I'm guessing he knew that the Patriots had called the Rams to inquire on Stafford.

My reasoning on this is that I figure the Rams knew the cap would keep them from moving him but other teams with QB needs probably made the call anyway to ask about him. Certainly the Pats would be one of those teams. And while Lombardi was busy tonguing Belicheat's ass he probably came up for air long enough to catch wind of all that.

Best lies for clickbait are the ones that make sense, which this one does outside of the cap problem. Had the Rams not paid Stafford it is entirely possible the Rams deal him to allow for keeping the younger QB in Mayfield. But they did pay him. So I think this was a well crafted lie that got him the clickbait he was looking for.

Yep trade him and have no QB1 but still left with deadcap. The earliest the Rams can really move on from Stafford is after 2024. That was how they structured his contract. We need to hope he can hold up two more years. But I really think they will draft a QB next year and use 2024 as a red shirt year for their new QB1. That is why I question how long Bennett will be on the team. Once it's clear he won't be anything but a backup on the Rams he's going to want to be traded or released.

At best I see a journeyman type of player in Bennett but not a franchise talent. Yeah next year's draft is going to be interesting. The only QB1 worth trading for is Herbert. Now if they were trying to trade for Herbert then I could understand that. The one suspicious thing about this rumor is who would they play at QB1? No way McVay wants to go through rookie growing pains. That's why I think they have a specific QB in next year's draft they will target and give him a full year behind Stafford to grow into the position. That's how the Chief's did Mahomes and it's always been the best way to develop a QB. You can damage a rookie's confidence by playing him prematurely.

Despite the championships Bennett was predicted to go undrafted so is he really going to make a fuss about being #3? Chase Daniel had a nice career and if he’s smart he’s got a bunch of money in the bank from holding a clipboard.

I have finally in my life been able to buy a brand new pick up truck two years ago... its a very expensive truck and I love it... I don't drive it everyday but It always works great and runs perfect... I would never sell it... but if someone offered me enough to buy a brand new truck just like mine with cash left over... I would listen.
That's all this is....

Big dropoff from Stafford to him, for sure. But what would that look like after another camp or two. I love Stafford and always will for that title run but age is undefeated and he's got hard miles.

Yeah - calll BS as well. Maybe they took calls or asks around at some point.

The Rams were all in for sure once they decided to trade Jalen Ramsey.Don’t know the time frame.

—Just knowing how The Rams have structured 2023 season shows they are all in with Stafford which should get ALL RAM FANS excited.
As long as Stafford survives this season?

He will totally cement his HOF status in '24.

Yeah I'm hoping that's what happens. Would love to see him finish with another title with us or at the least a couple deep playoff runs. No idea if his health will allow it and also he's going to need to be that guy we saw in the playoff run more consistently. The guy we saw last year even given bad protections wasn't his best ball. He needs a big season to remind everyone who he can be.

It’s nice to see Stafford being 100% as a Ram.Getting his reps in during training camp will make a BIGGER difference than last season when Wolford was running the 1st team.

Whatever makes Stafford a HOF player is really irrelevant. Then again The Rams already have him.

I love the “any team could’ve had him” line, yeah if both teams were willing to destroy their cap they could’ve done it no problem.

Yeah that’s the kind of absurd exclamation that taints the whole take. Like the Rams would have tossed him to any NFC Team or dumpster fires like Houston or Arizona.

There is an aspect of this supposition that bothers me.

1. We haven't heard a denial from the Rams.
2. If they did try to trade him, it's because they know something that isn't public knowledge.
3. It they do know something that isn't public knowledge IMO it would be health related.
4. Stafford was symptomatic of a chronic tendonitis condition last year. If that's true it's not a matter of if it will crop up but when.

In 2019 he had back fractures, now in 2022 he has a spinal contusion that takes a full year to heal as did his back fractures. In both cases he returned early. He also had an undisclosed knee injury in 2020. This is on top of his fractured ribs, and a serious ankle injury that same year. Some people are susceptible to bone fractures and you have to wonder if the Rams now see something that gives them a reason to doubt whether he can play out the two more years of his contract that the Rams need him to complete. It would explain why only now did they actually draft a backup QB. Is it because they seriously doubt he can complete this year? Next year they can draft a QB of the future so if Stafford goes down in 2024 he can retire and the Rams will have a QB1 other than Bennett.

IMO the Ram's silence speaks louder than words in regards that they are legitimately concerned that Matt may not complete the final two years they need him to finish due to the cap implications.

IMO the only thing that will really keep the Rams out of contention is Stafford's health. That is the biggest vulnerability that this team has.

No we didn't.
*************************************

It appears as if Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is staying put after all.

Despite rumors to the contrary, general manager Les Snead shot down rumors of that they were 'making calls' in regards to a trade of Stafford, calling their Super Bowl-winning quarterback one of the franchise's key pillars for the future.

“We’re going to definitely rely on Matthew," Snead said on Thursday. "He’s definitely one of our pillars. He’s definitely someone we’re going to rely on as we remodel this.”

Snead would go on to describe Stafford, alongside Cooper Kupp and Aaron Donald, as one of the franchise's 'weight-bearing walls'.

These comments from snead come in the midst of a report from NFL insider Michael Lombardi, who claimed the Rams were actively shopping Stafford in an effort to get out from under his massive contract.

Hm, so Les Snead debunked those rumours the same day that Lombardi reported them? Yet Lombardi is still repeating them four months later? Why, because he's on the Pat McAfee show trying to argue the Rams would dump Aaron Donald at the first opportunity.

Would the rest of the media investigate Lombardi's claims, or would they just copy and paste for their own stories. He reported this in March after all, yet the rest of these rags are all acting like he's saying something new.

The tanking narrative is really hot around the Rams right now.

Who he is.

Easily MVP of the Super Bowl with that clutch performance.
Without a doubt. But the NFL stands for "Not For Long." And the Rams have the highest of standards and a coach who is not patient.

Well first of all...I'm back active in the forum. Took a hiatus from Rams/NFL. Now that camp is on the horizon, I'm diving back in.

Stafford can't be moved anyway in my opinion. No one wants to take on that contract. He will most likely retire from the Rams.

Stafford is here for this year anyhow.

Things are starting to come out. The Rams aren't happy with Stafford in regards to his contract.

This tells me that Stafford could be gone as early as next year or no later than after the 2024 season. Matt obviously wants to take his money and retire. I think he refused because it obviously would open the door for the Rams to trade him or release him next year. So now it would lend credence to the reported wanting to trade him.

The big question is why have the Rams soured on Stafford their golden boy? I think it's his health. I think they like me are seriously worried about his repeated spinal injuries. It also seems to lock in the Rams taking a QB in the first round next year. It's what I've been hearing for months and why I posted that I think the Rams will take a QB in the next draft to be their QB1 of the future. It also could mean they will make an all out play for Herbert next year while he's on his fifth year option. He's exactly the gunslinger type of QB that McVay covets. I still don't believe cheap ass Spanos will pay what Herbert will demand as a FA.

I think this whole thing is just getting started.

So you mean that we trade up for Caleb/A.N.Other next April and then don’t draft in the first round again until 2027-ish?
