Reading Lions fans they’re not excited about the pick but they don’t know him. Seems like they’d have preferred a retread instead of a bright young mind.

Huge loss. The Rams have been great in the draft and he's a big reason why. Compensation picks are great! And sounds like even more covid be on the way if others get poached. But for the picks to amount to anything, we'll need capable replacements lined up. The picks do come at the right time, as we have no 1st rounder.

Happy for anyone that gets a chance at a better gig that they've worked so hard for.

It feels great that teams are so frequently looking to poach our talent now, even if it hurts losing qualified people. Times sure have changed...

Agreed on everything here. Such is the carousel of the NFL when you’re consistently solid every season.

Times have definitely changed. It’s a beautiful thing though and I’m relishing every moment we are in right now. Would have liked another division title, but a conference championship will do... and then, finishing in the Super Bowl.

I understand the concern with losing a talent in the draft evaluation room. But let’s be honest, we’ve had plenty of stinkers and questionable picks up & down the draft over the years. It’s not like we’ve hit on every single pick and this guy was the sole reason for such.

I’m happy for him and proud of the Rams organization. Now we have an opportunity for another voice to step up and show their mettle/talent. Might be even better - who knows.

Either way, the draft picks are an awesome and needed parting gift to us.

Catch 22. Yeah we will keep losing good people but they theoretically should be replaced with cream of the crop candidates since we are looked at with such reverence.

Rams lose Director of College Scouting to Lions’ GM job
That should mean two third round picks

The Detroit Lions are expected to hire Brad Holmes, currently the director of college scouting for the LA Rams, to be their next general manager, agreeing to terms on a five-year deal on Thursday according to multiple sources. The move means that the Rams will receive two third round compensatory picks — picks that will be added at the end of the third round — because the Lions hired a minority candidate out of their organization.

It was previously reported that the Lions couldn’t announce Holmes as GM until the Rams were finished with the postseason but it appears that Detroit may do so if LA approves it. In either case, it seems as though Holmes is headed to the Lions eventually.

CORRECTION: I've now been told teams CAN announce GM hiring (not a coach) if his old team approves of it. There you go.
Hypothetically, Saints could give permission for Falcons to offer GM job to Terry Fontenot now but he is pro personnel guy and so is more involved in playoffs https://t.co/M43q0X4MIU

Holmes was previously the director of college scouting for the Los Angeles Rams, which is the organization he’s known for the last 18 years. Because of a rule that was approved in November to reward teams for hiring minority candidates out of other organizations, the Rams are expected to receive two third round compensatory picks.

Lions expected to hire Los Angeles Rams' director of college scouting Brad Holmes as their new general manager, per source. They are finalizing a multi-year deal.

Holmes had also interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons, but it was reported on Thursday that they are expected to hire Terry Fontenot as their next GM, leaving Holmes available to the Lions.
Here’s some of what was written about Holmes in our previous reports.
Holmes started as a public relations intern in 2003 and the following year he became a scouting assistant in 2004. Holmes worked his way up the ranks – as a national combine scout, area scout and national scout before becoming the director of college scouting in 2013.
The Lions have not interviewed or requested an interview with Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley yet, but with Holmes as the new GM, that could happen soon. Jason LaCanfora says that Staley would bring in Anthony Weaver, Jonathan Gannon and Jay Rodgers as assistants.

Brandon Staley, who has met w/Jets and Chargers (and possibly Lions to come) would bring a very strong staff of rising coaches, I'm told, including Texans DC Anthony Weaver, Colts DB coach Jonathan Gannon (great work with that secondary) and Bears DL coach Jay Rodgers (former QB)

It was also reported on Thursday by Michael Lombardi that the Jacksonville Jaguars could hire Ray Farmer out of the Rams’ organization to be their next GM. Farmer is also a minority candidate, which I assume would mean two more third round picks.

Name to watch in Jacksonville for GM is Ray Farmer.

I'd like to see the Rams move up and get Scary Terry Tamorrion, raw but with awesome deep threat talent. With Goff as our QB, who i have always thot highly of, give him some talent to work with

To be fair, if I was a Lions fan I would just assume every move the Lions make is the wrong one by default.

The few I've talked to more have admitted exactly that. I told them I know the pains of that having been a Rams fan for 40 years and just coming out of the Linehan Spagnola and Fisher run of coaches.

Yeah when you're talking about scouts and GMs we as fans don't really see enough to know who's good and who's not. At least with coaches we're offering opinions about the players we see on the field. We have something to go on.

I'm happy for the guy. I think it's crazy that there's only 3 black GMs too though I also don't like this rule I don't think AA type approach is the way to go but that's a conversation for another time and place. Bottom line is we can sure use that round 3 pick and it's nice to have it, and it's also nice to have a GM in that division who is tight with our front office.

I wish Mr. Holmes the best. Great way to get more black GMs hired is to go kick some serious ass so hope that happens. (y)

Actually I read if you lose two in the same year it is only one more additional 3rd... So three 3rd rounders total, one per year.

Bogus!

For the Ray Farmer discussion, I think we should get any player we want off their roster. But with the Jags, it's a tough call. The 3rd rounder would have better :)
