What do you think was the reason he needed to take a year away and get some mental health treatment etc?

It's incredibly easy for some people to find out they have an alcohol issue.
If* that was the case, and he has it behind him and is doing everything possible to win McVays trust, then I'll wait and see what coach and Les decide...

But I'm purely speculating on a pretty atypical situation
Having a drinking problem is one thing.
Playing QB every game (like you speculate) while not being 100% sober in a long time — that’s something totally different and unacceptable for a team leader and your most important guy.

Now that I have read all these posts about the game my final take after watching the game is: Backup OL looks solid; backup RBs are solid; WR depth should be improved with Whittington; TE trying to make the roster had a moment; and Bennett is a gamer, he will learn from his mistakes and was money when it was crunch time. As for the defense, the line was solid and Davis and Jackson had some nice moments; ILBers were solid, while the OLBers did a good job containing the edges; DBs seemed to be sticky with improved tackling skills. However, the biggest improvement may be Karty the new kicker.

3 - Logan Bruss, RG: 81.5

Nice surprise there. I can't recall seeing Bruss getting blown up at all yesterday, as he was in past preseason games.
They gave Nick Hampton a massive grade which puzzles me because he was solid but didn’t get much to show for his work. Even so that is good news. I wonder if we see some of these players again preseason as quite a few should have cemented their place on last nights form. For example:

Davis
jW
Hampton
B Limmer

Anyone else?

Yeah the entire OL played well. Gotta give cred to the OL coaching there as well as the players. And they looked solid or better the entire game.

I thought Limmer in particular was excellent. Hope he is ok.

2 - Omar Speights, MLB: 85.5

Liked him coming out of LSU and it could be an area of need, although Hummel also shined. Overall, great debut for the LSU/Oregon State ILB.
He was part of the overall excellent tackling we saw throughout the game. Across the middle. In the flats. Very impressive.

Hummel the impressive thing is his range. But I did notice Speights. Also those guys are undoubtedly valuable teams types too.

This is good news indeed. MLB / ILB seemed a weak spot.
I seem to recall Speights' name during pre-draft mocks, did someone here mock him to us?

Let’s pump the breaks on the 4 INTs he sucks talk.

The guy is basically a 4th rd rookie who’s had a year off from football.

Brady threw 4 picks in a game on six occasions. How about giving the guy some time to accumulate.

Just re-watched some of yesterdays game...

Wanna give KUDO's to Jason Taylor for putting the brakes on the kick return at the end of the game... That could have un-done a whole lot of effort, right there.... :wow2:

I can't remember what show I was watching yesterday after the game ended, but someone mentioned Payton Manning had 28 interceptions his rookie year as a starter. He came out okay though, right? I think Stetson is a big concern, but do feel we need to give him more breathing room and time to see if he can develop into a pro.

You and I and a few others were very happy with his addition! Looks like a good start for sure.
