I think it's better they don't. We have Mannion on a rookie contract. Might as well use the money elsewhere.
That makes sense until something happens to Goff.
If the starter is down for the season it's over for most teams anyway.
But if you 5 weeks let's say.....I want some experience.

If it's 5 weeks, I'll trust McVay to craft winning gameplans with Mannion.

Not sure if anyone remembers this but in 1999, the Rams smoked the Atlanta falcons 35-7. Before the rematch, there were some sound bites from falcons defensive players: (not verbatim) "How embarrassed were you last time? We're going to humble the Ram's ass today".

And then the Rams smoked them again 41-13.
I thought of this the other day....
Interesting if you look at who the better teams are this season and look back to that GSOT era.

Ok.
Can't argue that.
One is a little more "secure" than the other.
Risk and reward vs cap space is basically it.

Eh, I don't know about that. Like we both agree, nobody knows what Mannion is, but he's being coached by McVay, LaFleur, and Olsen. I think there's plenty of risk and reward there, but you get the benefit of the cap space as well. ;)

Hopefully, we won't have to find out.

As you know, I wasn't a fan of Mannion's college film. However, Teddy and Case have proven they can play in this league. Same with McCarron (to a lesser extent). Mannion has not. I am expecting good things from Mannion because of the coaches we have on offense right now, but he still hasn't done anything at this level. Until he does, hard to take him over guys who have.

The Dolphins technically have Cutler and Moore backing up Tannehill. That's outstanding QB depth.

Lets see Teddy B play a game coming back from that injury before calling him a decent back up. Yes he did well as a starter before his knee exploded, but who's to say he wont be a bit timid to take off running again, even with no one around him chasing him

Five Things To Watch: #LARvsAZ
Darren Urban

The top storylines heading into Sunday's game against the Rams

All aboard the Blaine train

We’re now heading into the third start of Blaine Gabbert as Cardinals quarterback and, barring something unforeseen, a stretch run full of Gabbert starts. This two-game gauntlet figured to show a lot about where Gabbert is as a QB. He handled the Jaguars, the league’s top defense, well.

Now he gets the Rams, a team that shut out the Cardinals earlier this season and have been known to rough up a Cardinals’ QB or two. A good performance by Gabbert will only increase momentum as the Cardinals try to figure out their QB situation for 2018.

Whoever is running, you gotta run

There is uncertainty of exactly who will be getting the carries for the Cardinals Sunday. Adrian Peterson is dealing with a neck issue, Kerwynn Williams has bad ribs, and it may come down to game day. But if the previous meeting against the Rams was any indication – or the last two weeks, in terms of coming away with a win or a loss – the Cardinals have to find a way to run the ball.

The Rams are only 27th in rush defense, although the Cardinals ran for only 25 yards in the previous blowout loss to Los Angeles. Gabbert would probably be able to run himself for some, but the running back – whoever it is – has to have some production.

Don’t get Johnson’d by Gurley

Remember the glory days of Week 1, when David Johnson was going to be the guy to dominate on the ground and through the air offensively. Yeah, that was undercut with the wrist injury, and Johnson is left to focus on community events while he sits out the season. But the Rams have their own version, thanks to the revamped offense and a jump in play of running back Todd Gurley.

Gurley already has 865 yards rushing and eight touchdowns, an increase from last season but not unexpected given his pedigree. It is Gurley’s receiving – 38 catches for 479 yards and three TDs – that has made him extra-tough. He’s not the pass-catcher Johnson is, but he’s good, and regardless of all the bells and whistles of the Rams’ offense, is the player that must draw the focus of the Cardinals.

Secondary surge

The Cardinals have had rookie safety Budda Baker as one of the top-graded at his position by Pro Football Focus in both of his two starts. Safety Tyrann Mathieu is coming off his best game of the year.

And Patrick Peterson is Patrick Peterson. With Chandler Jones menacing quarterbacks on the pass rush, the group is in good shape – and will need to be against this offense and a Rams’ receiving corps that has done well. Robert Woods is injured, but Peterson should lock up with Sammy Watkins, and the Cards need to find a way to get to rookie slot man Cooper Kupp as well.

