From Ben Levine's column:

Today’s agreement all but assures that Simpson will now warm the bench for at least his first two professional seasons.

Back to me now. This is exactly what I was hoping for in Drafting Simpson. The "down the road" play.

Even if its 3 years he sits, FINE.

Though my personal prediction is Simpson starts 2028 Season.
Who's Ben Levine?

I definitely need someone to evocation to me like I’m 5 what the contract strategy is. Like why have we been year to year for 3 years now?

Is it so we can continue to add void years and keep giving him signing bonuses?

Or what if the Rams go 20-0, Stafford throws 60 TDs (including playoffs), and wins 2 more MVPs (reg season and SB) and wants a serious pay raise for next year? You're right, a lot can happen before next year when we haven't even gotten to camp this year.
I’m in for all of it.

As always, contracts are a bit confusing...

So is he making "only" 40M in 2026, but then 55M in 2027?

If so, that would be a pretty damn big incentive to play 2 more years (instead of calling it quits after 2026 season).

Funny how he signs the deal and the talk in the thread turns to him retiring at any moment. Geez enjoy the fact the reigning MVP is playing this year and the team is one of the few favorites to win the Super Bowl.
My comment about retiring was in response to a post, citing a quote, where a commentator said the extension guarantees Simpson doesn't play until 2028. I just said nothing is guaranteed. He could easily retire under various circumstances after this season.

Hey, he easily could play great like Rodgers & Brady did in their late 30's and then still wants to play into his 40's. It just seems that he has already contemplated retirement with this yr to yr thing so that might not be likley for him.

Rodgers is a bachelor, while Brady refusing to retire may have led to him becoming a bachelor. With Stafford's wife & young kids, he likley is more on a clock to retire and not play into his 40's. Not to mention his back and other injury concerns. He is at the age where an Achilles can go as well as the back etc...

Depends how it's structured. He probably got a signing bonus and more money up front. The accounting as to how the cap hits are handled each year do not really affect his pocketbook.

They have no details yet. They're just guessing.

Now that the Lakers got swept, the City of Angels are counting on the Rams to bring home the glory. Stafford can make that happen. What a time to be a Rams fan! 49's fans and Seachicken fans are not happy knowing the next two years are going to be hell.

He could be after a few records before he quits. Two seasons above 4,000 yards (which is around his average) puts him 3rd all time, behind Brees and Brady. He needs 8 4th Quarter comebacks to overtake Brady for 1st. He needs 13 more game winning drives to overtake Brady for 1st. Those are all more than possible if he plays 2 to 3 more seasons relatively injury free

And of course, it’s not uncommon for QBs of his stature to win more than one Super Bowl, often including one later in their career

How long Stafford plays will depend on his health, whether he’s on a Super Bowl caliber team and how much these potential records mean to him in terms of his legacy.

If so, maybe I am a buyer at 3 more years irrespective of whether we manage to repeat in Sofi

This is what McVay meant by Matt has "earned the right" - Stafford can't commit to a set amount of time, and whether it's him or the Rams, somebody doesn't want a long contract because of that. He wants to go year to year and the obvious reason is, he may want to retire at any point, so let's just revisit it each year.

But I think the unique part about this is, he's gotten better each year. And he was pretty underpaid - so I'm also guessing it was to make sure he could go from 40-ish mil to 55 mil which his play warranted, obviously

Had to look it up:
Pro Football Focus (PFF) defines a "Big Time Throw" (BTT) as a pass with excellent ball location and timing, generally thrown further down the field and/or into a tighter window. It essentially captures throws at the highest end of both difficulty and value.

sentially captures throws at the highest end of both difficulty and value.

2 reasons:
1) Good for the team by going year to year as they arent leaving a massive dead cap hit when he finally does hang em up
2) Good for Stafford because they arent signing a paper tiger of a contract loaded with non guaranteed money, each year lands him a signing bonus and guaranteed salary
What we have here is the ultimate rarity in sports, 2 sides in lock step with one another to make sure both sides are happy and protected
This is a true partnership that should be embraced not questioned
