Tyrann Mathieu: Russell Wilson wants New York

Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu is claiming to have some inside information about Russell Wilson‘s interest in leaving the Seahawks.

Responding to our post about the Seahawks thinking Wilson wants to play elsewhere, Mathieu took to Twitter and said that he knows where Wilson really wants to play: New York.

“Russ wants New York,” Mathieu wrote. “But you ain’t heard that from T.”

But we just did hear that from T, and while it would be easy to blow this off as a late-night tweet from a player who’s in no position to know the facts, Mathieu has spoken many times of how much respect he has for Wilson. It seems unlikely that Mathieu would go off half-cocked about a player he respects so much.

And, of course, Mathieu is far from the first person to suggest a Wilson-New York link. Rumors of Wilson eventually joining the Giants have been discussed many times this offseason. Wilson joining New York’s other team, the Jets, won’t happen because the Jets have Sam Darnold, but the Giants will be moving on from Eli Manning sooner rather than later.

It would still take an awful lot for the Giants to pull off a trade to acquire Wilson this year, and it wouldn’t be easy next year, either, given that the Seahawks can use the franchise tag to keep him. But there sure is a lot of smoke.

Does Russell Wilson want to stay with the Seahawks?

When asked last month by Jimmy Fallon about a rumor that Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson could end up with the Giants, Wilson said, “I’m not sure if the Seahawks are gonna let me get away.”

That response glosses over the more fundamental question of whether Wilson would like for the Seahawks to let him get away.

Per a league source, the Seahawks think that Wilson would like to play elsewhere, even if he hasn’t and wouldn’t ever say it. They also believe that this unspoken dynamic will cause Wilson to drive a harder bargain with them than he would with another team.

Yes, Wilson and his agent, Mark Rodgers, continue to talk to the Seahawks about a long-term deal. And, yes, under the right financial circumstances, Wilson will sign what would be a third contract in Seattle. But if the Seahawks won’t pay whatever it is that Wilson wants from the Seahawks, the question becomes whether he’d want that same amount from a different team.

The answer to that question won’t be known unless and until the Seahawks and Wilson fail to work out a contract before Wilson’s stated deadline of April 15, and whether the Seahawks would at some point explore the possibility of trading Wilson elsewhere. That may not happen in 2019, when the Seahawks can keep Wilson for a base salary of $17 million. It becomes more likely if/when Wilson initiates the year-to-year Kirk Cousins-style approach under the franchise tag, with $30.34 million becoming the price tag for keeping him in 2020 — and when Wilson’s leverage on a long-term deal would skyrocket, given that the franchise tag would move to $36.4 million for 2021 and, given the 44-percent rule for a third tag, to $52.43 million for 2022.

If Wilson would take less than what he could get from the Seahawks on a long-term deal, it becomes easier to trade him, since his next team wouldn’t be looking at the same astronomical investment. And that becomes a very real dynamic in the question of whether the Seahawks will devote the cash and cap space necessary to keep him, or whether they’d get what they can and start over with a young quarterback who would be making dramatically less under the rookie wage scale.

It’s a consideration that remains premature while the window remains open on a long-term deal for Wilson. But if/when April 15 without a long-term deal between the Seahawks and Wilson, the question of whether would take less from a different team becomes highly relevant to whether the Seahawks could find a trade partner, if that’s the route the team chooses to take instead of paying him unprecedented franchise-tag money on a year-to-year basis.

It still strikes me as an insane thought (who trades an elite QB?), but this Wilson to NY thing seems to have a lot of legs.

Umpa lumpa should change his jersey # to 12 once he becomes a little bitty giant.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go take a #12.

I mean, that line of thinking is all well and good. Now mind you, I hate the Cheats just as much as the next Rams fan....buttttt.....i would venture to say that they built a dynasty by winning a butt load of superbowls (they didn't play division opponents in the playoffs).

th

The Patriots helped build a dynasty off of having a crap division so.... yeah no one ever needs "better competition in their divisions."

but they did have home field advantage many times because of their weak division, which was crucial for them to make it to the superbowl. that plus they're the luckiest team i've ever seen with game ending turnovers being overturned due to penalties or rule interpretations or opponents doing dumb things when they have the game won.

I just dont think its fair to put the pats success on having a weak division. You play 16 regular season games, 6 of which are division games. Might it have SOMETHING to do with it? Sure! But thats not fair. Im just saying, i give credit where it is due. I dont like it, but it IS due.
The argument could be made that the Rams have peaked on a weak NFC west. Who do we have? Seatle minus the legion of boom? Please bro. The pats beat us and had homefield against the mighty chargers, a good but not great team. Look at who the pats beat this year. Bears, vikings, packers, titans, chiefs, jags, texans, colts. How many great ds and os are on that list? Or great qbs? We beat the chargers vikings packers and chiefs.

Let me say this about QB's. Since 2006, 154 QB's have been drafted into the NFL. You know how many of them have won a Super Bowl? 3. Russel Wilson, Nick Foles, and Joe Flacco. 3 more made it and lost. Ryan, Newton, and Goff. Not one QB drafted in the first round since 2006 has won a Super Bowl.

I don't but it sure has made it easier for them that their division has been a dumpster fire for pretty much all their superbowl wins.

Flacco was drafted in the first round in 2008, but I get your point.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/26529275/sources-qb-wilson-sign-deadline

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson does not intend to sign a contract extension with the team this season if he does not reach an agreement by his self-imposed deadline of midnight Monday, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

It will be a challenge to get a new deal done by that deadline, though the sides are trying as talks continue, sources told Schefter.

Wilson's contract is up after this season. If a new contract is not agreed on, the Seahawks presumably will place their franchise tag on Wilson.

Wilson is expected to participate in all of the Seahawks' offseason activities and attend training camp.

As for suggestions that the Seahawks could trade Wilson if he does not sign a new deal, there are no obvious teams willing to surrender draft picks or pay Wilson what he is seeking, sources said.

In 2015, Wilson also set a deadline for an extension, but that wasn't until the start of training camp, and the two sides agreed on a four-year, $87.6 million deal at the last minute. After that extension, Wilson said he would have tabled contract talks and played out the final year of his rookie contract had the two sides not met the deadline.

His last deal made him the NFL's second-highest-paid quarterback, behind Aaron Rodgers' $22 million per season. Wilson has since fallen to 12th in terms of annual average salary among quarterbacks, and it is believed he wants his next contract to hold up longer than his last one.

Rodgers is back atop the quarterback pay scale after signing an extension last year that averages $33.5 million.

________________________________________________

"Sources" say that. If true though, then Wilson's just going after the money.

Of course, in Seattle he doesn't have any state income tax, while the top rate in Jersey is nearly 9%. His ego may end up costing him money, unless he earns a lot more in endorsements, or his wife earns a lot more being there.

Stuff like this makes me really wonder if he IS making a play for New York. As in, this is part of showing he’s “trying to stay in Seattle” despite his desire otherwise.

And there you go; foil hat back in closet.
