Sony has average speed for the position (4.54), i.e. making him faster than Jones, :eyeroll: but he gives them that between the tackles short yardage guy they have needed since Malcolm Brown. He's not a breakaway threat per se but he's looked tough as a guy who can get you those short to medium yards.

I like the acquisition actually. He's the type of #3 workhorse type of RB that is useful. I'm not so quick to discount his longevity here. This could be a win for both the Rams and Michel. He fell out of favor in NE because he's not the franchise RB they thought they drafted. Here in LA he isn't expected to be anything but a role player which is exactly what he is.

The initial cost is high but workable. The Pats will get a 5th and 6th rounder for Sony and that converts to a 4th rounder if the Rams receive a comp pick for him. That's why I think the Rams will offer Sony a reasonable but short (2yr) deal. Sony is a good RB capable of giving the Rams move the chains yardage and tough between the tackles running.

This signing has changed the Ram draft dynamic. Instead of drafting a RB, Sony is that "drafted" RB. he will make a solid contribution as a role player. This will give the Rams an opportunity to use 2022 to see how Akers is upon his return. If Akers has lost speed and explosiveness as I think is possible the Rams can draft a RB in 2023. Meanwhile, the Rams are solid in their RB room with the addition of Michel. He could be moved into that #2 or #3 role right now as he and Henderson are the only two proven vets. More likely I see Sony in a more situational role as the #3 RB. In that role he has a place on this roster over the long term in the middle of the rotation if he chooses to play it. What I'm saying is that the Rams now have a Malcolm Brown type of RB with better speed than Brown. He's not going to be that featured RB but capable of a situational rotation in the same way Brown was used for years.

Welcome to the Rams, as the new Malcolm Brown, Sony Michel (he's actually a better RB from scrimmage than Brown was). Oh BTW his injury last year was for a quad. He's had minor knee injuries but he hasn't missed much time due to them.

I don't think Snead is done working on the RB room just yet though........

These were some interesting words contained in the press releases below:

"Interestingly enough, though Michel ran behind more gap and pull schemes in 2020, he was more effective when running zone. That fits in with at least the 2020 version of the Rams, who, per Sports Info Solutions, had the second-most zone rushing attempts in the NFL last season".......

"he’s on the books for the Rams in 2021 with a cap charge of $3 million This makes Michel the cap-heaviest back on a Rams roster that wants to define the position inexpensively."

Watching Funk miss that delayed blitz the other night screamed out to me something needed done. And Snead responds! Definitely feel better about things. The kids can run, but that's only part of the job.....

I think McVay has seen enough of Funk to want to really see him in games. I think Funk will rotate with Sony behind Henderson. Funk has breakaway speed, Jones doesn't, and Michel doesn't either but he's faster than Jones and more experienced. The reason I think they need a good look at Funk is to determine his durability and it will shape their options in regards to Akers when he returns next year.

The problem with a RB Achilles injury is the majority experience a loss of speed and explosiveness upon return. Most RB's even after return don't play much beyond 3 years post-injury. So the Rams need to know if they need to be thinking of drafting a RB in 2023. I see Funk as the Ram's way of extending Henderson's durability. Funk has even more speed than Henderson and has shown he can break arm tackles. This means the offense doesn't change between Henderson, Funk and Michel. It does change somewhat with Jones. Jone's perimeter game will be swing passes.

The main reason I see Henderson and Funk as 1 & 2 is they present the same level of threat to a defense. Michel and Jones simply don't offer that same level of threat. Jones and Sony will need to work to overcome that perception. Needless to say I like the Michel acquistion a lot.

My guess is RB 1A/ 1B with each getting 12-15 touches a game.
Yeah that is probably the Rams' plan. But you know how it goes lol. Someone gets dinged up, shit gets skewed, and that committee thing happens.

What is nice now is out of Hendy/Michel/Jones/Funk someone should be able to step up. The depth is there which is really the key here. Funk as a 4th stringer is some great depth because that boy can ball a bit.

I'm excited man. Jesus these last couple weeks are killin me.

Love it. He's a good back and a different back from what the Rams currently have. Just a real solid move.
The Rams will only have 10 draft picks next year now, darn.
Great job by Snead.
Very good chance he's RB1 on this team because he is a little more all-around than Henderson, imo. Definitely more inside power.

Check this off the "worries" list going into the season.

Yeah, one thing both the Gruden and Belichick schools are consistent about is not trusting rookies to just step in.

That Michel played and played well for Coach B in is rookie season as the main back says a LOT about the trust for the other facets of the game, specifically protecting Brady on blitz pickup.

The more I look into this the better it looks for us.

Pats fans were saying that of all the backs, Michel looked the best in camp, but that wasn't gonna be enough to change Coach Bs mind... especially with the rook from OU shredding in preseason.

But we've got a Georgia RB entering his contract year both healthy and with a chip on his shoulder.

Also... don't be surprised if Michel does well if we don't extend him presuming the contract is reasonable. You'll notice the Browns aren't dealing Hunt when they have Chubb... I don't think Akers/Michel are in that tier, but the tier just below it? Yeah... and I like our passing game an order of magnitude better than Cleveland's (although, I do envy their OL).

The Rams FO have been remarkably consistent in preferring to use picks to get established players instead of drafting them and really focusing their draft and udfa picks on fits, both scheme and outlook and have been pretty successful, thus far.

I think the first time we run zone right and Michel picks up a nifty 12 yards, a lot more will feel better about this.

That was as much Evans as anyone. And, it happened twice. Who knows what the line call was but, Rvans should have been passing the guy in front of him who was sliding away from the blitz.

This move does not surprise me at all. When Akers went down I just felt the Rams had no other option but to bring in a veteran running back. Frankly had the Rams not brought someone in, they would’ve been derelict in their duties.
Just my humble opinion
