So then - What exactly is the definition of overpaying? It seems to be some vague notion bandied about by those on the outside. Honestly. He could go in and dick around, sour relationships by playing low ball, lose out on important deals, and would that qualify as not getting fleeced?

I'm not arguing with you here. I agree with how you framed this. But what defines things like "overpay", "good deal", etc...? IMO, it's the bottom line. How is what he is doing affecting the success of this team? I just don't think anyone outside of the negotiation can say what is truly an overpay. All we can see is if the deal worked to benefit our team.
Not being privy to the negotiation or the market, the only idea of overpaying that makes sense to me is what each individual personally believes the most they would have given up for said player.

In other words, the Rams should have offered blank compensation and if they didn't take it, then no deal.

Now my guess is the "no deal" part would have been the outcome for most deals. But since we will never know, we can all stay on our high horses thinking we know better with our limited information.

I had us taking a CB with pick 29, so trading for an established, former 1st rounder, multi-year all-pro, is fantastic business

As people have said, there is every chance we will end up with a 3rd round compensatory pick in 2027 to offset the draft pick.

Free Agency is next. Do we still have the money to sign one more difference-maker before the draft, as well as resign some of our own players?

My only concern is that I was hoping we would trade some of our draft capital for another 1st round pick next year to address QB. They obviously have plans, so it will be fascinating to see whether we are any closer to understanding it after the 1st round of the draft

Snead was sent in to get McDuffie. Mission accomplished.
I understood it came down to the Rams and Giants. I doubt the Giants were offering their R1.5 pick so guess their offer included their R2.37 pick + an assortment of other picks. The Rams R1.29 pick is close to a R2 pick so they probably needed to match the Giants assortment of other picks to win the trade.
All very speculative at best.

That’s probably what the NYG were offering and it is better than the Rams (two 2nds or even just 29). The giants 2nd round is less than 10 picks away from 29. Their 2nd next year will be top 10 ish (say 37-45). While our 3rd is gonna be around 95. Even if they offered a 3rd next year, it’s still much earlier.

The 5th and 6th round picks are throw away with very little value. So it’s really just two picks - 29 and next years 3rd.
The 5th is where we got Nacua and McClendon. Both playing great on rookie deals. Lake was a 6th round pick. Those aren't throw away picks.

I would have rather given up 2 2nds, than a 1st and 3rd.

Chiefs would have probably taken it. They needed cap space.
The Rams 2nd is very late in the round (61st overall); and their 2027 second also projects to be late in the round.

Other teams would have beaten that value.

For example, it’s being reported that the Giants were competing with the Rams for McDuffie; and were offering a package that started with their 2nd rounder which is in the mid-30s. That would have easily beaten two seconds from the Rams.

Dont teams usually use guaranteed money and back load contracts so the first two or three years are significantly less than 30 mil a year?
There's basically 2 parts to a contract
1) The average annual value ex 3 year 90 mill contract is 30 mill per
2) The actual cash the player gets, so the player above may see more than that in his "take home" but cap wise it looks different
So when players want to get new deals, the AAV is the debate point, the cash works itself out

Do tell. Who are these "neutral observers"? And I don't have any inside information like you, but I suspect there was something else behind the Jones deal and there was a GTFO involved.
Well, for example, these guys in the video below. They mention Bill Barnwell was anticipating this trade and thought it would be McDuffie and a Chief's 5th rounder for the Rams' 29th. Parkins says it was more than he himself expected. I'd say they're neutral observers, and sports is their life. They also said it was a fantastic move for the Rams. And I agree with all of that.

So, yeah, I happen to agree with them. I love the move and just think it was an overpay. No big deal -- I'm elated with McDuffie.

As for the Jones deal, was ANYBODY here expecting they'd get a measly late round draft swap two years into the future? We can make all kinds of guesses as to WHY that was, but few will claim they were expecting this kind of return.

Can we all just agree that the Rams just got a whole lot better in order to make a run for the Super Bowl before free agency and the draft even started. Don't be surprised to see Snead move down 5 or 6 spots in the first round and add an additional 3rd pick along with picking up the WR he wants.

I think more that it is hard to equate when certain individuals say that Les constantly gets fleeced or overpays and under receives in the same breath they say they love him as a GM. I mean... What is it? He gets taken advantage of in his MAIN job, yet he is really good at his job? I suppose it's not possible that he actually knows his job and knows the values and what a deal will take before he picks up the phone? I suppose it's not possible that he knows more about negotiating deals in the NFL than a few fans on a sports forum? And I suppose he only gets these players that have paid big dividends and that we all appreciate by bending over and taking it from GMs most of us and the league would deem inferior?

Sorry man. It's not that I feel personally insulted. It's that I don't get how some will say they really like him as our GM - yet insinuate he is really bad at one of his main functions of his job. It makes no sense. I can see questioning a trade or deal here and there. But saying that he consistently gets out dueled at the negotiating table is kind of silly for any of us to say while sitting behind a keyboard. I mean, this kind of thinking would also say that KD and Stan are fools who don't understand what they are doing in business. It's all kind of insane.

Yes -- one of the main functions of Les's job is to acquire players. And he's acquired some excellent ones -- Stafford, Ramsey, McDuffie, Miller. And in each case, it was my opinion -- and that of many others -- that he overpaid for those players. I remember the day the Stafford trade went down and people were shocked at how much was given up for him. Does that mean I wouldn't make the trade all over again if I could go back in time? No, of course not. Does that mean that I must believe Les sucks at his job? Is it really a choice of "he's very good" or "he sucks" with no room in the middle?

A philosophy that me and my powerlifting buddies lived by when I was competing is that "second place is first loser".

So, did you and your friends steal this from Ricky Bobby ... or ... did he steal it from you?

The numbering system (or whatever the hell its called) to work out pick/trade value this trade isn't out of line really.
Whether a trade is an over pay or not depends on results.....so, we will have to wait and see.
If the Rams win a Super Bowl in the next year or two and McDuffie plays a big role, then it is a great trade.
The Rams had two 5's and 6's before the trade so the Rams still have a full, normal compliment of picks this year.
