Brandin Cooks got his contract 4 days after we acquired him. He hadn't even touched a football with us, which was extremely stupid.

Gurley was signed bc him and Bell were supposed to get around the same time. Signing Gurley before Bell meant they had more leverage in what he could get before the Steelers broke the bank on Bell.

Same scenario happened with Goff. Both Mahomes and Watson were about to need contracts. If they get those contracts before Goff, that means we need to spend more money that we didnt have to keep him.

Cooks was and is the only deal I never understood bc he got a deal so fast. The others looked like they could have worked out. I'm sure McVay thought he could have gotten a little longer with Gurley and Cooks before the troubles started popping up. Just look at some of the posts when the Gurley rumors started popping up. We all thought the issue was overblown and he would come back and prove the media wrong. Except we were wrong.

First off let me say one thing. I have no problem with Matt Stafford I think he's a fine QB he's not in my top 10 and I don't know that he makes us a contender by himself with our other issues. He's my favorite baseball players best friend and I hope he wins for us. I don't care that Jared Goff is on the Lions now I don't and won't root for him or them I'm a Rams fan. The line I use for every free agent still holds true. I wish them nothing but the best and hope they succeed unless they're playing us.

My problem is this is the second time the media has said we've gone all in on a closing window. The first was when McVay took over the team and we had a QB and RB on rookie deals. They went hog wild in free agency and the trade market and brought in a bunch of big names. This round of pushing all the chips to the middle of the table ended with a SB loss that's fine it happens. Lesson learned?

We followed that disappointing loss and performance by McVay's offense by signing Todd Gurley and Brandin Cooks to long term big money deals and continued to wheel and deal and bring in more big name trades/free agents. People say you can't predict Gurleys knee going the way it did but his knee issues were nothing new he had them in college. We signed him before his rookie deal was up and he never played a down on his high priced extension. Lesson learned?

Brandin Cooks came to the Rams as a big play WR capable of taking the top off the defense and expanding the Rams offense. He succeeded at that role and we were a better team with him in it. He also came to us with concussion issues but we sent a 1st round pick to the Pats of all teams to get him knowing he was a good player but also knowing concussions were a major issue. We did this time at least get one year out of the big extension before sending the player and a $36 million dead cap hit that cost us a 1st rounder to the Texans for a 2nd round pick and a 4th rounder in 2022. Lesson learned?

Then a full year before his rookie deal was up we signed Jared Goff to a monster contract which again the player never played a down for us under that new contract. McVay again responsible for an extension before it's needed on a player he couldn't make work in the offense only to bail on the player. This time sending away picks because the contract was deemed so bad that we had to give the Lions our QB and 2 future first round draft picks plus a 3rd rounder this year.

McVay and Snead have done wonders to rebuild the Rams from the years of futility after the GSOT. But as a fan of this team for 40+ years I don't want him ever to resign another player on offense especially as early as he did with Jared.

Had they not given Gurley and Cooks those big contracts maybe Roger Saffold is still in Horns and our OLine is much better. Maybe Greg Zeurlein is sill a Ram even though eventually we got Rudy Gay who seems like a good kicker. Maybe we're able to afford a few nice free agents to make the team better.

Had they waited until the end of the 2019 season we could have ridden Jared on his 5th year option and it would have saved us money this past season and beyond. It also would have cost us less to trade for Stafford since we didn't have to pay the Lions to take on that contract. Hell maybe we're able to trade for him before this season and it cost us a lot less.

I love the Rams as much as anybody around here but these continued swings and misses with signing our own offensive players, McVay's expertise and his side of the ball is where these problems happen, is really alarming. This is the 2nd time they've gone all in for a SB win instead of built up a solid team around pieces. Hope this run ends better than the last one and hold your breath if we sign any offensive player to an extension.
You've blasted any and every poster that went against the Rams.

So Stop crying.

And BTW I agree with you. Trade for Goff BS, trade for Watkins B.S., trade for Cooks BS,trade for Stafford BS.

And on it goes, can't draft can't keep under the cap. Snead imho needs to go

The media keeps saying we're going all in, but we were the youngest team in the NFC last year.

They just can't handle that a team would use first round picks this way. And if you look back at the drafts we've had, most have turned out pretty well even without the first rounder.

This is a sentiment expressed by a lot of people on this forum that are very happy with this trade. That our window with prime AD and Ramsey is only a couple of years. It's not just a media thought it's a Rams fans though as well.

ADs window is a sentiment shared by me too - to upgrade the QB position so that we can get AD a ring.

But that's not going all in. Next year we won't have a first round pick, but we will likely have four picks on day 2, which has been a great day for us. And we're still a young team.

