Brady is under contract for 2 more years at $14m/year ($22m cap hit), is currently the frontrunner in the MVP race, and Garoppolo is a UFA at the end of the year who will probably make more money than Brady on the open market.

Aw hell, I present unto thee...delusional Patriot fan

C’mon Dewey! If The Weasley cheating Belibitch actually believied in JG he wouldn’t let him go

Brady ain’t winning mvp, will be history within two years...count on it

Not impressed. Who knows how he will do. The Rams control their destiny this year. That is all I know.

What a deal for the 49ers. Garoppolo is going to be a stud. As a Rams fan hate this trade. SF just got a lot better with this move

or is this just the next Matt Cassel to the Chiefs, move, where the Patriots fleece a needy team?(insert Garoppolo and 49ers as necessary)

So the Pats have a 40 year old QB and have traded away both of their viable backups this season. Who's their backup incase the oldman goes down?
lol..shows how much they truly valued Garoppolo

First thing that came to mind. Makes me think that Bill feels it is sink or swim with Brady. What does that say about Garapolo, Belichick and the playoffs?? Does Bill think Garapolo can't take them far in the playoffs if needed? Does he think they won't make it to the playoffs? Have they one so many playoffs that a second round pick far outweighs having insurance, going into the playoffs?

I'd imagine they sign him this year and not wait. Just makes too much sense to not do it now. Though I guess if they don't that tells us a lot about Lynch.

They have about half a season to figure out if they want to. I think Garapolo has as much potential as any of the QBs in this coming draft. He has a very quick release and has an insanely fast synapse. It remains to be seen if he can put it all to good use.

Clearly the Pats are making room to sign Kaepernick

Actually that would be the perfect Belichickian move.

Garapalo played 4 games on a really good team. I never believe in back ups who look good in a short spurt and then the team trades them. It very rarely works out. Also if donal and USC didn't flame out. I don't think this trade ever happens. This looks kind of desperate to me.

All they could do is look at the tape. College and four pro games. So, they must have seen enough to think he has as much or more potential than any rookie in the draft.

So thoughts on them making this move now? Does that mean they didn't want or think they could nab Cousins or they simply value JG more?
Do they not value any QB's in the up coming draft.
Technically J G is still an unknown commodity, why pay him more then a first round pick?

He is way ahead of the learning curve of any rookie. This could be a great move, because they still could draft a rookie and develop him behind Garapolo. If they arent happy with Jimmy G then they could replace him with the rookie in a year or two. This falls back to their fan poll about winning. They wanted to see if the fans were up for a rebuild at QB, or should they make this move, without saying it. Jimmy G should get them some wins.

Don’t care what the Patriots believe. I believe he is going to be and is a great player.

Now c’mon man, that last post was crap.

I think he has good potential and wanted the Rams to take him in the draft
. I like him better than Mannion.

Brady is 40, if the Patriots believed in JG, then that doesn’t make sense

They couldn't pay them both. But if Garapolo left in free agency, they at least could have gotten a third round comp pick.

This makes me think that New England wants to move up in the draft. The 2018 draft has a bunch of first round DTs that are very good. The Patriots need a DT like now. Christian Wilkins is a very versatile tackle. He looks to be a future All-Pro.

Again they can't afford them both.

Let me get this right....

Tom Brady is approaching 50. The Patriots drafted Garoppolo in the second round to learn from and take the reigns from Brady. 3 1/2 years later, they get rid of him.

Kinda tells me, the Pats didn’t want him. If they deemed him worthy of being a franchise-esque QB, they would have kept him.

They’ve had 3+ years to watch and evaluate him and they just said, ‘No thanks, we’ll try to find Brady’s replacement next year...thanks for the high second round pick San Fran.’

I’m not worried.

I guess thats one way to look at it...

another (and more likely correct) way to look at it is Brady plans to continue playing after this season and Jimmy is a FA, so its either pay for 2 starting QBs and ruin your cap/roster or choose between Brady and Jimmy and I think we all know who would win that. which would mean Jimmy walks for free (comp pick excluded)

or...Brady is seemingly defying father-time by better living through chemistry, and they believe he will never be caught...PASS THE ADDERALL!

Seems to me that this idea that there are backup QB's sitting on NFL benches that are really good are unicorns.

SF has picks to burn. IMO this is about seeing what JG has until they draft another QB next year. Insurance.

NE doesn't need JG and they certainly don't want to pay him.

If Belicheat believed in this guy... believed he was a true franchise QB... he never would have traded him period.

He just cheated the whiners out of a high pick.

WOW - a bit of a surprise tbh, I thought Jimmy G was going to be the heir apparent in New England, obviously the crown didn't quite fit. With Brady celebrating his 60th year in the league next year, are they really going to be drafting a QB high next year or is there someone that's on their radar that's currently kicking around the NFL, or the outskirts?

Like others, I don't believe that they were totally sold on Jimmy G, otherwise they would never part ways with him.

Great questions. Personally I think they messed this up in the off-season. Should of taken the 2 first rounders from Cleveland. Brady must be sticking around for a while because they were committed to working out a deal next year to keep him.

Bill the GM has had a brutal offseason coming into this year and this looks like another bad move to go with the 5 or 6 bad moves they have made this calendar year.

.

So they used a 2nd rounder to get jg and now get a 2nd rounder for him. I wonder what a high 2nd round pick 4 years later is worth compared to the original 2nd round pick. At least they got 2 games out of him.

.

We don't know what Garappolo is worth at this point, the Pats are always a bad team to judge what players are really worth.

What we know though is that if Brady gets hurt, the Pats are in major trouble for this season.

considering the amount of times Brady has been sacked this year (21 T-4TH) I am surprised at this.

Tells me the Pats will be making another move today

Not really. Peter King was local radio this morning. Said Pats tried to work a long term deal with Garapolo back in the Spring, he was not interested, he wants to play. Can't blame him since who knows how long Brady will want to play. So they had no choice but to deal him at some point.

So he was insurance for 1/2 the season, now they deal him and hope Brady stays healthy.
