Was McVay premature in bailing on Goff to trade for Stafford?

You’re completely missing the point, man.

The question is NOT about which QB is the better.

The question is whether McVay would have been strategically better off from 2021 to 2031 if he had kept Goff, coached to Goff’s strengths (as Campbell has done) and kept the two 1sts and the 3rd?
This would be a great question for short time fans of this team, or bandwagoners who have no clue as to the value of a title. But anyone who goes back as a Rams fan understands how fucking stupid it is.

One other point I've seen in this thread that justifies the trade is that it prevented those fucking pieces of shit from NorCal getting Stafford. So in addition to getting a Super Bowl win, we probably also prevented those cocksuckers from getting one or maybe two.

Yes.

This would be an 80s nightmare reborn if SF had gotten Stafford. They'd have at least one title. Rams would be back in that 80s mode where they had some good teams but never could put it together. BUT BY GOD WE'D HAVE THOSE PICKS WE GAVE UP!!!!

I appreciate the question and discussion. IMO, they wouldn't have been strategically better off if they had kept Goff simply because I doubt they would have a SB win.

Timing is huge! They knew they had a short window with Whit's and AD's age. In the NFL (Not For Long league), you go for the gold whenever you have the chance.

Worrying about 2031 when you can win in 2021 is futile.

Yes, it would have been a new Dark Age for the Rams. Ugh.

Preventing them from winning a Super Bowl is second only to us actually winning one.

OK - I'll play.

No, they would not have been strategically better off because you're positing that McVay change his coaching approach to cater to Goff's deficiencies, instead of finding someone who could thrive in his system.

Also, you're kind of assuming Goff would have improved, which means the "2 firsts" would have been in the 25-32 range, which are good draft picks, but far from premium, which is the usual perception.

And then there's the Superbowl....(and Tampa Bay. Goff just doesn't make that throw. :cheers2:

Superbowl - 100% agree but I think we still beat Tampa Bay because Goff killed them the year before and TB wasn't doing shit against our defense until our offense let them back in the game.

Does the center make the same mistake with Goff back there that basically gave TB momentum? Different story. I doubt that would happen.

But we would have lost against the 49ers with Goff and not even make it to the Super Bowl.

Put Goff behind our patchwork oline and without any playmakers , and you’d see why we made the trade. Stafford can carry a team when needed , which seems like a lot lately.

The play calling has to be better !! I just watch this thing.I know now why I got so upset.

I was thinking the same thing about Goff, but Matthew Stafford is probably The Best QB I’ve seen as a RAMS FAN!! Your right in a lot of ways. You look at how The Rams defense was DOMINATING!!!

What a disgrace & Whoever was play calling really F’d UP !!
YELLING ON MY PART was not fair.

WOW !! 6-0 & the defense stood STRONG!!! Establish the RUN!!
—I will say RIGHT NOW & ALWAYS 3-3 at Da Bears 18!! Mcvay LOST that Lions game IMO or at least set precedent on going for it on 4th down. You have to run it twice,or at least go for it.
—Then get the ball back & fumble. Now Matthew Stafford made a bad INT that got called back because of the DB stepping out of bounds. Which makes not running the ball on 1st. Dwn worse !!! You change THE WHOLE GAME!!

I lost my chit & disgraced myself in away I feel ashamed.I couldn’t stop getting upset at Mcvay. In the 3rd qtr. he did it again & that was it.Seeing the DOMINANCE The Rams had was beautiful. Not giving them the best chance to win is inexcusable.

-sorry for venting, but IMO Stafford had Goff beat.I would have scored 3 to start the season on 4th & 4.
I would have run the ball on 3rd down on the 18 & on 4th who knows.I trust Stafford.
—Still against Detroit Stafford has to complete that 3rd & 3 with less than 2 minutes.

Well said. Even my wife asks why they run the same screen play to the left 10 times a game. And she doesn’t understand the game at all. Maybe from listening to me hollering about it every Sunday.

Bingo!! We won the SB when being down to one weapon in Kupp. Does anyone really believe that Goff could have won that game in those circumstances?

If Gurley doesn't hurt his knee in a preseason 2017 game versus the Oakland Riders, we will win the 2018 Super Bowl and maybe a few more with a healthy Gurley and an above-average system QB- Jared Goff.

Seems those who were 100% self committed to Jared Goff are still having trouble dealing with letting go and maybe that everything they said in the past didn’t come to fruition. Maybe that their was the ultimate success with him and they feel totally unfulfilled?

What Stafford did on the final play before the game winning kick in Tampa. What Stafford did in the 4th quarter against the 49ers. What Stafford did on the final drive in the Superbowl. I doubt Goff does any of that. Talk to me about it when Goff wins a Superbowl.

The playoffs that year were probably the most concrete example of a series of "cases closes" moment in sports I can remember. Stafford consistently made plays everyone knows goff could never make in key moments, which was the exact reason they traded for him.

Yes. That four game stretch by Stafford was Hall of Fame material. Straight badass.

I think the dude needs to play better. But the thing with 9 is we know he can buckle down and steal souls vs the top competition this league has to offer with zero run game. There are not many QBs in this league who can say that.

Ask yourself this. Two minutes left. One timeout. Down by four. A field goal won't cut it. You need a touchdown. Who would you trust? Goff or Stafford? For me its Stafford and its not close. How many quarterbacks in the league would you trust more than Stafford in that situation? Not many in my opinion.

Here is my take on it, and it could be completely off base, but it is what my gut tells me...

Goff is a good, not great QB. He was coasting, and needed the trade to light a fire in him to become better. He needed a chip on his shoulder, and the trade gave him that. He has always been very good when given time, and not good under pocket pressure. Similar to Cousins. He may win a SB at some point, and if he does, he will have McVay & Snead to thank for that, for giving him the drive he was lacking.
