Rams-49ers bidding war drove up price for Christian McCaffrey

My thoughts as well. It is time for Snead to utilize the ultra-low $$$ salary cap hit draft to totally redesign & resupply McVay's RB room for the next half decade. The draft is the route I would strongly suggest.

One player will not make a big difference in the overall scheme of things with this current team.

I predicted this team would go 10-7 back in August here in ROD. Since that time this team has seen a heavy rash of injuries to over a dozen starters. Not that unusual in the NFL. Could you be expecting far too much here from this Rams team going hard for a trade?

I am not concerned about the selection that the Lions get in this upcoming draft. But I am concerned about what future draft assets the Rams can muster up to refurbish this team & fill the many holes & lack of talent in the units currently.

This 2022 roster is not the 2021 roster by a far margin where 1 or 2 players can seriously improve your team to the championship arena. Getting into a bidding war with 31 other teams will cost this team highly in draft capital or talented players most all the time the team will end up on the short end of the deal.

The Ram Org did everything possible to field a competitive team this season but some things are just out of their control like injuries or players being disgruntled like Cam Akers. The Org needs to take all these hits and play the best with what you got. Coaches must coach up these younger less talented players.

The Rams coaches need to be very busy this week coaching up whats already here & not waiting to be saved by one player elsewhere!

I get planning for the future but sadly AD Kupp Staff Ramsey ARob etc. won't be here forever they here now and not exactly spring chickens they still in their prime so unless you plan a sell off one of them a pick or two won't make a difference. Need to keep adding around them or sell assets and get picks can't be stuck in limbo land. That's where franchises go to die.

Love that the Rams forced the 69ers to up their trade offer. And influenced them that keeping CMC away from the Rams was a priority despite them getting their RB1 back in a couple weeks. CMC would have been fun short term but long term it would have crippled the Rams draft next year for an RB who has a recent history of multiple injuries.
Totally agree. I get that CMC is a talent but the Whiners have always found good RBs for their system and Eli Mitchell is no slouch. In fact, he's a better powerback than McCaffrey. As I said earlier, they will look really stupid if they don't win it all.

This could have been more about keeping him away from the Rams.

I have no issues in 2023 with Snead signing a Free Agent RB.

I do have issues with signing a 2023 UFA RB that will cause harm to the Rams future compensatory draft selection awards.

If Snead/McVay desires a couple of experienced RB's in the stable then resign FA's Brown & Rivers when the free agency is over & they will not impact our Compensatory Selections.

I also prefer to get a few OL'ers on day two of the draft however the Ram top need is a pass rusher.
If that RB is an upgrade over what we've had (example Josh Jacobs) I'd say fuck those comp picks lol. We need tough running at that position and I wouldn't rely solely on the draft to provide that. Getting a game changing back in the draft is a crap shoot since we are competing with all the other teams but should still be looked at and added if we see one we want. I agree we need an edge but that may or may not be a big need if we trade for one or get one during FA either. Regardless, I'm always stoked to see what direction we take being the crazed fan that I am.

While I agree with the sentiments above about the Rams need to make moves, and push the envelope because of the current window, I am cautioned by the reality that the Rams do not have much trade capital; and that limits what can be done.

That's fair too. It's a predicament in a way a fork in the road but if you plan on holding on to those players you probably have to do what you can or you could rebuild on the fly and probably get ple picks for so.lme of them. Can't be in between though as a franchise.

Why do I get the feeling, "acquire an Edge rusher" will meet the same end as "draft an OL early" the past few years?
Mostly because the parity is harder to define who is a seller and who is a buyer. Just not enough options to buy from and to many buyers to compete with.

I'm in the same agreement, I would enjoy us trading for some stud that'll help us now but the reality is that we've blown most of our load to win the super bowl last season. I don't mind trading draft capital every year but I also want to still have enough of a draft to replenish the roster as needed in offseason.

With our health issues and a lot of players coming back I'd be more inclined to stay pat this season and see if we can't get some injury luck rest of way and coach up what we have and see if we can't put together a run. If we can't we get to next season and suddenly have premium picks to make moves as needed and have a lot of experience invested in the roster from this season.

