We have covered this ground before.
My initial reaction was it was a stupid knee jerk reaction by a young coach that was spinning out of control after being outcoached in a Super Bowl and then seeing his offense deteriorate after the Oline fell apart. Then scape goating his young QB who admittedly looked bad under a poor Oline.
Goff was the Youngest QB to win a NFC Championship and as he is showing again he is more than capable of leading an Elite offense as long as he has that Oline around him. He is nothing without an Oline but he is an excellent QB with that Oline.
After seeing the Rams had a bigger plan then just acquiring Stafford I still viewed it as risky, but was more behind the move. The Rams implemented the F them picks approach and brought along key pieces such as Von Miller, OBJ, Weddle etc. The Window for Witt and Donald were clearly requiring an all in approach. Stafford admittedly had more experience and more ability under pressure to push us over the Top. While he was annoyingly inconsistent during the regular season his Playoff run justified the trade.
Admittedly Kupp was unreal in the playoff run as well and Goff never had that luxury as Kupp was injured during Goff's Super Bowl run. So it is a bit of an apples to oranges comparison. Kupp was at the pinnacle of his career and rightly was the MVP. Everyone knew the ball was going to him and he was uncoverable.
Looking back, The Rams made the right decision because they went all in and got the Lombardi and Stafford played unreal clutch ball. Could Goff done that with that roster and Kupp? Possibly. No one can honestly say with 100% certainty, though everyone has an opinion of course. We are 100% certain that we did get that Lombardi with Stafford however, and that justifies the trade.
The Lions look poised to have a multi year run. Can Goff raise his game another notch in the playoffs and get a few rings?
We shall see.
Hopefully we are not in QB hell after Stafford retires.
