Rams trade for Sony Michel

I watched his performance in the most recent preseason game. Looked much more comfortable running zone concepts. Does a good job of getting N-S when he finds a seam. Runs hard behind his pads. Good burst. Can run through tackles and pushes the pile. Not that elusive and not a lot of lateral agility beyond the LOS (but he does have a nice jump cut). Good awareness in the passing game. Doesn't have the softest hands.

Does this trade remind anybody of the one the Rams made for Faulk? Look how that turned out! I'm pumped and can't wait for the season to start.

Love your excitement for the trade but Faulk was considered one of the best at the position and the Colts went younger. Little did they know Superman had a ring in the tank.

Not really considering how deep the 2022 draft class is suppose to be, and the fact a fifth round pick in 2022 has the same value that a fourth round pick in 2023 has.

I thought you couldn't trade comp picks.

It seems trading comp picks is OK but trading Conditional comp picks is not OK.

Now appears the trade is a a 2022 #6 and a 2023 #4.

I'm good with this pickup. I was thinking I'd be satisfied with an aging vet because we need experience more than anything. He's got enough experience in pass protection and he's still got enough in the tank to be a good runner. His running style kinda reminds me of CJ Anderson a few years ago. Doesn't mess around trying make something when nothing is there. Powers his way to get what he can. He's not an explosive runner but he can get the tough yards. Sounds like a good change of pace with him and Henderson.

Pros: Decent back, above average vision, good initial acceleration, fights for tough yards, zone scheme ( 1 cut and push) a good fit for him, more experienced in pass protection, durable!

Cons: not real fast, his mid gear, is his top gear and not real fast one, he is at full speed shortly after handoff, and no matter how much daylight ahead of him, he's not going any faster.

I just think of it this way. Is Sony worth a 4th round pick? Damn right he is. Would you be okay with a 4th round pick on a RB who can clearly be a #2 RB who is also capable of carrying the load if needed? I have no problem with it because Michel is a proven commodity not some unknown. This guy is good. I don't see him playing the last game. He isn't #4.

The Rams traded for a guy capable of playing as a #2 RB. I see him as a rotational #2 with Funk this year. Sony also solved their question as to who will be the short-yardage RB. Is that worth a 4th round pick? Ahhh yeah it is. This is not a short term rental. Funk was beginning to edge Jones, so if anyone is going to play next weekend it will be Anderson with Jones standing by. I think Jones just got bumped in the roster order.

Henderson, Michel/Funk, Jones looks like a good RB room to go into the season with. I heard the Pats were shopping Sony on Monday but didn't really think the Rams would pull the trigger. But I should have had more faith in Snead. This is getting a quality RB cheap.

Wow! Thread winner. I'm so grateful. I just want to thank all the smart decisions by the front office that made this possible. And of course, rambitious1 for unequaled recognition of talent and Kay for looking like a whore expecting a customer during her home covid sessions. People have been saying we mortgaged the future since 2018. 4 straight winning seasons and multiple playoff appearances. Not to mention we still look like a legit contender for the foreseeable future. If that is irresponsible moves sign me up for more.

Basically, Michel is the same speed as Jones, but he's got better power. Sony's running style is aggressive and he will break arm tackles. As far as speed is concerned both guys have been timed in the 4.5 range which is fairly average for a RB. Yes, Michel is your classic one cut and go type of downhill runner, perfect for an inside run attack.

People probably wonder why I advocate for the Rams to use one of their LBs as a lead blocker. Well it's because the Pats do it all the time. LBs are used to an aggressive blocking style while TEs block by impeding the tackler. If the Rams want to reduce their RB injuries I suggest they start using a lead blocker on their inside runs.
