Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil : is the retelling of an ancient fable The Smith and the Devil.

8.7 / 10

neither the wife or I had a certain type (horror, drama, comedy) movie in mind when we decided to watch this gem of a foreign film. the trailer was just enough to peak our interest. i'm glad it did. turns out to be a rather enjoyable, low budget film that entertains by just being what it is (an ancient fable) instead of trying to be an over the top, CGI filled (those are fun at the right times) movie that relies on tricks to be fun to watch.

this one is fun to watch on its own merits. the 3 main characters, the smith, the devil and a young girl all give good performances, especially the young girl whose only movie credit is this film. their best scene in the movie is what i will now remember as the chickpea scene, is a rather funny scene and an idea i'd have never thought of for how it was used.

the only issue i had with the movie was the fact that being a foreign film obviously it was sub-titled (which i watch movies that way since my hearing is rather horrible anyway---- some people say its distracting) but the problem was that it was also over dubbed as well, AND the overdub did not match the subtitles, which sadly enough was distracting to a point and rather unnecessary. personally, i'd rather hear a movie in its intended language, i believe Girl with the Dragon Tattoo falls into this category and i found myself enjoying the scandanavian version a little more than its amercian counterpart.

the movie is 98 minutes long and perfectly timed. its also only on netflix that i know of and was just released on October 12. if you can see it, do so.

I saw an advanced screening last night. There was some good to it. The score is amazing. The mask is great. There really is no atmosphere or suspense, and while I enjoy nods to other movies, some of it is VERY forced. They show Michael WAY To much. The kills are heavy, which I loved. I need to see it again to really rate it. I don’t want to believe it was disappointing because I love halloween.

West of Broadway (1931)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0023681/fullcredits/
Jerry Seevers returns from World War I service broken in health and his doctor tells him he has only six months to live. His fiancée jilts him and he sets out to drink himself to death. In one of his binges he wakes up to find himself married to what the assumes is a gold-digger after his money. He leaves her and goes to a ranch in Arizona and get rid of his new bride, who is really in love with him. He sets up divorce proceedings and then realizes he actually loves her.

I found the title and plot after I wrote my own review:

This movie from 1931 about an alcoholic former WW1 hero millionaire who proposed and married this really cute girl on a whim in midst of a bender after his friend approached him at a date night banquet hall announcing his upcoming marriage. The woman does not appear to take his proposal serious due to his intoxication but turns out they do indeed wed - that night. The groom really has no redeeming qualities and not quite sure what the bride ever saw in him.

As they leave dinner the millionaire pays the band to play the wedding March as they depart an route to a pastor who is conflicted about what he had just done cause it appears the man had been drinking. The pastor's wife just shakes her head and takes the cash from the pastor's hand.

The next day regret kicks in, he throws a few hundo towards his new bride and gives her his lawyer's card and informs her that he's filing for divorce. The groom arranges to sneak off to his ranch in Arizona with his Swede butler and Chinaman house servant. His new unwanted bride follows him, refusing to accept divorce she tortures him by constantly being in the way and asserting herself as woman of the house, forcing the wealthy groom to crave the bottle. While at his ranch he is visited by colleagues who address his poor lifestyle decisions. His hatred towards his new bride only increases. The bride is miserable as well but refuses to accept their annulment.

Eventually the bride accepts defeat and books a train to Chicago. The groom follows her there, punches her date in the face, professed his love for her and decides to call off the divorce and they live happily ever after.

I give the movie a 6\10 because there were some really cute post war chicks with adorable personality traits. Turner Classic is always on my TV for moments like this. I'm anti special effects. Classic movies are a history lesson as well as a story as they generally portray what life was like during that period.

Halloween

8/10

although it is kind of a hard movie to rate

one of my most anticipated films of the year

so there was little chance that it would live up to my expectations , and I will admit , I was a little underwhelmed

but...............

