Giants vs. Rams: Five things to watch on Sunday
Will the Giants play hard, and will the fans care?

Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams means absolutely nothing in the standings for the 1-6 New York Giants. They are going nowhere, slowwwwly, because the final nine weeks of the season are going to take forever to creep by. What we see Sunday, and over those final nine games, will, however, have long-term implications for the franchise.

Let’s look at five things to watch.

Will the Giants play like they give a damn?
That, quite honestly, should be a question you never have to ask about a professional athlete. Unfortunately, with these 1-6 Giants it is.

Whether Ben McAdoo wants to admit it or not, the recent suspensions of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Janoris Jenkins tell you there is an obvious disconnect between the coach and at least some of his players.

ESPN’s Jordan Ranaan wrote this week that players have admitted that a) some of their teammates don’t care anymore and b) some have lost respect for McAdoo.

Offensive lineman Justin Pugh said earlier this week that “We’re going to find out what the character of the men in this room is made of and it’s going to start this Sunday against a really good L.A. Rams team.”

Yes we will, and yes it does.

A pair of former Giants, both incidentally with Super Bowl rings, took to Twitter this week with some strong advice for Giants players.

Will the fans give a damn?
How many empty seats will there be at MetLife Stadium? How many of the filled ones will feature people wearing Rams jerseys? How quickly will the booing start if/when things go bad for the Giants? Might that booing even start when the Giants leave the locker room?

Things have already been ugly for the Giants at MetLife this season, especially during their Week 7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. If this season continues on its current path they are going to get uglier.

You can bet that Giants ownership will be paying just as much, if not more attention to what happens in the stands on Sunday as they will to what takes place on the field.

While those are the biggest questions about Sunday, there are also a few on-field things to watch.

A Sterling performance?
Wide receiver Sterling Shepard should be back in the lineup after missing the last two games with an ankle injury. That gives Eli Manning at least one real option to throw the ball to aside from tight end Evan Engram.

Let’s see if it makes a difference for the Giants’ struggling offense. It had better because ...

A real offense will be in the building
No, not the Giants. The Rams are averaging 30.3 points per game, second in the NFL this season. The Giants have not hit the 30-point plateau in 24 games with Ben McAdoo as head coach.

Los Angeles has an exciting young quarterback in Jared Goff. They have the talented Todd Gurley at running back, and he is having an excellent both as a runner and a receiver. They have the left tackle the Giants probably should have made a better effort to sign in free agency, Andrew Whitworth. They have a balanced receiving group that includes former Buffalo Bills Robert Woods and Sammy Watkins.

Can the Giants defense, without Jenkins and probably once again without Olivier Vernon and perhaps without middle linebacker B.J. Goodson (ankle) slow them down? If the game turns into a track meet, does the Giants offense have any chance of keeping up?

Those “subtle changes”
McAdoo promised “subtle changes” to both personnel and scheme following the bye week. What might those be?

The Giants can’t overhaul the roster at this point in the season, so it will be interesting to see what adjustments are made. Will they move Evan Engram around a bit more? How will Shepard be employed? Might the running back rotation change a bit? Might we see some offensive wrinkles? Defensively, with ever-changing personnel, might we see Steve Spagnuolo dial back on some of the creative blitz packages he likes?

None of that will be season-changing, but it is worth paying attention to.

The Giants are very similar to the Rams of last year. No OL, Good Defense. Now they have an injury bug.
The 1-6 Giants could easily be 4-3, right now. They won a lot of close games last year but are losing the close ones this year. So this isn't a gimme, and is very much a trap game.

I hate that term - "trap" game. "Trap" games don't exist for well coached, disciplined football teams. Fisher is long gone.

Rams are going to wallop the Giants. This game won't be close.

After reading the article about Gruden and McVay discussing opponents, I think hat the Rams are taking this one seriously. So hard to shake off the Fisher stank, where we lose to the easy opponents. I'm trying.

I think if there is such a thing, the Houston game is the one that became a trap game....