While I agree that 1 or maybe even 2 added players will not necessarily get us to the Super Bowl this year, I still might not allow that to get in the way of building for the future, not this time around. Using a 2023 6'th round pick to trade for a RB like D'Ernest Johnson isn't going to have a seriously adverse affect on our future compensatory picks, although on the other hand someone like Edge Brian Burns would have a big impact. Still, Burns, imo, is one of those guys whose long term value to a team might be measurable as a quality 'franchise' type player that only comes around rarely, ... I'm not saying he will be an Aaron Donald, but at 24 years of age and his history of success, he might be the next best thing. With all our other needs and considering where we will be drafting, we likely won't find an Edge rusher of his caliber any time soon. Even with this I don't sacrifice our high 2023 draft picks for him or anyone else, our need for an OL fix is that great, and using late round picks isn't going to get the job done. Our very good but aging QB requires an OL that not only is capable of protecting him, but can deliver a run game that will extend his career beyond becoming a one trick pony. For these reasons I would make a huge offer for Burns which included not only our 2024 #1 and #2 draft picks, but I'd also salt that offer with a few impactful players that Carolina might make good use of. Of course, Burns may not be had at any price, but knowing we gave it our best shot would please me way more than our trying & losing Christian McCaffrey to the 9'ers. jmo.

Weirdness of 2022 season has complicated trade market for Rams

There seem to be more “buyers” rather than “sellers” this year in the NFL

If I had to use a single word to describe the NFL in 2022, the first thing that comes to mind is “weird”.

It’s weird that the New York Giants possess one of the best records in football at 6-1. Also in the NFC East, The Philadelphia Eagles have taken a major step forward and seem like the best overall team in the league. The Dallas Cowboys should have been out of contention when star QB Dak Prescott went down with an injury in Week 1, but Cooper Rush kept them afloat with a 4-1 record during his replacement stint.

Teams that were expected to contend for the top stop in the NFC are middling and clinging to relevancy - including the Los Angeles Rams.

Last year’s Super Bowl winners have limped to a 3-3 record, and their Week 7 bye seems to have come at just the right time. They face a showdown this week against the San Francisco 49ers that will tell us exactly who they are.

The Green Bay Packers lack offensive firepower - and Aaron Rodgers is growing more frustrated by the week. The Green Bay defense was supposed to be good enough to keep them in games while the offense worked through its growing pains, but they just seem like a mess at 3-4.

Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers should be a lot better than they are right now (also at 3-4), and there’s no one weakness you can really point to as to why the Bucs are struggling. They don’t have a catastrophic failure on the offensive line like the Rams or a lack of talent in the receiving corps like the Packers. Tampa Bay’s roster is filled with players who have shown better production in the past than what they are getting out of them right now, but for how long will that continue?

The AFC conference is just as hotly competitive, even despite slower than expected starts from teams like the Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders, and others.

There are very few teams that seem unfit to compete in 2022, aside from maybe the tanking Carolina Panthers and the outright bad Houston Texans. Even the 1-5 Detroit Lions have the overall talent to make things interesting at some point this year, and they will be dangerous out of the gates in 2023.

It’s just weird that seven weeks in we still aren’t sure who’s good and who’s not - and even teams with losing records are only a couple games back from first place and feel they can turn things around this year.

And that complicates the trade market for the middling or good teams who feel a star player could put them over the top - which is where the Rams find themselves.

LA planned even as far back as this offseason to be active at the trade deadline in order to supplement their pass rush next to Aaron Donald and opposite Leonard Floyd, but they probably did not expect to find their options so limited.

If the Panthers and Texans are the only teams truly out of contention, then the realistic pass rushers in the Rams’ sights were probably Brian Burns and Jonathan Greenard. But Houston recently placed Greenard on IR with an ankle injury, and Carolina reportedly rejected an offer of two first round draft picks in exchange for Burns.

Los Angeles could turn their focus to someone like Bradley Chubb, who’s a free agent on a Broncos team that is devoid of draft capital and salary cap space after making a heavy investment in their struggling quarterback, Russell Wilson. Denver has a breadth of younger pass rushers, so Chubb is somewhat expendable - but as a player Chubb is a step down from the pass rushing prowess of someone like Burns.

As the Rams look down the gauntlet of the signal callers they’ll face over the second half of the season - Tom Brady, Kyler Murray, Patrick Mahomes, Geno Smith (twice), Derek Carr, Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, and Justin Herbert - they probably feel pressure to make a move.

The question is where do you turn when the weirdness and parity of the NFL in 2022 hasn’t created a bottom tier of teams ready to sell off their assets and turn towards the future. As a result, the Rams face a complicated trade market and could find it difficult to find a partner.

If LA is compelled to improve over the second half of the season, the pressure on general manager Les Snead is immense and building. Will he be able to make a move?
