And this is why the league will have difficultly using 13 going forward.

We were able to run a decent amount of our 11 personnel plays (we didn't need to install all new stuff) out of 13 with this group.

Most teams will not.
Can you explain this? I am confused. Maybe they have 13 personnel on the field, but with the flexibility of the tight-ends, they line up in a 11 personnel formation? I'm interested in understanding this approach which is why I am asking.

Do I wish they woulda used their first pick on a receiver? Yeah. Makai Lemon woulda been a good fit at WR3 and then WR2 the following years. Simpson's not likely to see the field till 2028. Or even later.

But here's the thing. They drafted an athletic tight end with their next pick. They have another athletic tight end in Ferguson. Parkinson is no slouch athletically. Higbee can make some nice catches down the field.

They use 13 personnel more than anyone. Heck, they can make it look like 11 personnel with the ability of those tight ends. So maybe a WR3 isn't a big deal this year. And they can always look for one in next year's draft.
I wasn't particularly high on Lemon, but I would have preferred any of the players projected in that range who have starting potential over Simpson, and then taking one of the other QB dev projects thereafter.

That said, I am really excited to see Simpson in preseason. I think he's going to enrich our experience in those otherwise meaningless games, and our depth weapons should get a ton of good work with him duelling with Bennett for the backup role. I expect Simpson to win that, as well, because he simply has a much better toolbox than Bennett. He's bigger, has a better arm, has a window ahead with years of cheap team control, and will surely grow into that QB2 role as we go forward on top of that. Also it does feel good to have another young QB on the roster.

But I'm also not going to rule out Bennett because he's got a history of exceeding expectation. Certainly he has a chance and the better he plays the better work our depth gets in preparation for the season.

As to TE how many years have we wanted to see the Rams find a true stud at the position. It is undoubtedly the Rams organization's worst position historically speaking. We have such a strong history with other positions in comparison. So for them to add Ferguson and now Klare and the Rams to be leading the charge with TE heavy sets is incredible. We're living in the best of times here.

I think in 12 they could certainly run the same plays because you'd have a TE on the inline and another handling the slot role, with Puka and Davante outside. Klare will be an instant impact possibility in the slot, and Ferg going into year two should be competing with him in that role, so I think it's safe to say it's covered with size and consistency.

If you take either of those top two wideouts off the field, though, for 13... Then you have some dropoff in terms of running those standard Rams plays. But it opens up other things like run game options and multiple matchup problems for the defense where they're at serious disadvantage with size.

Good news all around. I thought and still think Stafford has more in the tank. It's great when players want to play for your head coach and organization. The Rams will not be drafting early in round #1 anytime soon. They got their future QB learning from the MVP QB.

Let's go Rams!!!!!

Yeah, no prob. Basically, I'm conflating personnel and formation/plays run from them. This happens in the media and stuff - part of the reason why is we have so many hybrid players in todays NFL (think move TEs who are glorified slot WRs).

For this discussion it's better to think of personnel as just the type of players but it is predictive of the kinda plays you'll run.

13 personnel is three tight ends, 1 RB and a WR. Generally, a lot of plays from 13P are run from formations that have one TE lined next to a tackle and the other two TEs on his wing or offset. You tend to run running plays from this formation. The Rams will often align their TEs not only in this formation but in the typical formations they run from 11P. Think trips WR stacked near the tackle or the more traditional 11P formation of X on the boundary (Fergy split out), slot WR (Allen in the slot), a Y TE (Parkinson next to the tackle) and Z receiver (okay they didn't run this exact formation to my knowledge but I'm using it as an example as it's too complicated to describe the motion and condensed formations the Rams typically run from 11P but I think you get the drift.)

Now any team can line up in a formation like that with any personnel they want but what makes the Rams so dangerous in 13P is that they can run a lot of the same plays from these formations they would normally run with 11P. Guys like Allen and Fergy offer the athleticism to either stretch the field (Fergy) or sink their hips to get in and out of faster cutting routes (like Allen) and offer the ability to block (which a lot of TE's struggle with these days). One of the reasons we were able to pivot to 13P due to injury and not just get bogged down is that we have TEs that can run the in breaking routes from the X or Z receiver spot, out and ups, option routes.

