Arizona Cardinals take on Los Angeles Rams, hope the sequel to London game is much better

The Cardinals have been the headliners in a couple of awful films this year. There was the 34-7 loss to the Eagles in October and the 33-0 loss to the Rams in October in London.
It’s hard to pick which one was worse, but at least the Cardinals didn’t have to rewatch their game against the Eagles.
This week, the Cardinals had to relive their debacle in London
to prepare for a rematch with the Rams on Sunday.
“That was like one of them tapes you burn,” offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin said. “And then you burn it again and then you burn it again. Unfortunately, we had to watch it.
“It was a nightmare, and it was a long ride home, brother. Long ride home.”
The Cardinals (5-6) went 2-2 between games with the Rams, but they think they improved significantly over the past month.
In London, they never recovered from missing a field goal on the opening possession and being outscored 17-0 in the last six minutes of the first half.
Last week, they responded much better to adversity, regaining a lead in the fourth quarter and beating the Jaguars in the final seconds.
“We’re so young, they don’t know any better,” coach Bruce Arians said, laughing.
By necessity, the Cardinals have undergone a transformation over the past month. Blaine Gabbert is starting at quarterback after injuries to Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton. D.J. Foster has replaced Andre Ellington as the third-down back.
Rookie Budda Baker is starting at safety, rookie Chad Williams has moved into the rotation at receiver and rookie tight end Ricky Seals-Jones has three touchdown receptions the past two weeks.
The Rams, in contrast, look pretty much the same as a month ago. Jared Goff is still the quarterback. Running back Todd Gurley is healthy and so are the five offensive linemen blocking for him.
The biggest news involving the Rams this week was the revelation that coach Sean McVay changes plays at scrimmage via radio communications with Goff.
Goff wore a microphone during a recent game, and it picked up McVay giving him instructions up until the moment the headset switches off with 15 seconds on the play clock.
Cardinals defensive coordinator James Bettcher said that shouldn’t detract from Goff’s improvement this year.
“I think that happens with teams a little more than is probably talked about,” Bettcher said of coaches communicating with quarterbacks at scrimmage. “I think Sean has done a great job with their offense, and their offensive coaches have done a great job of trying to put (Goff) in the best possible situation.
“He’s making good decisions with the ball. He’s not turning it over a bunch. He’s decisive where he wants to go, and to complement that, they are running the ball with a very physical, talented running back.”
That’s
where the Cardinals' defensive preparations began this week. In London, Gurley rushed 22 times for 106 yards, becoming the first back to surpass the 100-yard mark against the Cardinals since Buffalo's LeSean McCoy did it in Week 3 of the 2016 season.
“We cannot allow this team to come in and run the ball on us,” Bettcher said. “That’s a very major part of what we’re talking about defensively.”
The Cardinals' running game could take on yet another look on Sunday.
Adrian Peterson didn’t practice this week because of a neck injury and is listed as questionable. If Peterson can’t play, Kerwynn Williams likely would start, but he is playing through cracked ribs.
Elijhaa Penny has one carry this season, and D.J. Foster, the team’s third-down back, will be playing in just his third game for the Cardinals.
Then again, it would be hard for the Cardinals' run game to be worse than it was earlier this year against the Rams. The Cardinals gained 25 yards on 21 carries.
“It was more of one guy getting beat, all along the line,” Arians said. “Four of five guys had their guy blocked and that one guy made the tackle. We got to do a better job of finishing those blocks.”
Even up
The Rams and Cardinals have each won 38 games in this long-running rivalry, which includes two ties and a postseason game (a 35-23 Rams victory in 1975). Here are the results of the Cardinals' nine games with the Rams during the Bruce Arians era:
9.8.2013 at STL: Rams, 27-24.
12.8.2013 at Glendale: Cards, 30-10.
11.9.2014 at Glendale: Cards, 31-14.
12.11.2014 at STL: Cards, 12-6.
10.4.2015 at Glendale: Rams, 24-22.
12.6.2015 at STL: Cards, 27-3.
10.2.2016 at Glendale: Rams, 17-13.
1.1.2017 at LA: Cards, 44-6.
10.22.2017 at London: Rams, 33-0.

Arizona Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Rams picks, predictions: Who wins Week 13 NFL game?
Jeremy Cluff, azcentral sports
azcentral sports: Rams 27, Cardinals 17
Kent Somers writes: "The Rams have their health and an 8-3 record. The Cardinals have six starters on injured reserve and are 5-6. They have yet to win consecutive games this season and will try Sunday for the sixth time this season. The Rams, however, are better in every area."
CBS Sports: Cardinals 21, Rams 20
Pete Prisco writes: "This game will likely decide whether the Cardinals have a chance to make the playoffs. They won a tight one against the jaguars last week, and I think they have a chance here. In fact, I think they squeak out a close one behind their defense. Upset special."
Bleacher Report: Rams 30, Cardinals 20
Chris Simms writes: "This will be a good test for the Los Angeles Rams to see how they handle coming off a big win. The Arizona Cardinals could threaten the L.A. defense too because Blaine Gabbert has added a new dimension to the offense. His strength and athleticism have helped make up for some very suspect pass protection.
The Rams defense will ultimately be too much for even the new-look Cardinals offense, though. Coordinator Wade Phillips does some creative things schematically, and there is talent at all three levels of the defense. While the L.A. defense doesn't simply shut people down, it will create some big plays of its own.
Its one weakness is against the run, but the Cardinals aren't consistent enough on the ground to expose that. There is talent on the Arizona defense too. However, it's not good enough to stop the Rams offense all game long. Head coach Sean McVay is too creative and will find ways to gets guys open downfield against anyone. L.A. has something to play for, and it'll notch another win here."
Sporting News: Rams 31, Cardinals 13
David Steele writes: "The Rams, who ended Carson Palmer's season last month, will never forgive themselves if they let Blaine Gabbert beat them the way he beat the Jaguars last week. They stopped the Saints’ winning streak without Robert Woods, so they have a feel for it as he’ll be out again this week. Suggestion: heavy doses of Todd Gurley, who hasn't had 20 carries in a game since five games ago, against the Cardinals, in London … when they won 33-0."
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Rams 34, Cardinals 14
Gerry Dulac writes: "When these division teams met on Oct. 22, the Rams posted a 33-0 shutout. It won’t be that lopsided this time, but the Cardinals are relying on a retread quarterback and running back. Not the Rams."
nj.com: Rams win
Joe Giglio writes: "It's Sean McVay's world; we're just living in it."
Sporting News: Rams 23, Cardinals 20
It writes: "The Rams shut out the Cardinals earlier in the season, and they knocked out Carson Palmer in the process. The Cards will look to deal some sort of revenge, inspired by their home upset of the Jaguars last week. Still, defensively, they have too many holes, and Blaine Gabbert will succumb to Wade Phillips’ revved-up attack. Jared Goff also is not Blake Bortles."
NOLA.com: Rams win
Jim Derry writes: "Hard to believe - or maybe it isn't - the Cardinals won their first game this season against a team with a winning record by defeating Jacksonville. The last time they won two in a row against winning teams? Weeks 10 and 11 of the 2015 season against Seattle and Cincinnati. LA's loss to the Vikings seems to have turned their focus back on, and the Rams have a recent history of success in Phoenix, having won two in a row there. Make it three."
