There reasons they signed Baker.

1. They finally agreed with me a year later that Wolford is a JAG....plain and simple he sucks.

2. They will offer him a vet minimum one year deal next year to be Stafford's backup. If he leaves like he probably will then the Rams probably get a comp pick. Baker can stay as a backup or move on. This might be his best chance to get a ring....as a backup.

3. Wolford gets released and Perkins will get resigned as a ERA. Baker isn't a starting QB but he can be a serviceable backup. Regardless he's better than Wolford...which isn't saying a lot.

4. I think they realize that regardless of Stafford's decision they will be QB shopping either next year or in 2024. If Baker stays he's a backup. Regardless even if they draft a QB. If they are looking for a bridge QB Baker isn't it.

If Baker is smart he will get his head out of his ass and take advantage of being behind a future HOF QB who can teach him all he needs to know about reading defenses. He can resuscitate his career here if he does. Everywhere he's gone he was supposed to be "the man". Now he has an opportunity to learn what he really needs to know. If he doesn't take the opportunity then he is the bust that he is right now.

I look at it this way. Baker is nothing more than Wolford with a stronger arm. Wolford after all these years struggles to read.

Not a fan. Baker is like Taco Bell. Good for college but I have higher expectations and tastes (not to mention money) now that I’m older.

Then again, the Rams QB room is horrible right now. Beggars can’t be choosers. At least he’s cheap. I’m keeping an open mind.

NGL to you all. I'm high as duck and I am still stunned about getting Baker Mayfield is on the Rams. It feels like we're in a space-time warp or something

You keep talking about Carolina. I happen to think McVay is a far better coach than anything they have in Carolina.

Baker wasn't a problem in Carolina. By all accounts, he was a good, supportive teammate and accepted the backup role with grace.
Of course he accepts the backup role. That's why baker reuested a release. So he could be a backup on another team. Wait, what?

Look, if the rams are in contention then OK, but playoffs are gone so we are playing for next year and what is the benefit of baker in that context.

He's not starting. Don't we want a backup that has starter potential?

"If baker is smart" I'll leave it at that

No, they mutually agreed upon his release because he was going to be the third-string QB. Instead of trying to push some dishonest narrative, listen to what his actual teammates have to say:
"What Baker is having to deal with ... being healthy and a backup, is not an easy thing,'' veteran long-snapper JJ Jansen said as he recalled Mayfield's support of Pineiro. "When I tell you he's been as good of a leader as we've had on this team, going through everything that he's gone through, he's been as good as anybody on the team.''
* * *
"The perception of him that's out there, especially with what was coming out of Cleveland, wasn't who he is,'' Stanton said. "There's not really much you can do if you respond to some of the comments that were said about him being immature or a bad teammate.

"People love being his teammate, and that's the true measure of who he is.''
* * *
"There's an element to Baker that he likes to poke and prod with you guys in the media,'' Jansen said. "He's been nothing but a great teammate here.''

That's why those close to Mayfield believe he'll survive this fall from stardom if put in the right situation, which won't be with Carolina. As much as team officials have been impressed by Mayfield's professionalism as the backup, they don't look at him as the long-term solution.

Good point. The former #1 overall pick who started, led his team to the playoffs, and posted 26 TDs to 8 Ints back in 2020 doesn't have starter potential. Let's keep going with Perkins and Wolford. :eyeroll:

Wow. Been busy and ignoring NFL news and what happens? Rams luck into a QB. What an excellent turn of events.

I like my signal callers to be cocky bastards, and Baker's that for sure. He is every bit a reclamation, but he is talented and fits McVay. This is a great pickup given how shit our depth has played at the position, but most importantly it is a QB who may grow into a starter as Stafford phases out in a year or so.

He spent the preseason in a sister strain of the WCO so I'd imagine he is a go as soon as he gets protection calls down. This could end up being a windfall for us got my fingers crossed.

Oh, the 3rd string qb on a shitty team. Why didn't you say so in the first place. Of course we should sign him. My bad. How about we learn from Carolinas Mistake.

And this talk about not being a long term solution. We're not in a playoff hunt here. If so, then maybe. But he's not here in 2023 so what's the point.

Is this an example of your Crystal Ball working overtime ?
Well, you tell me. Is he starting over Stafford. Is he alright being a backup when he just requested a release because he did t want to be a backup. Is he actually better than wolford? He's regressed over the past 3 years but has the same attitude. This is the guy who couldn't make obj work, yet the rams did. He's a bust, people. Move on.

I was obviously all-in on this from the second he was released, for the many reasons I've argued here.

But in looking over his past film just now, he has two things that are REALLY intriguing that stood out. Elusiveness in the pocket ('cuz we need that with early pressure), then a cannon that is accurate on long balls.

He may not be great at reads and he won't make the HOF, but I would love to have a QB like a Williams or DTR that can make their own pocket and chuck it downfield when needed.

Wolfy and Perkins were a snoozefest.

Here's my prediction: less than 225 yards per game. More turnovers than tds. Creative excuses from baker fams. Gone next year.

Totally disagree. There is absolutely no downside to this.

I just looked it up. It was rated The Easiest Decision Ever Made by Capitol One and they've already signed Mayfield for their next TV spot.