Remember London

That week in London was a cool experience. The game in London was terrible. The Cardinals lost, 33-0, and they lost quarterback Carson Palmer to a broken arm. In Patrick Peterson’s words, “We didn’t show up.”

It’s hard to imagine for a game against a division rival, but the Cardinals can’t change it now. What they can do is equal the season series, which would give the Cardinals their first two-game winning streak of the season and put a dent in the Rams’ NFC West lead. The Rams are for real. But the Cardinals should never be 33 points worse.

Los Angeles Rams at Arizona Cardinals: Q&A with Revenge of the Birds
Getting the inside info from Revenge Of The Birds, the SB Nation community for Arizona Cardinals fans
by 3k

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Rams are headed on the road in Week 13 to play the Arizona Cardinals.

It’s a rematch from the Week 7 blowout in London which the Rams won 33-0, one that leaves that game far back in the memory. Since enjoying the bye a week later, both teams have found themselves on divergent paths.

The Rams are ramping up for their first playoff push since the 2010 season while enjoying their first season without a losing record since 2006 while the Cards are looking at the end of an era as QB Carson Palmer and WR Larry Fitzgerald are in the twilight of their careers as Arizona yet again sits near the .500 mark looking for a way to start their next generation of football.

So to get a better understanding of what we’re facing, I linked up with Seth Cox from Revenge Of The Birds, the SB Nation community for Cardinals fans.

So it's been more than a month since the Rams and Cardinals faced off in London. What's the major differences between the Week 7 and Week 13 Cardinals (and you have to provide more than a two-word answer consisting of "Blaine Gabbert") (or you don't have to if you don't want to)?

I wrote about it the other day, but in my opinion, Bruce Arians has done his best coaching job since the Palmer injury. Sure they're 2-2, but they are struggling to get stops on defense, which is another story, not make plays on offense. In fact, outside of the Seattle game, they've held leads going into the fourth quarter of the other three games. That's on Arians game planning well and putting the onus on his defense.

They faltered at the hands of Tom Savage, which honestly almost broke the will of the fanbase for this year, and almost gave up a 13 point lead to Blake Bortles, but they found a way.

That’s the biggest difference thus far, that Arians is having to change who he is and what he does and through four weeks, it has worked… Sort of.

How is the offense looking overall? Obviously you guys have had to remake things on the fly. What was supposed to be a Carson Palmer-David Johnson QB-RB combo has morphed into something entirely different. What will you guys be taking from this offense into 2018?

It's completely different. When you are not playing well, you grasp at positives, the positives right now are that Blaine Gabbert looks like a passable NFL quarterback, the offense is different, much more quick passing, short, get the backs and tight ends involved and they are doing enough offensively to win games… unfortunately there is another side of the ball.

The whole game plan is modeled around the idea of not asking Blaine Gabbert to win you the game.

They've done that and it's worked. In the fourth quarter against the Texans when they needed a drive to tie or win, Gabbert threw two interceptions. Last week, he found a way to make a couple good throws and get them in field goal range, an aside, is 57 yards really field goal range or is it more a field goal prayer? Anyways, we haven't had to see the Cardinals play from a big early deficit this season. That's really the key so far.

What's right with the defense and what's wrong? I know you didn't think they'd struggle as much as they have, but is there a glaring soft spot or technical issue that has to be resolved for you guys moving forward?

Honestly, I am not sure they're built the right way. They've invested in a lot of safeties and inside linebackers. They were savvy enough to trade for Chandler Jones, but look at the defensive line. Their highest paid player is former first round pick Robert Nkemdiche. They do a nice job against the run, but they don't get consistent pressure from anyone but Chandler Jones (who would be and should be a DPOY candidate) unless they blitz.

Then, of course, you have the curse of the not Patrick Peterson cornerback, although Tramon Williams has played well.