I'm not actually sure thats a bad thing

with all the prior Halloween films , most of which really started to get carried away with Michael Myers being this unstoppable supernatural force who keeps rising from the dead

where this film definitely takes a few , quite a few steps backwards on Michael Myers

now he's back to the original idea , he's just a guy ,

I felt this film really brought it back into to a more reality based world , well , somewhat anyways

there is still stupid people , doing stupid things , at the stupidest times , but I'm not sure you could really make these kinds of movies without them................lol

but I also felt that the filmmakers did it on purpose , to pay homage to all those other slasher films of the 80's , I think it's kind of a rule , and just had fun with it

this film has a ton of stuff that pays homage to the original film

we went an saw it last night , and now that I've had to think about it , I like it even more now then I did last night leaving the theatre , the only part I didn't like was the Doctor guy , really served no purpose , and they could have cut him and his motive out of the film , and I think it would have been a even better film

but over all , I really liked it , and looking forward to watching it again

Want the first movie the one where he was stacked in the neck with a coat hanger, shot several times, and feel out a second story window but didn't die or get hurt significantly from these events? I also believe I remember him lowering himself down from some kind of overhead pole or rafter with one arm, like he did some kind of one handed muscle up and was just hanging out (possibly upside down because the girl didn't even notice him up there, so no legs hanging down).

Didn't seem like just a guy to me but then again, I thought the point was he was some kind of super freak and not just a guy. I also want around for the original movies, but my mother made me watch the first 2.

.

just watched For Love Of The Game again today. what a great movie, never get tired of watching it. it's baseball mixed with romance. i found out that sam raimi directed it. for real? evil dead to this. if you haven't watched it grab your wife/girlfriend or even by yourself, sit back and watch the most enjoyable 2 hours of cinema you're likely to see.

the highlight scene for me was towards the end of the game after he throws a runner out and is walking back to the dugout. he looks up in the stands and sees/remembers old footage of his parents cheering him on, mixed with the musical score, it really pulls the heart strings.

.
I cant belive I havent seen it.
I'll keep it in mind for sure

A Star is Born - 10/10.

This is the 4th remake, (I saw the one in '74 with Kristofferson and Streisand - meh), so I was not expecting a lot.

Never been a huge Bradley Cooper fan, (didn't like or dislike him), and wouldn't know Lady Gaga if I saw her on the street, (with or without makeup), but they absolutely NAILED it in this movie, especially given it is Cooper's first time as Director, and Gaga's first as an Actress.

And now I am huge fans of both.

Added bonus - the music is fucking killer.

I was expecting more of a comedy than a normal Avenger movie and it didn't disappoint. Michael Pena is funny every time he's on screen. Satisfactory action and super heroes doing super hero stuff. The two hours went by quickly. I docked one point for the after, after credit scene because it was pointless even if it was kinda funny. Also, Michelle Pfeifer still looks pretty good. And of course this is always nice to look at...

Evangeline Lily is so beautiful. But, her body just ruins it. No curves. Just straight, no ass. I looked her up naked. Big disappointment.

Alpha

7/10

tough movie to grade

Alpha is kinda build as a movie about mans first best friend , the beginning of dogs coming from that first wolf , 20,000 years ago

so it's basically a boy and his dog , there have been lots of movies about a boy and his dog , and I'm a sucker for every one of them

The wife and I totally enjoyed this film , I would have gave it a higher grade , but there are parts that make you question some of it , like when the wolf got better , why it didn't just take off , and the boy was able to survive some pretty harsh conditions , but we'll just leave it at that......................lol

it did have theatrical release , but it really plays more like a by the numbers lifetime channel movie

but if anyone loves a boy and his dog movies like I do , it's definitely worth checking out

oh , and it is all done in subtitles , as they all speak cavemanish , although there really isn't alot of dialog , so it's easy to follow along

I believe the Alpha in the title refers to the first dog

Our darkest hour

If you're a history buff 10/10
If not you'll probably give it much lower.

I loved it! Gave a good look into Churchill and the time. You see that he was a flawed but great man and what it took in that political climate to lead the Brittish empire out of WW2.

I have a casual acquaintance that could have done work as her body double up until she got breast implants. Even her face is the same, almost a twin.

Of course I’ve seen it before - many times. But I just saw it again and it still has it all. If you haven’t seen it, don’t die without first directing your feetsa to this all time classic.
