I hope we keep McVay for another twenty years. He turned us from a perennial laughingstock to a Super Bowl contender. He brought in amazing coaches. He has never had a season that is worse than 9-7 (a winning season) - and given the schedule ahead of us, he'll probably go 12-4.

As for the mistakes, every coach makes mistakes. Fucking Lombardi made mistakes. McVay's a top two coach (Reid is ahead of him; fuck Bellicheat, he's not in the conversation), and is still the youngest coach in the league.

I hope to holy fate he retires with us after a Rams dynasty.

I really wanted to beat the Whiners.

But after wondering why McVay stopped bootlegging Goff after it was so successful, and stopped running Akers after he owned the only good drive on offense, it dawned on me.

He saw the NFL making the Broncos play the Saints with no QB, looked at our remaining schedule vs theirs, and decided 1st seed was not realistic. Without the bye for winning the NFCW, he’d rather have the 5 seed and go play the NFCE champ.

Next level thinking Sean.

Only the team with the best record in the NFC gets a bye now.
No other bye's in the NFC.

McVay is the man

This dude will get us where we need to be. In many ways he already has.
Look what he has done to our expectations?!! Pretty amazing.

Clock management.
Why are you calling timeouts on the 9ers last drive?
Why are you giving them MORE plays? They needed every one.

Heck, we coulda just run the ball 3 times in a row on our last drive and forced more of their TOs.

what is it with the complaining about timeouts? the whiners had 3 timeouts in their pocket. they could have done anything they wanted and still bled the clock to 1 second. the only way the rams win was to stop them, which they couldn't do.

Coach makes it pretty clear that Goff is still very much his guy. Glad to catch no hint of any of issue in their relationship.

I disagree. Shanahan was not calling time out on 3rd and short when McVay called a time out. That could have run down the clock to 20 seconds or so. Then on 4th down they would have gotten 1 yard for the first with about 12 seconds left.

They would have had time for about 1 more play.

I think they would have gotten to the 35 yard line after that with a 52 yard field goal attempt.

I like our chances much more with that than a 45 yard one (40 after Ramsey tried to time the snap).

The point of calling TOs was for our defense to get the stop. Our defense failed to do that. Kudos to Shanahan. He had the balls to go for it on 4th down.

there was 40 secs left when we called the timeout... it takes about 2-3 secs to run short run plays or short pass plays. One play in 12 secs with all their timeouts? uhh noo. at least 2 maybe even 3 plays with all their timeouts.

the 49ners didnt care if the clock ran because they could stop it as they had all their timeouts. They wanted the clock to run to under 20 seconds at least... maybe more - that way there would be no time left when they kicked a FG. After they got the 4th down conversion they could do that anyway.

Mcvay calling timeouts had Zero impact on their FG.

Listen, I love coach McVay and the culture he's brought to our organization. He's the right guy for the job and I have absolutely no doubt about that. With that being said I think that there is a certain level of distrust he has in Goff to properly run this offense now. The Goff-McVay combo in years 1 and 2 were lighting the league on fire. We were a different team back then, I don't think anyone can argue that. But what I think we're starting to see is a coach/QB combo where the coach has tried giving the QB the keys to the offense and he just isn't delivering. I like to bitch about the play calling and it's easy to point the finger at McVay but I honestly think there's a disconnect between him and Goff - I truly believe it falls more on Goff and the offense for lack of execution. McVay goes into a conservative style of offense, we bitch, and more often than not we lose. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I wish we were in a position to bring another QB in just to see if Goff really is the issue but we aren't. We've got the kid for at least another 2 years, hopefully we bring someone in who starts working on the mental part of Goff's game. And that's on McVay to ensure we do.

Was it the drive for the tying FG that we stopped them on 3rd and long, but for some reason we called a totally unnecessary TO that nullified the stop, which they then converted on their way to beating us?

I don't think that was a huge mistake by McVay in and of itself, it was kinda bad luck... but regardless I don't know what good reason that TO served.

True. I was stating (tongue in cheek) that he knew that with the cake schedule for NO they would never make #1 seed, so since there would be no bye by winning NFCW, why not just take the #5 seed and play NFCE winner instead of Seattle or TB...

In any event, clearly the Rams would rather win and this was just a yoke.
