I've not watched the Chargers this year yet - what's their O-line like?

Mike Pouncey and Chargers line face difficult test with Rams’ familiar interior

COSTA MESA – Over the three seasons together in Miami, Mike Pouncey watched as opposing offensive lines had no answer for Ndamukong Suh on the interior. Now, as the Chargers prepare for Suh and the Rams’ dominant defensive front, Pouncey is the lineman tasked with finding one.

At least, that’s how it seemed on Wednesday, as question after question was posed to the Chargers center about how to stop his former teammate. But no one here, Pouncey especially, is purporting to have the blueprint for slowing Suh or his equally terrifying linemate, last year’s Defensive Player of the Year, Aaron Donald.

“You’ve just got a guy (in Suh) who’s been a dominant player for a long time,” Pouncey said, “and he’s next to another dominant player. It’s going to be a real challenge for the offensive line. It’s going to be a really good test for us to see how we are up front as a unit.”

At the center of that challenge is Pouncey, a three-time Pro Bowl lineman who coaches and teammates have consistently raved about since his arrival this summer. His communication up front will be critical as the Rams try to create 1-on-1 rush situations for Donald, Suh and defensive end Michael Brockers, all of whom are capable of wreaking havoc if left without a double team.

As you might reason, the math generally doesn’t work out in their opponents’ favor.

“You can’t double team everyone,” right guard Michael Schofield said.

You can, however, get the ball out as quickly as possible. That’s how the Raiders successfully attacked the Rams defense in the first half of their Week 1 opener. It’s also generally how Philip Rivers has operated in the Chargers offense. But in the six quarters since they were caught flat-footed by that quick-passing strategy, the Rams haven’t allowed a single point on defense.

“I think they’re stacked in every position on every level,” Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said.

While the Rams secondary has been as tenacious as any in the league, the Chargers know their defensive dominance starts in the middle, where Pouncey, Schofield, and left guard Dan Feeney will have their hands full.

That trio has generally impressed Lynn thus far; though, through two weeks, Pro Football Focus has been less bullish, grading the Chargers offensive line as the third-worst in the NFL. With the most difficult interior challenge of the season ahead, there’s little room for that kind of error up front.

“In the run game, we have to do a really good job of going forward instead of backward because these guys like to cause havoc in the backfield,” Pouncey said. “They base their defense on shooting the gaps and making a mess.”

And after three seasons of seeing Suh up close, Pouncey knows all too well where that mess leads.

NOTES
The Chargers worked out three free agent defensive linemen on Wednesday. Among that group was defensive end Kony Ealy, a former second-round pick of Carolina who recorded three sacks in the 2016 Super Bowl. “Always looking for added depth,” Lynn said, when asked about the workouts.

Right tackle Joe Barksdale will miss Sunday’s game with a knee injury. Like Bosa, he remains week-to-week. … Wideout Travis Benjamin (foot) was limited at practice on Wednesday and left with a trainer during the open portion of practice. His status is uncertain for Sunday.

Thanks for that @Prime Time - I'm looking forward to this matchup :)

On a side-note - Barkesdale was one of my favourite Rams during the dark days

Here's some more from PFF:

https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-nfl-offensive-line-rankings-after-week-2

LAC-Chargers-Header.png

Starting Lineup:

Left Tackle: Russell Okung, 72.1
Left Guard: Dan Feeney, 45.2
Center: Mike Pouncey, 66.1
Right Guard: Michael Schofield, 62.3
Right Tackle: Sam Tevi, 47.1

This year was supposed to be different for the Chargers up front, but after two weeks, all it looks like is more of the same. Right tackle Sam Tevi looks completely out of his depth filling in for the injured Joe Barksdale. He’s allowed 10 pressures in two weeks and has the second-lowest pass-block grade of any tackle in the NFL.

