On whiners situation: Lynch is no Snead.
(I smack myself hard for even mentioning them in the same sentence.)

On Stafford trade: Holmes accepting Goff was huge.

Yeah, I personally liked Mac Jones better than all of the QBs besides Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson. But I know jack about player evaluation, don't watch a lot of college football, and so I based that only on a handful of highlights that I saw. But I couldn't understand why Niner fans were so anti-Jones and were so elated that they took Lance. Can only assume they fell in love with Lance's athleticism and saw a much higher ceiling. But he also has a much lower floor and I hope -- and expect -- he'll end up closer to the floor than the ceiling.

Actually... Here's what The Sporting News reported:

On a recent episode of The Ringer's "Flying Coach" podcast, Shanahan explained just how close the 49ers were to making a move for the former Lions quarterback on the night that he landed in a Rams uniform.

"You don't want to get me started, dude. That was frustrating. I was actually in Cabo, I was watching it all. I had never studied Stafford that hard. I remember looking through it and everyone was telling me it was a possibility. Stafford's the man, I studied him hard coming out of college, and we always used to play against him, so you know how good he is. But to know he might be available, and then spend two weeks really watching him, Sean? Yeah. He's better than I had realized. He was the man, and he's underrated to me. …
I was trying to get involved in it. Someone who had knowledge on the situation — I was talking to (Tom) Condon and everyone to find out when it was happening. I remember on Saturday, I was so stressed out, and finally we talked to someone and it was like 7 at night, and they were like, "No, nothing's happening at the earliest till tomorrow. So you can finish your night." So I'm like, "All right, I'm done." Put my phone down, talk to Mandy, "Let's go out to dinner, let's have some drinks."
A half an hour later, a buddy of mine calls me, he's like, "I'm just telling you, if you want Stafford, you need to get ahold of him right now." And I'm like, "What do you mean? We just talked to people, I can sleep on this, we'll talk to 'em tomorrow." "I'm just telling you, you need to talk to him right now." And I knew it, and I turned on my phone, and it was all over. It wasn't fun."

And actually... The Niners could have out bid us had they wanted to since they held the 2021 #3 pick they used on Trey Lance and had a starting qb they could have unloaded. And the Niners had to have known they were not getting Rodgers or Watson (at that time) or Stafford for two second round picks. They were just too slow to act when it counted.
The Rams had inside info. It is obvious. They also had someone giving out misleading info from the Detroit side to be able to mislead Shannahan. What is also interesting is that while it also looks like the Cabo destination seems popular for NFL players and coaches, the Rams made contact with Stafford which made a big difference and Shanny just studied film and made phone calls.

Many evaluators and fans have been enamored with athleticism. The Rams of the past for one. The potential seems to out weigh production and intelligence.

Couple of things.

1) How are ya? Hope you and the family are well. Looks like a super fun game tonight!

2) I really don't care what Kyle says because I was saying what STAFFORD said. He was surprised at the LA trade because he was ON HIS WAY to Carolina when he got the information. I don't recall if he was packing to go to the airport or actually on his way to the airport when he found out about the Rams deal. Carolina confirmed that they thought they had a deal.

SF MAY have upped their offer, but we'll never know. It doesn't matter what ammo they had, it matters what they offered and when and the 9er FO hadn't been deep in the trade talks, apparently, because if they were, they'd have known that Carolina was about to finalize the trade and either made another offer or moved on.

Sounds like Kyle and the FO weren't on the same page and that works just fine for me.

Could they have outbid us? I dunno. Yeah, that #3 pick was there, but they didn't offer it. We also don't know how Brad Holmes viewed Garapollo as opposed to Goff. Goff may have held a much better trade weight than Garapollo due to not being injured.

The bottom line is we have Stafford and they paid more for Trey Lance by a bunch than we did for Stafford and unless Lance makes a massive jump in year 2, they're gonna be crippled at the position for years now... and that works fine for me.

That's interesting.

They have had season ticket issues, so if they evaluated them as the same, maybe one's popularity with the fan base was the final determinant (not that anyone would ever cop to that...)

Yep they were definitely anti Jones. Fans love them some highlight play type QBs and teams love upside so it was a perfect marriage. May Jones continue to shit on the 9ers for passing on him too. :fistbump1:

Off season Ramble:

Which one of you were on the Lance Bus? Just get your 40whiner shit and get out!

