Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil : is the retelling of an ancient fable The Smith and the Devil.
8.7 / 10
neither the wife or I had a certain type (horror, drama, comedy) movie in mind when we decided to watch this gem of a foreign film. the trailer was just enough to peak our interest. i'm glad it did. turns out to be a rather enjoyable, low budget film that entertains by just being what it is (an ancient fable) instead of trying to be an over the top, CGI filled (those are fun at the right times) movie that relies on tricks to be fun to watch.
this one is fun to watch on its own merits. the 3 main characters, the smith, the devil and a young girl all give good performances, especially the young girl whose only movie credit is this film. their best scene in the movie is what i will now remember as the chickpea scene, is a rather funny scene and an idea i'd have never thought of for how it was used.
the only issue i had with the movie was the fact that being a foreign film obviously it was sub-titled (which i watch movies that way since my hearing is rather horrible anyway---- some people say its distracting) but the problem was that it was also over dubbed as well, AND the overdub did not match the subtitles, which sadly enough was distracting to a point and rather unnecessary. personally, i'd rather hear a movie in its intended language, i believe Girl with the Dragon Tattoo falls into this category and i found myself enjoying the scandanavian version a little more than its amercian counterpart.
the movie is 98 minutes long and perfectly timed. its also only on netflix that i know of and was just released on October 12. if you can see it, do so.