Q: What do you say about the perception that it’s a lack of respect towards Ben McAdoo?

A: No. I don’t think that’s the case. I don’t think it’s a deal on purpose trying to break rules or trying to do anything. I think it’s just some unfortunate events.

Q: Do you think that your teammates still give a damn?

A: Nah, I think we do. I think we go out there and we’re giving it our all. We have fun at practice and we are just trying to get better each day. Whoever is out there, we’re just trying to work and get better.

Q: What was CB Janoris Jenkins reason for not being here Monday?

A: I’m going to leave the personal conversations personal.

Q: What would you say about the perception that you’re losing the locker room?

A: I’m not concerned about perception. I’m concerned about reality. To turn your cheek to something that needs to be handled for disciplinary reasons because you’re worried about perception isn’t a smart thing to do. So I’m not concerned about perception.

These sound like a dead man walking, this HC may not get through the season.

The idiot can't even turn the phrase correctly.

Agreed, but what shall we do, make some quotes up?

Six already out for Giants against Rams
Posted by Darin Gantt on November 3, 2017

The Giants won’t have much work to do to turn in an inactive list Sunday against the Rams.

They’ve already declared six players out for this week’s game, including right tackle Justin Pugh (back) and center Weston Richburg (concussion).

Also out are linebackers Jonathan Casillas and BJ Goodson, and defensive ends Olivier Vernon and Kerry Wynn.

With cornerback Janoris Jenkins suspended, that’s their seven they’ll have to declare 90 minutes before kickoff.

Cornerback Donte Deayon is questionable with an ankle injury, but being though injury depleted has left the Giants that way as a whole.

3 key matchups in Giants-Rams game: Can Aaron Donald be blocked?
By Dan Duggan | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

The Giants will try to put their dismal start to the season behind them when they return from their bye to host the Rams on Sunday. The Rams have experienced a major turnaround under first-year coach Sean McVay, getting off to a surprising 5-2 start after going 4-12 last season. Meanwhile, drama continues to swirl around the 1-6 Giants, who will be without suspended cornerback Janoris Jenkins on Sunday.

Here's a look at the three key matchups in Sunday's game:

Giants OL vs. Rams DT Aaron Donald

The Giants tackles have faced a steady diet of elite pass rushers in the first seven games. The interior linemen will be put to the test on Sunday by Donald.

Donald has 16 tackles and three sacks and is graded as the league's best interior defensive lineman by Pro Football Focus. Center Brett Jones and guards D.J. Fluker and John Jerry will be responsible for containing Donald, who is capable of disrupting the game against the run and the pass.

Giants DT Damon Harrison vs. Rams RB Todd Gurley

Stopping Gurley will be the primary focus for the Giants' defense, and that starts with Harrison. The Rams pass the ball on 52 percent of their plays, which is one of the most balanced ratios in the league.

Gurley is averaging 4.3 yards per carry with five rushing touchdowns in a bounce-back season. The linebackers will also be tested by Gurley in the passing game, as he has a team-high 27 catches for 293 yards and three touchdowns.

The Giants' run defense started to return to form in the two games before the bye after a dreadful start to the season. If the Giants are able to contain Gurley, they'll be able to attack second-year quarterback Jared Goff.

Giants TE Evan Engram vs. Rams LB/S

Engram has been the Giants' top (only) threat in the passing game since the wide receiver corps was decimated by injuries in Week 5. Engram has been up to the task, with 11 catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns in the past two games.

Engram should benefit from the return of slot receiver Sterling Shepard from an ankle injury. Shepard will prevent defenses from focusing all of their attention on Engram. The Giants need to find a way to get the speedy tight end open deep for more big plays.

So with suspensions and injuries they'll struggle to dress 46 for Sunday? Rams better take care of business.

It's looking like the Giants are not going to pose much of a thread this week. That's a lot of injuries with OBJ already out. They may come out playing hard but, will not be able to sustain it and stay competitive.

Only way Rams can lose this game is if they turn the ball over.

Hang on to the rock, don't throw pick six's Protect the ball.
