Was McVay premature in bailing on Goff to trade for Stafford?

i really love that we got super bowl ring also in mcvay we have a coach in my opinion that can do more with less than any other coach in the Legue. at the same time i think snead must get drunk to pay what he pays in trades and then trades those same players for almost nothing. also he gives the great contract to players who don't deserve them and lets player that do deserve good contract walk away for almost nothing. i know that most will disagree with me but remember i said that wining that super bowl was worth it but ithink with someone besides snead we could have made the trade that got us the sb and be in far better shape today.

Am I the only one wondering why Goff was struggling those last 2 years under McVay but now is an elite QB under Campbell?

if McVay is such an offensive genius, how could that happen?

And what does that say about McVay’s ability to coach to his players strengths rather than requiring the player to function within McVay’s preferred system?

Think about it before you post a knee jerk reaction, please.
Tart catch’s that punt a couple of years ago then this is a completely different conversation

Honestly you make good points my friend, they’re just not gonna fly here and that‘s the way it is ‍and always will remain

Trophy is losing it’s shine year after year, we better find a QB sooner than later or back to the wilderness our boys will linger

Yeah, most everyone continues to reduce my question to, ‘which one is better QB’?

Despite my explanation of the nuances twice.

Fascinating…

I'm afraid had we kept Goff and fixed the OL we would have continued to be a good team that made the playoffs only to get knocked out when the opposing defense took the run game away.

Also Goff under pressure is sketchy as hell. Towards the end of his time with the Rams I remember holding my breath everytime he'd drop back to pass hoping there wasn't a interception or fumble.

I'm not convinced that Goff isn't still that same guy. Whether or not we put the resources into the OL I think we'd still be trying to get that second Lombardi. I just don't believe in him or trust him enough anymore to be our QB especially in big games.

A bird in hand is worth two in the bush so in my opinion a guaranteed Superbowl win > 10 years of good teams but maybe we win or maybe we don't.

News flash amigo…Goff has progressed like any good drop back passer would, not that 2/3rds here can actually comprehend this?

McVay didn't believe Goff would get there in AD's prime. He was right about that.

Maybe in an alternate universe we kept Goff and aced the last three drafts to look just like Detroit right now (with a 10% chance of winning SB 59 per Vegas).

I'm not trading places.

The Rams wanted to win, they were back in LA and needed to sell tickets and Goff after the SB appearance didn't look like that guy that could get you a trophy. Hey we won a super bowl with Stafford and Goff still doesn't have a ring so talk to me after he does.

For the future I think there needs to be ban of articles posted here about the Goff/Stafford trade, as there is nothing new that hasn’t been discussed hundreds of times. Especially since they all seem like they only want to question McVay’s intelligence; just because he’s so successful.

Stafford is in a tier above Goff. Last time I checked, Goff went to a Super Bowl under McVay and has yet to make it that far under Campbell.
You can argue for building around Goff in LA but there is no question the trade was a success for the Rams. We have seen Goff play in a Super Bowl and it was like a deer in headlights. Stafford was masterful.
If you put Goff in the current Rams offense, this team is 0-4, no question. Goff has always struggled against the blitz and with reading a defense. McVay wanted a QB that didnt need to be spoon-feed information pre-snap.

We have covered this ground before.

My initial reaction was it was a stupid knee jerk reaction by a young coach that was spinning out of control after being outcoached in a Super Bowl and then seeing his offense deteriorate after the Oline fell apart. Then scape goating his young QB who admittedly looked bad under a poor Oline.

Goff was the Youngest QB to win a NFC Championship and as he is showing again he is more than capable of leading an Elite offense as long as he has that Oline around him. He is nothing without an Oline but he is an excellent QB with that Oline.

After seeing the Rams had a bigger plan then just acquiring Stafford I still viewed it as risky, but was more behind the move. The Rams implemented the F them picks approach and brought along key pieces such as Von Miller, OBJ, Weddle etc. The Window for Witt and Donald were clearly requiring an all in approach. Stafford admittedly had more experience and more ability under pressure to push us over the Top. While he was annoyingly inconsistent during the regular season his Playoff run justified the trade.

Admittedly Kupp was unreal in the playoff run as well and Goff never had that luxury as Kupp was injured during Goff's Super Bowl run. So it is a bit of an apples to oranges comparison. Kupp was at the pinnacle of his career and rightly was the MVP. Everyone knew the ball was going to him and he was uncoverable.

Looking back, The Rams made the right decision because they went all in and got the Lombardi and Stafford played unreal clutch ball. Could Goff done that with that roster and Kupp? Possibly. No one can honestly say with 100% certainty, though everyone has an opinion of course. We are 100% certain that we did get that Lombardi with Stafford however, and that justifies the trade.

The Lions look poised to have a multi year run. Can Goff raise his game another notch in the playoffs and get a few rings?

We shall see.

Hopefully we are not in QB hell after Stafford retires.

If Gurley doesn't hurt his knee in a preseason 2017 game versus the Oakland Riders, we will win the 2018 Super Bowl and maybe a few more with a healthy Gurley and an above-average system QB- Jared Goff.
Well, Rams win that Super Bowl with Stafford even without Gurley and Kupp.

I don't think we win that Super Bowl with Goff instead of Stafford, so the trade was a success. Stafford was lights out. Non-stop come from behind wins and game winning drives. Goff likely could have done it too in some games but not in all of them.

I also don't think Goff develops under McVay the way he did under Campbell. McVay didn't trust him to read a defence. If that was right or wrong, up for debate, but it stunted his development in that part of game, he was never going to grow with Sean keeping the training wheels on.
