Who won the trade?

I was just curious as to what the general feel is for Lions fans this season. The first topic in the forum was the debate over who won the Stafford/Goff trade. One argument in favor of the Lions winning the trade is that we are no longer a playoff team and they are. And they have a good young team helped by Goff and the picks.

One argument in favor of the Rams winning the trade is the Superbowl championship. That is what everyone strives for. Detroit has yet to achieve that. Some are of the opinion Goff doesn't win that Superbowl. Maybe not even get there. Stafford led them from ten points down in the 4th quarter against the 49ers. Made a big throw to beat the Bucs. And a clutch drive at the end of the Superbowl.

My opinion? That trade is still yet to be determined. Detroit has a good young team now. But if you base it on the two years following the trade the Rams won it easily. A championship cements that.

If Detroit wins a Superbowl with Goff and the young talent they acquired with the trade, I'd say Detroit won the trade if they stay competitive for several years. Only time will tell. We did not stay competitive right after the Superbowl win.

Long term the Lions are better off for doing the trade. Stafford will be retired and Goff will still be a solid starter.
Short term the Rams won the trade. We don't win it all with Goff as our QB.
So both teams won.

Both teams got what they wanted. The Rams were all in to win now with Stafford. Holmes needed a franchise QB to build his team around and he got a good one in Goff. Both teams had different agendas and both teams succeeded. All the picks they got from LA were key in turning around the level of talent in Detroit.

Both teams won. Stafford will probably end up playing 4 years in LA. Goff could have a much longer career in Detroit. Stafford allows the Rams to potentially win their division and Goff gives the Lions the same potential in their division. You could say Stafford is the best QB in the NFCW and Goff is likewise in his division. It would be wild if the Rams and Lions face off in SoFi for the Championship game.

Lions wanted a bridge QB and first round picks so they could add some foundational pieces. That's what they have.

This was just a trade where both teams had something the other side could benefit from.

A Super Bowl Championship trumps everything. I want the Lions to win, because why not? But the fact is your team not only has to be good, but also needs to have things fall their way. Just having a good team, guarantees nothing. Like I tell Niner fans when they say we were lucky to beat them in the NFCCG after being swept in the regular season. No one will remember that outside of Niner homers, while the rest of the World will look to 2021 to find the Rams raising the Lombardi. Immortalized forever in pictures.

The trade was needed by both teams. I have been contending that Goff needed a kick in the ass and got it. He became too complacent in LA. The Lions couldn't improve enough with Stafford alone. They needed more assets.
