I think JRey is our deep threat receiver still and Van is our other Kupp type. This was more of a Cooks replacement not so much deep threat. But still good addition.

Worst thing about the draft too is that maybe the Jets hit the lottery on Mims thanks to the Rams. Wouldn't be the first time a fallback option goes on to a great career and saved you from yourself.

Look at Fish and his reported mini-tantrum after Blackmon went off the board. But boy howdy did those Jags throw us an assist with that one. :ROFLMAO:

the rams wr corps never had a chance with that draft. it was gonna be blackmon or quick.

Replacement for Woods maybe? I don't want to see Woods or Kupp go but its inevitable.

Well odds are one of Reynolds, Woods, Kupp is gone next year. I was a bit surprised we did not go with a vertical threat since McVay has chased that attribute previously with Cooks and Watkins. McVay always says Reynolds is a deep threat so it does make you wonder who is odd man out in 2021.

Remember ... as of right now, we don't have Thomas, Natson or Cooks on the team. that is 3 spots that need to be filled and next yr we are most likely going to lose Reynolds after we pay Ramsey and Kupp. that is why we are seeing the WR's being brought in this yr. There IS a need

Possibly, or the offense might be changing. Cooks' deep threat ability was pretty much non existent last season because the OL couldn't hold up long enough. We switched to roll outs and more underneath routes and Cooks ran a lot of slants. One thing that pops up in Jeffersons highlights is the slant route. Woods will still be under contract next year and its an easy decision between Kupp and Reynolds.

I'm telling you guys Jefferson is Kupp v.2. He's about as polished as you can get for a rookie. He will play this year replacing Cooks. Yeah, he's that good. You don't find guys like him too often. For Snead to have grabbed Kupp and now Jefferson they are going to be a nightmare for DB's. You play zone with Kupp and Jefferson they will eat your lunch. Teams passed over him because of his average 40 times. LOL These so-called professionals don't seem to realize that a guy with 4.3 speed, but cannot run routes is easy to cover ( I am not talking about Cooks who is the exception not the rule) compared to Kupp and Jefferson. These guys get separation from their route running and that is far more consistent and they can then get separation at all levels but are especially deadly in the short to medium ranges. Can't get vertical? There's a vid out there showing him making a very good jump catch with good coverage.

I will take a WR with his agility and route running over a WR who runs 4.3 but can't run good routes, every time. If Reynolds goes back to the bench it's okay with me. Even the coaches have seen that he had his opportunities and really didn't impress. Drops and a consistent struggle to get open is why they needed to get someone else. They felt good about their opportunity to get Jefferson so it allowed them to trade him to Houston. That's the pick they used to get Jefferson. So they basically traded Cooks for Jefferson. A great trade when you factor in Cooks injuries. With Jefferson and Kupp working the short to mid ranges that will allow Woods to get over the top.

This is a lot about scheme fit. If they move to a power run attack and now with a bunch of possession receivers this is all set up for a ball-control offensive scheme. They have evolved from a quick-strike team to a ball-control offense IMO.

Great post, totally agree but as to your statement above, I think it's just evolving into being a more multiple offense, giving McVay more ways to adapt and exploit defenses.
I don't believe McVay is obsessed with pushing his 11 personnel offense like some people think.
I think he wants it to be a complete offense, capable of changing its stripes week to week, half to half, series to series. In Washington he made his name with the TEs. In LA it's been the 3WRs, because that is what was the most effective and it gave a basically rookie Goff the best options to find an open target who can make the catches and bail out the QB on the slightly behind or off target throws. None of McVays other skill position players could give that security to Goff. I think it was a brilliant choice made to develop our young QB. I have never believed McVay is espescially married to the 11personnel as his full time bread and butter. The very 1st pick made for his Rams was a TE. That's very telling imo.

I think McVay took his medicine against the Patriots. Super young HC had no option but to stick with what got him there, his young offensive squad and staff simply didn't have the experience or the right horses to adapt to what NE was doing, change their identity and be good enough at it to win.
McVay attended Professor Belichick's masterclass in opponent scheme adaptability and I believe that is what Snead is trying to help him build on this roster. I also think it is part of the equation to the changes on the staff.

Jmso as always

I realize it's splitting hairs here but Keenan Allen was offered up by someone in the other thread, forget who, as a comp and I think it's the most accurate I've heard.

Jefferson has that same "glide" to him that Allen has, and a similar build. Also Van is similar in how slippery he is with the hand combat. He's very quick to fight off the DB's hands which is going to help him a lot at this level.

But either way I agree with you that he's a fantastic fit. I'm really excited to see this guy instantly settle in as a key receiving option for us. Kupp/Woody/Jefferson isn't as sexy as Cooks/Kupp/Woody but when we play good defenses it is going to be more effective IMO.

Also I think too much is being made of "deep threat" here. Woody has beaten defenses deep in this scheme. Kupp can too. Hell I've see Higs get past the safeties.

Jefferson has enough raw speed to beat teams deep. DBs are going to have to be ON HIM if they want to shut him down, and they're just a double move away from trailing him and praying their safety is there.

I sort of feel bad for Reynolds here. But it is what it is. He's about to have his ass kicked and his fledgling job taken.

Yea after watching several Van videos I’m pretty excited about the pick.

He has the makings of an ideal possession WR with his ability to constantly create separation with his route running and understanding of leverage, his strong hands and ability to hold onto the Ball in traffic. The only thing is he is a little on the lean side for a possession guy. But with today’s NFL rules that seems less important.

I totally get the Kupp Comparisons. Such a great fit for Goff’s skill set as well. A precision pocket passer like Goff can really feast with these types.
The Lamar Jackson, Russell Wilson, Deshaun Watson’s of the world don’t get a lot better with these precision route runner types as much as a Goff would.

Cook has a few patent routes he ran but Jefferson shows so much more with the back shoulder throw, the slants and some of the nasty whip routes and digs. His ability to change up his look and momentum per route really shows some advanced route running that some WRs never get to.

Jefferson will be a great red zone target as well with his hands, length and quick savvy.

I read one scout say Jefferson has a low ceiling due to his limited athletic ability but he has a very high floor and is dang near fully developed as a
WR at 24.

Well this is JRey's shot. But he's got a real threat coming in with this class. Jefferson is about to take his fuckin lunch money IMO.
I dont think so hes another intermediate pass catcher... jrey is going to get more opportunities.... mcvay says he cannplay outside but i dont see it.... i see him as more of insurance for woods or kupp and dont think one of them will be here next year

Go from quick strike to a boring ass offense .....should have gotten a speed receiver