They gave up 31 points to Tom Savage and 17 (7 was the Jags defense) to Blake Bortles in back to back weeks. They have to probably be closer to that 17 number if they want to hang with LA.

I think, outside of Jones, the one great thing over the last two weeks is watching Budda Baker and Tyrann Mathieu, Budda Badger, play together. They've played so, so well together and they can disguise what they're doing now because they have both players.

How have the rookies done to this point in the season? Who's performing above expectations?

Rookie? Outside of Budda Baker the last two weeks, the rookie impact has been negligible at best. Haason Reddick is down to about 30% of the snaps, even when Deone Bucannon went down with an injury early against the Jags, it was Josh Bynes that got the call.

Budda Baker has played 98% of the snaps the last two games and this isn't hyperbole… He looks like 2015 Tyrann Mathieu. He's incredible, all over the field, wreaking havoc. It's thoroughly enjoyable to watch and also maddening that it took until game nine of the season for him to get on the field more than eight defensive snaps… Yes, that is accurate, Budda Baker did not play more than eight defensive snaps until week 10 of the 2017 NFL season. It's honestly negligence.

Rudy Ford gets some special teams burn and Chad Williams played 29 snaps last week, his first action since week three. This class hasn't had much impact, but Baker is worth the price of admission.

When we last met, I asked you about the trajectory of the team for 2017 and the franchise as a whole looking at an NFL landscape post-Larry Fitzgerald and post-Carson Palmer. Has the feeling on that front changed much? Is the thought of a Cardinals team not coached by Bruce Arians something to take seriously yet?

Well, Larry Fitzgerald signed a one-year extension through 2018, not that it means he's coming back, but it gives the look that next year may be the swan song of that trio.

The offense is a bit of a mess, they don't have any receivers outside of Fitz and the offensive line is a question mark, but they seem to like Blaine Gabbert… I know, I know.

Defensively, they have young talent at all three levels, let me rephrase that, they have invested on all three levels, but they don't seem to put it altogether as much as you'd like.

I don't think anyone is looking forward to what's next, because there are too many questions. Coach? Quarterback? Offensive weapons not named David Johnson? I think the biggest thing is, they don't have an identity outside of Arians/Palmer/Fitz. They need to fix that, but it may be 2019 before that happens.

We've had a bunch of supposed trap games this year. We've kicked the crap out of those teams time and time again. Why stop now? Looks like Arizona fans just finally regained a little hope. Let's stomp it out of them. Jared Goff, I am formally requesting a 300+ yard 2+ TD game from you. Todd Gurley, I am formally requesting a 100+ YFS 2+ TD game from you.
I originaly posted in another thread that this is a clasic trap game, but after thinking about this thru the week, I don't think the Rams will have trap games. This is all to new, all the winning feels to good. The coaching is still new. The team might loose games but it won't be because they loose focus. Remember the Rams 1999, no trap games. They had to much to prove. Same goes with 2017 Rams.

Seems to me that Mannion may be one of the best back up QBs in the league. Is there a team you feel has better depth at QB?
Personally, I don't like to talk about this. No need, till we need. I don't talk about plane crashes when I fly. Don't talk about car crashes when I drive. Don't like to talk injuries either. I am funny that way. Let's change the subject. LOL.

61% completion, 498 yards 5 TDs, 3 Ints.....
Not terrible numbers for Gabbart in his two starts.
Vs Houston and Jacksonville Ds.
I think he presents some challenges for the D.
The 5 TDs in two games for an O that was struggling mightily opens the eyes a bit.
I think we need to mix up coverage looks and blitz looks. Make him a little hesitant and he may go back to his old form. That said the Cards have receiving talent still.
Because he can move well I think their O may be better with that line than it was with Palmer in some ways. He doesn't have Palmers talent or experience obviously but he isn't a statue either.
I'd agree....with keeping him in the pocket...for Donald to meet and greet.

I'm thinking this game will be worse on the Cards than the London game, the Rams don't have to Travel that Far to it!! "46 - Zip Rams"!
