NFL job, as a Saints fan, hope it’s in the NFC south.
-------------
Fisher really isn’t as bad a coach as everyone likes to make him out to be, he just shouldn’t have personnel decisions.
-------------
Don’t forget..Charlie Weiss & Romeo Crennel
-------------
After the turn around in LA and the success of Keemun, Foles, and Goff under different coaches, I can’t see why anyone would give Jeff Fisher a job
-----------
The QB whisperer, Goff is a bust, Keenum is unusable, Foles oh hell no
and the truth is what could Vince Young really have been.
Just NO
-------------
Jeff Fisher should never be allowed to watch another NFL game, let alone coach a team.
-------------
Someone actually paid Fisher to be a head coach for over 20 years?!

Personally, I think there ought to be a law that prohibits Jim Bob Cooter from coaching outside of any state that was not part of the confederacy. And I also think Saban should fire Alabama's OC - even if it's not warranted - and hire Jim Bob Cooter ... because Alabama and Jim Bob Cooter? C'mon, that has to happen.

If I'm a GM with a QB who is established, Pettine would be on my short list for interviews. Obviously no defensive type is an option if you have to draft a QB or have a young one in place, not in this current league where you can't hold onto offensive expertise.

Dude has an epic name lmao. Yeah he'd fit well in Bama, would get some nice run game seasoning under Saban. But I also think McVay is a little bit short on offensive staff expertise and is probably going to lose his QB coach again, so IMO he'll be looking to bring in some talent.

If he did come to LA, maybe they could do a reality-show updated version of The Beverly Hillbillies ...

Ranking the 2018 coaching vacancies
Posted by Mike Florio

No. 8: The Bengals

The organization known for being extremely careful with money has had a sense of malaise descend on it over the past few seasons, with multiple non-playoff efforts coming after a string of five straight one-and-done postseason appearances. Owner Mike Brown seems to be intent on hiring someone whom he knows, which narrows the universe of potential coaches considerably.

The team also has the lowest budget for a coach, or close to it. Key players like A.J. Green are aging and due for new contracts sooner than later. The quarterback is a middle-of-the-pack guy at best. Apathy looms. And their Ohio rivals are poised to take over the division.

No. 7: The Dolphins

An owner who once was asked to comment on Stephen Ross living in New York and owning a team in Miami said, “I love competing against him.” And that continues to be one of the biggest impediments to the Dolphins becoming as good as they can be. Ross, an absentee landlord, isn’t sufficiently engaged in the team, deferring to others.

As of Monday, the primary person to whom Ross defers (until he doesn’t) will be G.M. Chris Grier, with coach Adam Gase fired and V.P. of football operations reassigned to a non-football job. With the Jets and Bills having their quarterbacks of the future, the Dolphins need to figure out that position first, and then most of the others.

No. 6: The Cardinals

The Cardinals could be mired in the basement of the NFC West for a while, and the new coach could find himself reporting to a new G.M. as soon as 2020 — a new G.M. who may want to hire his own coach ASAP. With plenty of holes on the roster and highly competitive rivals in L.A., Arizona, and Seattle, it’s no surprise Eric Bieniemy passed on sitting for an interview.

No. 5: The Broncos

After consecutive losing seasons for the first time since 1971-72, expectations should be low in Denver. Which is good. But the organization is mired in dysfunction, due in large part to an intra-family Willie Wonka competition gone bad, and a former franchise quarterback whose work as the leader of the franchise has left something to be desired in recent years.

With the Chiefs poised to dominate the division for years thanks to the presence of Patrick Mahomes, with the Chargers not far behind, and with the Raiders possibly ready to turn it around, the next coach in Denver could be another short-term coach in Denver.

No. 4: The Buccaneers

It’s hardly ideal to take a coaching job and to not have the ability to pick a quarterback, given the team’s decision to stick with Jamies Winston for at least another year. But the Bucs could do a lot worse at the most important position on the field; with the right coach (Dirk Koetter apparently wasn’t it), Winston could still become a franchise quarterback.

And if 2019 proves that Winston isn’t the guy, it becomes basically a scholarship year for the new coach. Regardless, expectations for the team are low, the rest of the NFC South is in transition or close to it, and the door is open for the Bucs to become something they haven’t been in a long time — a true contender.

No. 3: The Jets

Sam Darnold had a strong late-season push, making him a viable candidate to become a short-list franchise quarterback. With Tom Brady inevitably retiring, the Jets could fill the looming power vacuum in the AFC East. But it’s a tough market and the roster has plenty of holes. The question is whether the next coach will get enough time to turn it around.

No. 2: The Packers

No traditional owner. A commitment to patience. A G.M. who gets it. A plan to spend in free agency. A rabid and loyal fan base. History, tradition, etc. The only wildcard is whether Aaron Rodgers will be on board with the hire, and what he may say or do if he isn’t.

No. 1: The Browns

There’s a sizable gap between No. 1 and the rest. This could be the most attractive opening of the past decade, if not longer. And the presence of Baker Mayfield, plus the absence of any real accomplishments since the franchise rejoined the NFL in 1999, makes it a must-have job.

Throw in a talented nucleus of young players and plenty of cap space, and the job gets even better. The only drawbacks are that expectations actually may be higher than desirable for 2019, and the potential for meddling by ownership.

Send your resume to the Rams office @jrry32 You can list me as a reference. After you banging the table for Kupp and Kittle, I trust your scouting eyes.