Basically, we didn't change much from our playbook we just used the different players. Other teams with less dynamic TEs who struggle to block, or can only run an even more limited route tree then our own due to lack of athleticism just won't be able to run the breadth of plays we're able to from 13P and probably will have to run plays that require their own unique install which will bog down their offenses.

Does any of this make sense?

Who knows, maybe the Simpson signing will paradoxically give Stafford a little incentive to play an extra year.

Like when you pretend not to be interested and it piques a girl's interest.

Rams aren't in "desperate" mode anymore.

Regardless, here's hoping MS has two terrific seasons left in him.

Two points:
1 - Ferguson ran many deeper routes last year; he averaged 21 yards/catch. He is as fast as Kupp but much larger. They will split him out as a pseudo-WR whenever they want in 12 or 13.
2 - if they utilize the TEs as WRs they will get the football benefit AND save money on second contracts, as the scale for TEs is much less than WRs. With so many good young TEs playing now that may change in the near future, but not in time. This will allow the Rams to use millions more on other players.

Records are great, but it would be much easier on my heart if the Rams wins come easier than last minute drives.
Welcome to the NFL where a high percentage of games are decided on the final drive :-)

Just under 50% of games are decided in the final 2 minutes

Stafford is coming for those records, and will be stealing souls along the way

I guess in a way I NEVER thought of that. When you really think about what SEAN MCVAY is trying to do & The HEAD COACH (person) he has become. It makes SENSE to think they are doing this together.
I was (am) not a FAN of Mike Lafleur. He brought a lot to the table in a certain way,but I don’t think he was that right fit or person to push The Rams over the TOP 2 WIN it ALL !
—I think this COACHING STAFF really wants to WIN it ALL & make a LEGACY !! There are a lot of people he has in his CORNER as well HELPING out to get there.Kliff Kingsbury is a guy that is SO far ahead of where Lafluer is & Nate Scheelhaase has a better mindset for TEAM!! He isn’t one to MOVE !!
Dave Ragone is a KEY reason Stafford feels that(southern) COMFORT.

This 13 personnel is going to be SPECIAL!! I think it’s revolutionary.

IMO it’s GENIUS & I don’t think most RAMS FANS picture it that way YET !!

1.Mattew Stafford can read defenses & call just about whatever he wants out of the formation.
2.The PROTECTION it gives him during a game, especially if an O”Lineman gets hurt.
3.The less blocking plays for Puka & Adams the better.Plus it gives them a breather & mindset on that next play.
4.The RUNNING GAME !! It really wears D”s Down & who doesn’t want to POUND a little CB ?
5.. Just the Dominance of POWER!!

The point is Mattew Stafford can’t run worth CHIT.He actually did show WHEELS ,and at his age looked as FAST as EVER.Which was impressive, but still lucky to run for a 1st down.Any time you can protect him & give him the REINS to DOMINATE I think he COWBOYS UP & take The RAMS to The PROMISE LAND !!

I think his vision & health helps him see The Future Brighter. His FOCUS is on a LEGACY & FINSH STRONG & On TOP !!

Last year seeing Rogers,Rivers, & Flacco makes it look like he knows something about The NFL !!

BTW - it’s not about THE MONEY!!!

When RAM FANS talk about ALL IN !
WHERE does it start ??

Then think about 2027 contracts? There are a lot a FREE AGENTS.

As a RAMS FAN I can’t look past 2026,but I can see Stafford will be back & Ty Simpson for 3(maybe 4)under contract.

He's still a douchebag. He always presents it as if the Rams want to dump Stafford.

I was going to say, still sounds like a vague swipe at the Rams.
I kinda figured. I can't stand the douche and generally won't watch him at all. Looks like you saw what I just assumed. I'm glad I didn't waste the time.