We have a very solid pipeline of up and coming players, and it's being kept up by the comp picks that we will continue to get every year.

Once AD and Stafford are done, it'll hurt - but if Goff wasn't the guy, then it was still going to hurt. People way overvalue first round picks, especially with how successful we've been drafting without them

People like to treat these first round picks as if they are gold. The fact is the draft is a crap shoot and many of them flop. Anyone remember Greg Robinson?
Yeah they are shit. That’s why Detroit wanted two of them.

Detroit wanted two of them because they had to take on Goff's god awful contract.
Whether they hit on either of the two remains to be seen but @Ramstien isn't wrong. Snead didn't value them as highly as some posters on here do.

First round picks are extremely valuable because Snead uses them to acquire pro bowl talent. Cannot trade for Stafford with a handful of 3rd round comp picks.

That's with the benefit of hindsight...

And we're lucky to have Stafford as an alternative.

Look where the Cowboys are. They're on the outside looking in and by waiting, if they want to retain Prescott, it'll likely cost them between Mahomes and Watson money.

Ultimately, with the benefit of hindsight, we should have done what Dallas did and they should have done what we did with respect to the QB and RB contracts...

But honestly, Dallas is in a worse position than we are... and that's largely due to the divine providence that made Stafford available at exactly the time the Rams wanted desperately to move on from Goff.

I shudder at the next two years with Goff benched and Wolford as our starter as much as I like both of them.

So, in those moments when I doubt... I remember that sometimes the alternatives don't work out, either...

Like I've said elsewhere too. Imagine what we could have added to the roster with $30 million spent on people to contribute to the 2020 or 2021 team. That's 3 Floyds or Brockers or hey Stephon Diggs made $11.6 million last year he'd have been nice along with Kupp and Woods wouldn't he. Again nobody can deny they built a good team but what if...

Well those guys kind of earned it, no? TG had 2014, 2017, and an amazing 2018 AFTER signing the contract before the wheels fell off.

Brandin started and played in all 16 games until sine 2015 in his second year. 1000 yard receiving seasons every year except 2019 and his rookie season.

Then a full year before his rookie deal was up we signed Jared Goff to a monster contract which again the player never played a down for us under that new contract. On the other hand, if they hadn't had paid him, the notion may have been what Dak and Jerruh are doing right now. Recently we've seen the "pay the man" concept, and if a team doesn't they are considered cheap. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I mean shit happens. They can't predict future injuries. Yeah it sucks it happened to 3 big time players in a row but they just gotta take their lumps and realize their mistakes and rectify them as quickly as possible.

What about Aaron Donald? What about Jalen Ramsey? What about Torry Holt? What about Steven Jackson, Marshall Faulk, and Eric Dickerson?

Those are exceptions. With the exception of SJack and AD all of those guys were top 5 picks.

The team very likely will pick in the mid to late 20s barring a complete catastrophe. In which point its as hit or miss as any other round.

.

I had no problem with any of the contracts the Rams gave those players.

The Gurley and cooks contracts were only bad because they got injured. Shit happens. Gurley earned that contract and I'm happy the Rams pay players that earn it.

We all know why they paid Goff early and it was a good plan. None of us saw Goff not moving forward like we all thought he would. I don't know what happened with Goff and it clearly surprised the Rams. It is what it is. Maybe if Allen and Blythe weren't the centres it would have ended differently. I dunno.

Goff earned his in 2018 as well didn't he and what happened after that? My point was they signed each of them a year or more before their current contract was done.

But they knew about the injuries to Cooks and Gurley before the contracts were done.

I am not going to excuse the Horns brass for the megabuck contracts that did not work out. However, it is not all on their shoulders either! When the FO gives an AD99, a Jalen Ramsey, or a Jared Goff a huge contract, they are expressing trust & confidence that these young men will live up to their massive deals. Aaron and Jalen appear to be doing just that.

What the hell happened to Jared? What happened to the Golden Boy who sought out a QB skills trainer after his horrid rookie season? He appeared to continue working towards improvement up to the end of the 2018 season. Then all of a sudden, his fundamentals started to decay. What happened to the "Peyton Manning feet" that Toni Romo raved about during the 2018 campaign where Jared was constantly dancing to adjust his feet to stay on balance for accurate laser beam tosses? Yes, an injury-depleted 2019 OL wreaked havoc to certain extent, but why did those finesse feet adjustments appear to go mostly away?

Working for a megabuck payday only to backslide after getting paid is a team-killing attitude and relays the wrong message to other talented overachievers working hard towards their huge payday dreams.
