With brutal schedule ahead, 49ers' blowout loss puts season in peril

Nick WagonerESPN Staff Writer

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers are in trouble. Big trouble.

After a disappointing loss last week to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Niners needed to make a statement on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. And they did. It read something like this: Barring a major and expedient turnaround, this season is slipping away in a hurry.

The banged-up 49ers were flat from the beginning in an embarrassing 43-17 blowout loss to the Dolphins. It was a performance the likes of which hadn't been seen in these parts in at least a couple of seasons. Miami receivers ran free for huge plays, the Niners' offensive line offered little time to throw, the once-vaunted San Francisco pass rush was mostly nonexistent and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was benched.

Yes, the 49ers are dealing with more than their share of injuries. They started Sunday's game without all three of their top cornerbacks, leaving practice squad player Brian Allen to start and endure a brutal performance. But this was supposed to be the 49ers' get-right game in which their key offensive performers were all together for the first time and would lead them to a win before entering a brutal stretch of schedule.

Instead, it was the Niners' second consecutive loss, dropping them to 2-3 and into sole possession of last place in the NFC West division.

Now, they enter what is arguably the most difficult stretch of schedule any team will play this season. Over the next seven games, the 49ers will host the Los Angeles Rams, travel to play the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, return home against the Green Bay Packers, go to the New Orleans Saints and Rams and host the Buffalo Bills.

The Niners believe they have built something special and sustainable in the past few years. If that's true, they'll have ample opportunity to prove it in the coming weeks.

QB Breakdown: Garoppolo's return from a high right ankle sprain lasted one half and, like the rest of the game, it wasn't pretty. Garoppolo never looked comfortable as he was under siege for much of his time on the field and finished 7-of-17 for 77 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions for a passer rating of 15.7.

Backup C.J. Beathard had a little more success, going 9-of-18 for 94 yards with a touchdown, but the game was out of hand by the time he stepped on the field.

Describe the game in two words: Never close. The Niners looked lifeless from the outset and never really threatened the Dolphins, something that would have been difficult to imagine in August.

Troubling trend: The Niners' offensive line and pass protection was once again abysmal. Miami had pass-rushers and blitzers running free at Garoppolo and Beathard for most of the game. And although the run blocking was better, it didn't matter because the 49ers fell so far behind that they mostly abandoned the run altogether. Miami finished with five total sacks and eight quarterback hits.

NFL Power Rankings Week 6

1. Seattle Seahawks (5-0)
Week 5 ranking: 2
gn-arrow.png

Biggest weakness:
The defense

The Seahawks are 5-0 despite a historically leaky defense. They allowed a combined 1,292 passing yards over their first three games, easily the most to begin a season in NFL history. They had been fine against the run until Sunday night versus Minnesota when they were gashed for 201 yards on the ground. The 2,356 yards Seattle has given up are the most by any team through five games since the 1950 Colts, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. The Seahawks' saving grace has been forcing turnovers -- they're tied for second in the NFL with 10 -- and getting stops in critical moments, like the stuff on fourth-and-1 against the Vikings on Sunday. -- Brady Henderson

7. Los Angeles Rams (4-1)
Week 5 ranking: 8
gn-arrow.png

Biggest weakness:
Kicking

The Rams are hitting their stride on offense and defense, but kicking remains a concern because of inexperience. The Rams selected Samuel Sloman with a seventh-round pick from Miami (Ohio) and stuck with him through a three-kicker competition during training camp. Sloman has connected on 75% of his field goal attempts (6-of-8), which ranks 28th in the NFL. However, it's fair to question why Sean McVay had the rookie attempt a 53-yard kick in windy conditions in Week 3 at Buffalo (all of Sloman's other attempts are from inside the 40-yard line). Sloman is 14-of-16 on extra point attempts (87.5%), which also ranks 28th in the league. -- Lindsey Thiry

16. Arizona Cardinals (3-2)
Week 5 ranking: 16
sw_ye_40.png

Biggest weakness:
Interceptions

The Cardinals have just one interception this season, and it came in Week 4, tying them for 29th in the NFL. Only the Texans have fewer. Even though Arizona is tied for seventh in the league with 14 sacks, the Cardinals are hardly getting pressure on quarterbacks. They're ranked 31st in pressure percentage with a rate of 19.5. Very little pressure puts very little stress on quarterbacks, and stress tends to lead to bad throws and more interceptions. If the Cardinals can get more pressure up front, that will likely translate into more picks. -- Josh Weinfuss

17. San Francisco 49ers (2-3)
Week 5 ranking: 13
rd-arrow.png

Biggest weakness:
Offensive line

The 49ers have questions all over right now, but many of them are related to injuries. The offensive line dealt with some injuries in camp, which undoubtedly hurt early-season cohesion, but the group is still mostly what the team envisioned in the offseason. Yet the 49ers have yielded 18 sacks, fourth most in the NFL, and rank 22nd in run block win rate. If the Niners can't regain control of the line of scrimmage consistently, it's going to be difficult for an offense with plenty of playmakers to get back on track. -- Nick Wagoner

Their defense is in shambles losing their top players to injury and trading away Buckner. Garapolo has never been anywhere near an elite QB IMO. He's always had issues with his accuracy which is why I seriously doubted that he would have had success in NE under Belicheat. It's why they were more than willing to trade him. I think there is a strong possibility that the Niners take a QB in the draft. That would give them the option of using Jimmy as a bridge QB for a year, or as trade bait.

High ankle sprains can linger for months if they are severe enough. They should consider trading for Tyrod Taylor. But bottom line is that their season is done because of all the losses on the defense. Just look at their schedule and they probably lose the next 5 games putting them at 2-7 when it happens.

Barring more injuries I’d say the Rams have a good chance at defeating all three division opponents. It’s not that the Rams are without weaknesses. It’s just that the three other teams appear to have bigger weaknesses.

Imo ranking the Seahawks No. 1 is an absurdity. Wilson is great and has outstanding receivers, but the defense sucks. This is not a power team. It is a team with a HOF qb winning games by the skin of his teeth.

I know I am biased but it sure seems to me that the NFC WEST is the Best Division in the NFL!!!

In all Honesty I really wish that wasn’t the case!!!

A little competition is FINE but the NFC West is unreal!!!

Yeah I really don't think there's any arguing it.

Well, I guess a case can be made for the NFC East :clown