See they are saying get the ball out quick ...but that means dink and dunk/screens/shallow crossing routes and slants

which none of will help when the rams are 27 points ahead in the 3rd qtr and you need chunk plays ..thats when our boys on D earn thier money

“We have a horizontal passing attack,” Head Coach Anthony Lynn said earlier this week. “So we are going to spread the defense out and try to get the guys the ball who are in the right holes.”
So they are going vertical - eh?

It's doubtful that most NFL offensive coordinators are dumb enough to use the first half of the Rams/Raiders game as a template for how to attack the Rams D. That only works if the Rams offense can be held to a low score.

Once their team is down by 14 points or more, they will have to air it out and hope they get lucky. So you're exactly right.

The best plan for opposing teams is to stay even with the Rams into the 4th quarter. Anything is possible after that. Penalties, turnovers, a botched assignment by our secondary, etc. Other than that they are doomed.

I believe in our linebackers to stop gurley and if our secondary doesn’t let Cooks do what T. Hill did we have a chance
-------------
No one is crushing the chargers
------------
it will take a great team to beat them period. The only weakness they got is their home crowd is weak lol
------------
Chargers may leave L.A. after this game... Beat down by the Rams.
------------
Yup and they should take the clippers with them
-----------
If Bosa was in it would be a different game
Rams 31 Chargers 24
--------------
Chargers will win 30-24
-------------
the rams are not good they played two bad teams
-----------
As long as we stop Gurley and our receivers don’t drop passes, we should win.
------------
Chargers win a thriller.
-------------
Rams-34 Chargers-23
And I'm a Chargers fan saying this.
-----------
Chargers will win. These NFC teams have no answer for Rivers . 24-28 Chargers

Rams are so scary
------------
We stop Gurley we win
----------
Gurley cant do shit if he is on the bench. None of that quick 3 and out bullshit that only kills 40 seconds. we do that over and over again Gurley will eat the clock away with long drives and tire out our defense from being out there so long.

That's 100% how I see us losing if we do. we control the clock we beat the Rams.
-------------
Oh wow the Rams beat the Cardinals and Raiders and yall think yall gonna blow us out hell
nah yall gonna see whatsup this weekend and at the end of the season
-----------
The Rams are super overrated and people just don't wanna see it. Chargers are the better team with better talent, Chargers win this game easy.

These comments are comical. A team that squeaked by the Bills saying we haven’t beaten anybody? Guess what, after we win Sunday we still won’t have beaten a good team.

Excellent, hopes and dreams to crush. Was beginning to think these Chargers fans had a firm grasp on reality until this new batch. The Rams defense keeps the Cardinals to 3 first downs until the last series when backups come in which would have been first time a team has done that since 2008 but sure... say the Cards are just bad and the Rams have no talent. Makes total sense.

Chargers are 7-point underdogs at Rams this week. Something to consider, Chargers have played well as big underdogs. Per @ESPNStatsInfo in Philip Rivers’ career, they are 11-3 against spread with 5 outright wins when listed as an underdog of least 7 points (including playoffs).
So define "well". Well enough to lose most of them? Ooh... how comforting.

I have to admit that I really do like Phillip Rivers. He is not the greatest QB in the world but he has been very good for very long and just seems like a good dude.

I can respect his homerism. That said... Bwahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

While that’s generally not a good win %, as 7pt dogs I think that’s actually really good. Now statistically speaking that still means the Rams got real good odds at winning, but those stats also show the chargers don’t tend to just lay down and accept defeat. They tend to make it a close game, which would give fans some hope.

Now none of that really matters or effects the outcome of this game but as a charger fan I’m sure it’s reassuring

I've watched Chargers Chiefs a few times now.

There were multiple times I rewound plays to rewatch Rivers and his ability to maneuver and step up in the pocket.

He does a really good job of stepping into an open spot but still having his eyes downfield.

The problem the Rams Dline presents is that the pressure is coming right into your lap. There isn't a place to step up.

Rivers and the Chargers will be a great test. I expect us to win. I expect this to be a game in which we get multiple sacks.
