In the end, it’s not going to matter though. The chance the Rams get a better QB than Stafford is remote at best. Stafford no doubt knows that. He’s a professional and not of the Aaron Rogers line. He would no doubt want his team to be able to keep going if he were to be injured and even more so if he decides to retire. The Rams are extremely unlikely to replace a healthy Stafford. And it’s extremely unlikely a young QB could get to a point where his skill level would push Stafford out before he decides to hang them up.
I disagree with the rationalization that it's not going to matter. I think it is very easy for us, as fans sitting on the outside, to minimize how it feels for that old vet QB when his team is eyeing someone else for his job. And I believe the Rams understand this, as prior to this season it took McVay and Stafford clearing the room to get an agreement made for him to play. McVay knows damn well that if he's going to draft a QB there's gonna be a balance in there where it could possibly poison the well with Stafford.

If for example they're looking at one of multiple big legit wideouts who project outside the hash, Stafford's gonna be thinking fuck yeah what I can do with that dude. So if they then let's say reach for the QB I am sure McVay will be calling Stafford first to say hey this is our plan going forward to ensure you have the tools, and this QB is insurance. Because McVay has to work with him, and maintaining that level of trust they have is crucial to the relationship.

And there's nuance to this of course. Much of what you say makes perfect sense. I agree it is unlikely they draft someone better than him. I agree that he's ok with a young QB being added. But how it is done is gonna matter to Stafford.

Stupid leaders fuck this kind of stuff up. It's not unlike how Georgia and her pack of hyenas handled Vermiel and Martz during our '99 run. We'll never know how that would have gone down if the Rams hadn't been busy falling all over themselves to anoint Martz as the future HC out of fear some other team will hire him away. I felt at the time the same way I do now, that the team comms were critical to getting it done the right way. So if they want to mortgage picks to move way up for a QB that's going to shorten Stafford's time with us I think.

I've gone from "use both 1st round picks for a top QB" to "wait for 2027 unless Stafford says he's out." None of the QBs I've seen or read about have wowed me into giving away two 1st rounders. The 2027 class looks better. I'm still in on Sellers if he can be had with a late 1st-rounder.

Those that wrote off Arch already have gone awfully quiet as he has played very well the last couple weeks. As usually happens with talented young players who struggle early. Taking a wait and see is usually the best option over throwing out the hot take. Still think he stays in school but these last few weeks against good teams are more of what we thought we'd get and this week against Georgia is another big test.
I agree that we should pull some trees to draft Arch if he declares but sadly there is no way he declares with his family behind him and their college legacies

This is an opportunity for the Rams to grab a QB of the future. Potentially a chance that will never come around again unless you think the Rams are going back to being losers or take a dive to get a QB. This opportunity is even more rare in that this young QB would be able to learn behind one of the best and most fierce competitors at his position while being part of a winning organization. He wouldn’t be starting behind the eight ball of a losing program with no one to mentor him at his position.

It’s kind of a perfect situation. I’m not sure they can pass it up in hopes to be in that position in the future.
I agree in principle but that doesn’t have to be in round 1 especially looking at this draft where some talented QBs haven’t lived up to expectations and so should be available in later rounds e.g round 2, to be potentially coached up

How often does this strategy work? 5%? 10% of the time?