I think I'll wait a couple of years to see actual games because I remember the talk about Patrick Mahomes at practice....too much arm, lots of INTs........yeah.

Way too early to say that Lance is a bust. We can only hope right now.

Please, Lance is just getting started plus I remember all the pundits who spoke at nauseum about how inaccurate both Josh Allen (Bills) & Lamar Jackson (Ravens) both were and now they are in the upper echelon of signal callers.

Again, Kyle Shanahan is one of the best at coaching up Quarterbacks, quite frankly, IMHO, he's the best in the NFL, so let's pump the brakes here as many of us want the 49ers to struggle, but let's give the kid a break here with his first OTA's.

I’d be excited if the Rams drafted Lance, great athlete, rocket for an arm & only 20 years old, plus I would trust our scouts, GM & Head Coach. I guarantee you this, 49er fans were elated they took Lance over Jones.

Lol how is this even a thread? After one week of OTAs? My god.

Seems like a lot of people are trying to will this into existence. News flash, the kid is gonna be good. Kyle Shannahan beats us with Nick fucking Mullins.

Methinks this kid may be wind up being a problem for the Rams for years to come.

Going to stick with my previous prediction and I’ll go with my the odds as Ive made in the teens in betting this year so far.

How many QB’s have come from D2 to dominate not to mention be a ‘good’ QB?

Very little.

my bet remains bust

You mean he’s like that Jake Ellenbooger or whatever it is?

If it does take 7 years to develop it may not be in a whiner uniform. I'll be surprised if they pick up his 5th year option next offseason.

My dream scenario is they let him walk after next season and he becomes an all pro for an AFC team.

The problem is as outsiders is that we don't know the background. Goff was viewed as a bust by many in LA but he's proven himself to be the tier one talent they thought he was when drafted. It was simply a matter of scheme fit and a coach willing to develop him instead of make things impossibly hard as McVay did for Goff.

Fast forward to his time in Detroit and he's in a system that plays to his strengths, with a coaching staff that has taken the time to develop him. Now he was a top 10 QB last year. So why is this relevant? Because there could be a similar situation in SF. Is Lance the bust or is this a coaching failure, i.e. a staff that will not change their offense to play to his strength's? Lance has physical talents, but are they the right ones that make him a fit for the 49er offense? Perhaps not. The best thing that could happen to Lance is to be traded.

I will reserve judgement on Lance until he burns through a second set of coaches.

The entirety of the Goff experience is applicable now to the Rams. I've long felt that the Rams would draft their next QB1 but after further reflection I don't think that will be the case. The Rams have targeted another vet which is why they cleared so much cap space. People think it's Cousins but I don't think so. His age is a big inhibiting factor. Also even with a good team around him he's not worth the level of contract he will eventually expect.

But back to Lance, I think it's time for both the Niners and Lance to move on from each other. I don't necessarily view Lance as a bust as much as being a poor fit for the Niner's offense. Lance was a FO pick not necessarily Shanahan's pick in much the same way as Goff was Snead's pick not McVay's. Lance would do much better in AZ with Gannon's offense.

The SAD thing is ?? Well not SAD,
NFL - fans will see that a top pick
can become an All Pro after 5seasins,or even after the 5th year isn’t picked up as a Top QB.

Examples will be Tampa’s QB & the NINER’s . There is another QB who is Rams Fans knew his WR’s in college that proved that last season & is being counted on in 2023(beyond) in Gino. Not Testavarde either who also played for the J.E.T.S.!!

To each his own.I’ll make that call. Especially being an SC fan & think if Williams will be all that his rookie season? Darnell is not that talented & Williams might be that next Rookie sensation.

If he's currently behind Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold on the depth chart, they probably need to trade the young man and give him a chance somewhere else.

Disagree. You spent 3 first round picks for him and by golly, he needs to start until he proves he can't get the job done. :sunglasses:

If Brock Purdy becomes an all pro and leads them to a Super Bowl victory the discussion becomes superfluous. However, @Corbin appears to have been right about Trey Lance to this point, but 49er are still winning with somebody else and that is what matters.

I want them to lose and if they lose I don't care if they have the second coming of Dan Marino as long as the 49ers lose and the Rams kick their ass repeatedly.

they haven't won shit, that's the point.

either of those wasted 3 1st rounders may have been the tipping point for them to win it all. or maybe wouldn't have made a difference but we'll never know. instead they used them on a useless qb that wouldn't be ready for awhile for a team ready to compete.
